YOUTH ACTIVITIES REPORT

On Monday 15th May our group of 11 young people abseiled down Miller's Dale viaduct. Although the weather was aw-ful the group were in high spirits. I think the maths teacher would have been impressed when two of the group abseiled singing mathematical equations. The group are building confi-dence and applying team work. One of them was a little un-sure about participating, but she was persuaded by her friends in a very positive, discreet way. So she did participate, to the great delight and cheers of her group, and then ran back asking for another go! Next activities are weaselling on 19/6 and canoeing/raft building on 10/7. Well done everyone.

HOPE VALLEY RAIL USERS GROUP The annual meeting was held at Hathersage Memorial Hall venue on 17th June. Vicky Cropper the Northern ‘Community and Sustainability Manager’ outlined general plans for the franchisee’s future, although detail for the Hope Valley line was sketchy. She was receptive to issues raised by the audi-ence concerning such items as disabled access, through tick-eting issue problems, quality of station buildings(shelters) ,etc. The good news is that the HVRUG objectives for a 7 day hourly stopping service are likely to be more closely achieved in the May 2018 timetable, albeit with a random station stop-ping pattern due to line capacity restrictions. ‘For consultation’ details of this timetable show extra weekday services for Hope, with 3 eastbound and 4 west, plus a later weekday 11.26pm service from Sheffield! There will be a gradual intro-duction of refurbished trains, with the end of the ‘Pacer’ class in two years time. Representatives of ‘Friends of Station Groups’ outlined their local progress. Hope is the only inter-mediate station on the route without a ‘Friends of station group’. An opportunity for someone with vision, time and pa-tience to get things going surely?

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Council Finances: The council’s 2016/17 accounts have been produced and approved by the internal auditor. Grant Thornton has again been appointed by the Audit Commission to carry out a review of these accounts and the forms required for this process have been completed. Council has approved the overall Governance and the Accounting Statements and all forms have been sent to Grant Thornton for review. It is expected that this will be completed by the end of September. Quarry: The purchaser’s solicitor has asked Council to pro-vide additional information about the quarry and to register the quarry with Land Registry (a process which could take many months). Council has responded to this request. Car Parking Committee: Take-up of the parking bays on Soft Water Lane continues to increase and most are now taken. This committee has met with a DCC Highways officer to re-view the feasibility of upgrading a number of locations around the village to provide additional parking. In some cases the suggestions are to ‘harden’ selected verges by levelling them and then installing suitable surfacing. The DCC response to these suggestions is now awaited. In addition, this committee is continuing to work with other bodies to investigate addi-tional possible parking opportunities. Community Resilience committee: Additional supplies of materials (sand-bags, floodsacks, traffic cones) have been installed in the new secure storage facility near Town Bottom ready for use in an emergency situation. It should be remem-bered that a) this committee will endeavour to alleviate prob-lems until help arrives from the principal authorities (e.g. DCC, DDDC, Environment Agency) and b) householders still must take responsibility for securing their own properties. Carnival 2017 committee: Planning of Council’s part in Car-nival (the parade and the fair on Beggars Plot) is proceeding well. If you would like to become involved in the planning and running of carnival (new members, ideas and suggestions would be very welcome), then please contact the Parish Clerk for details. The annual removal of rubbish and weed from the Brook is planned to take place on 8th & 9th July in advance of Carnival. This not only improves the area visually, but it also allows Bradda Dads to run their world famous Duck Race. Playing Fields and Open Spaces committee: A number of different projects are being considered around the village. Some work has already started in the Rose Garden. Quota-tions are being sought for work at the Peace Garden (to widen the entrance, improve the entrance surfacing & install a new gate) and to improve the basketball court at Town Bottom. The zip wire at Town Bottom field has now been refurbished. Toilet Block at Town Bottom: Following the recent meeting with a DDDC official to explore options for the Bradwell toilet block, Council is awaiting answers to questions we asked. WEASELLING Is this the latest sport of seeing how many youngsters you can get on top of a rock without using glue! Well, not really. This is actually our band of intrepid young peo-ple who have been down into Bagshaw Cavern and abseiled off a bridge. Now they have tried their hand at Weaselling, which involves clambering through and over rocks on the moors. Much fun was had by all.

