PC NOTES Bradwell Dale Quarry: The sale of Council’s quarry in Brad-well Dale will proceed by sealed bid with a closing date of Friday 3rd February 2017. If you are interested please contact the Parish Clerk who will be happy to provide details. Emergency Store: Council is planning to install a small se-cure storage facility near Town Bottom to store equipment for use in emergency situations (flooding, snow, traffic incidents) that might arise in the village. This equipment is intended for use in handling problems until the arrival of the responsible authorities (e.g. County Council, Fire & Rescue, Environment Agency). The majority of the cost of this store is covered by a grant from the Environment agency and the cost of the sup-plies will be covered by a £250 grant from DDDC Cllr Furness’ Local Projects Fund. Please note that it is residents’ responsi-bility to protect their own property. The parish council will help where possible but takes no responsibility for damage which might occur. Car Park on Soft Water Lane: Completion date is set for the end of March 2017, but will be completed sooner if possible. The end of March date allows some slippage in the event of adverse weather. If you are interested in renting one of these spaces, please contact the Parish Clerk for details. Playing Fields: Routine tidying and maintenance of the play-ing fields and equipment continues as usual. There are prob-lems at present with the zip wire and this has been taken out of operation pending replacement of damaged parts and over-haul of the equipment. This is scheduled for completion early in the New Year. Planning Applications: The council is consulted by PDNPA on all Bradwell planning applications. Council decides its re-sponse to applications at council meetings, so if you have submitted a planning application to PDNPA and wish to ad-dress council prior to it reaching its decision, you would be very welcome to attend the relevant meeting. Public Participation: One member of the public attended the last parish council meeting to seek its support for a community arts project across the Hope Valley. It you are interested in attending a council meeting, either as an observer or to raise concerns directly with Councillors, then you would be most welcome. The meetings are generally held at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of most months in the Methodist Lounge on Towngate. See the parish notice boards (on the side of the Memorial Hall and in the Peace Gardens bus shelter) for meeting announcements and agendas. S137 Grants: We are now over half way through the current financial year and Council would be pleased to consider appli-cations from village groups / organisations for financial assis-tance. If your group would like to apply for some of the coun-cil’s remaining S137 Grant money, please contact the Parish Clerk for information on how to apply. Street Lights: Now that the clocks have moved forward it is even more important that all the street lights are working cor-

BRADDA DADS XMAS LUNCH

The “Dads” have done it again, with another splendid Pen-sioner’s Lunch. This year they served Festive Pie (instead of cottage pie) and there were chocolates for everyone. There were also new decorations, Christmas lights and brilliant sing-ing by both schools yet again, with Dot’s accompaniment on the piano. Other points of note were a collapsed table at the end, a great comments book and brilliant Christmas card en-tries from the schools. The Dads managed to get a Lottery Award this year, which allowed them to spend a bit more and the event was truly a celebration of a great village community bringing different generations together. Above all, every Bradda Dad enjoyed every minute of organising and executing it, as they always do, but it important not to forget the Bradda Mums, who slaved over hot stoves for the event and without whom, it has to be admitted, most of the Dads events would be so much less entertaining.

BRADWELL CENTENARY PLAYERS We all got into the Panto spirit early this year, on Carnival Day. Come along and enjoy the real thing at Bradwell Centenary Players' production of Dick Whittington from 15-18 February. Tickets on sale from mid Jan. at Bradwell Village Shop or from Ken & Julie MacKenzie tel 620744. Also follow 'Bradwell Pantomine' on Facebook.

HOME ON LEAVE The servicemen to visit Bradwell in next group to be described included: Private Percy Ashmore, Bandsman Marshall Elliott, Private Samuel Middleton and Driver George Bland. 242452 Private Percy Ashmore 10th/11th Battalion, Highland

Light Infantry. In the 1911 census Percy and Marshall Elliott were both shown as living with Marshall’s father John who was also Percy’s uncle. Percy’s sister Mary Hannah was also living with them. They were all living in the cottage at the bottom of Smalldale (Smalldale End Cottage). In 1914 17 year old Percy played the part of Dick in the village pro-duction of Dick Whittington. The 10th/11th was heavily en-gaged in the Battle of Vreaucourt in France when Percy was killed in action on 22nd March 1918. He is commemo-rated on the Arras Memorial in France.

67794 Private Marshall Elliott 16th Battalion Yorks and Lancs Regiment (later 449589 Drummer King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry). Marshall was born to John and Susannah Ann Elliott in 1887. He was living with his cousin Percy Ashmore on Smalldale in early 1911 but married Lily Holmes in August that year and moved to Yard Head. He was working as a comb maker when he enlisted with the Yorks and Lancs in January 1917. Marshall was well known as a musician in Bradwell and he can be seen with his bugle in a photograph taken in 1911 (After Seth p47). With his musical interests it is not surprising that when he transferred to the KOYLI he did so as a drummer. For many years after the war Marshall played his bugle at the Remembrance Service in November (it is said that after his death in 1964 Marshall’s ghost appeared at the top of the stairs in the cottage in Smalldale to play the Last Post.)

240876 Private Samuel Middleton 2/6th Battalion Notts & Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment. In 1911 17 year old Samuel was living with his father Lewis and mother Rose Christianna in Hollowgate. Samuel was working as a farm labourer. He came safely through the war and on 1st Octo-ber 1919 he married Frances Wilson in Hope. When Sam-uel died on 8th June 1949 he was living at Hill Head.

74460 Driver (later 157301Sergeant) George Charles Bland No.5 Reserve Brigade Royal Field Artillery. When 29 year old George enlisted in 1915 he was living on Smalldale with his wife Eliza, who he had married in March 1913. He left for France the same year and served until February 1919. BRADDA DADS

All the Bradda Dads would like to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous New Year. We'd also like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported our fund raising events. We’ve had a good year and some of you will have spotted three new faces: Colln Mannion, Kevin Howatt and Andy Wilson who have joined our ranks. We’d also like to thank Peter Wallis for a year of hard work as Chair and welcome our new one, Darren Pembleton.

U3A IN THE HOPE VALLEY Hope Valley’s first U3A is 3 years old in July 2017. Any-one who is retired or semi-retired is eligible to become a member and our open meetings have free tea and coffee, a speaker

and a chance to join in with a variety of activities. We have open meetings every month at 2pm, alternating between Hathersage Memorial Hall on the third Thursday and Loxley Hall, Hope on the third Tuesday. If you want to take up a new interest there are currently 14 interest groups which meet mostly during the day and you can get more informa-tion by calling our secretary, Jacque Bevan on 650581 or from our website at www.u3asites.org.uk/hope-valley.

CHRISTMAS ILLUMINATIONS Bradwell has never been famous for our Christmas decora-tion and lights. It’s not a question of “Bah, Humbug!” but we certainly don’t try to compete with the likes of Great Huck-low. We have usually only had a village tree, and in recent years the Parish Council has illuminated a tree at either end of the village. We have also been trying to liven things up a bit and last year we provided Christmas tree brackets to sev-eral shops which were fitted with trees and decorated by the shop owners. Well, the effort seems to be paying off because this year the opinion of this resident is that the village looked absolutely lovely, thanks to the efforts of a number of householders. Bradwell is blessed with an ‘undulating topography’ (lots of hills) and particularly striking this year has been the festive lights on houses up the bank. Everyone will have noticed the spectacular lights on tall trees to the south end, complete with glittering star. (How do they do that?) Nobody wants to start a competition here, but to those resi-dents who took the time and trouble to make our village look a bit special this Christmas, a very big Thank You!

2017 The staff and distributors of the Bradwell News send New Year greetings and best wishes