REBELLION KNOLL WI This month we’ll be meeting for Strawberries and Pimms – so we’re hoping for good weather! Last month we heard from Charlotte Nutting who talked about Dementia Friends. Charlotte is a Learning Disability Nurse and Social Worker who lives in Bradwell and teaches at Shef-field Hallam University. She became involved in Dementia Friends after her Grandmother died of symptoms associated with dementia. Charlotte was keen to impress upon us that dementia is not a natural part of the ageing process and, like any other disease of the brain, it can happen at any time, al-though it is more common in older people. Alzheimer's Dis-ease (which many people believe IS dementia) is actually just one of the 100 or so different types of dementia. By giving these Dementia Friends talks Charlotte is hoping to challenge society’s commonly held views on dementia. Dementia isn’t just about losing your memory (another commonly held mis-conception) – it depends on which part of the brain is being affected by the disease and can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks. Charlotte was keen to stress that it is possible to live well with dementia and that there is more to the person than the dementia. For more about Dementia Friends you can visit: www.dementiafriends.org.uk The tubs on the main road have now been cleared and re-planted with their summer attire, we hope you all enjoyed the spring show!

HOME ON LEAVE The servicemen to visit Bradwell in the next group to be de-scribed were: 8694 Private George William Sidebottom (1st Battalion Loyal

North Lancashire Regiment). George’s biography proved difficult to trace because he was born George William Side-botham in Bradwell in 1887, but by 1891 the Sidebothams had moved to Saddleworth and the family name had been changed to Sidebottom. By 1911 father Charles Ellis (born in Brough) and mother Emma (née Bradwell, born Great Hucklow) had returned to Bradwell and were living on the Hills. By that time George was stationed in Hampshire hav-ing enlisted in the Lancashire regiment in Preston in 1906. Being a retained soldier he was over in France by 12th Au-gust 1914.

2nd Lieutenant Thomas Chamberlain Levesley (North Staf-fordshire Regiment, later with the Lancashire Fusiliers). Thomas was born in Ringwood Gloucestershire in 1891. His father was Sheffield-born Leonard and his mother An-nie (born in Berkeley) were both living on The Hills when their son came to visit early in 1918. Thomas was living in Blackpool when he died in December 1963.

M/282956 Herbert Marrison (Army Service Corps). Bert was born in Castleton in 1884 the son of Joseph and Hannah Marrison. In 1901Joseph was shown as living in Burrows Fold in Castleton, when his occupation was given as rope maker. By the 1911 census Bert was shown as helping his father. Bert enlisted in Buxton in December 1915. He left the army in 1918 with a 30% disability benefit. He was stated to be suffering from myalgia brought on by exposure to what appears to have been a poison gas.

SPORTS CLUB Bradwell Sports Club have discussed in detail the original format of the Gala Programme over the last few months. It has been decided that its not financially viable, plus the hours of work needed to put it together to continue in its original format. Therefore for 2017 the programme will be-come a small A5 booklet of 'WHAT'S ON'. Each booklet will be numbered and entered into a raffle at the end of Wakes Week. All events will be included in the diary of events, how-ever village organisations will have been given the option of placing a small article about their individual event for a small charge. Thank you in advance for your continued support. Frank Cooper our groundsman is retiring in August. Frank has been mowing and maintaining the main football pitch and surrounding sports areas for the last 3 + years. He has done an excellent job in keeping the football pitch in tip top condition for our senior and junior teams. We are looking for a volunteer/volunteers who would be able to take on this role. If you have a few hours a week to spare and would be interested in taking on this position please contact [email protected]

BRADDA DADS Our new event, the ‘Fun Day’ on the Town Bottom playing fields, was a great success and extremely well attended mainly due to the souring temperatures and unbroken sun-shine. Thanks go to Lynne at the Shoulder of Mutton for the electricity, Direct Charcoal for the donation of Charcoal for the barbecue and Bradwell Ice Cream for their generous donation that was gratefully eaten. We would also like to thank the Parish Council for letting us use the playing fields and their marquee. DUCK RACE: This year’s race is, as always, on the Monday of Wakes week (7th Aug) before the children's street fair. Ducks begin racing at 7 pm. Tickets are for sale in the Bake-house, Post Office, from any member of the Dads, or outside the Co-op for three Saturdays before the race.
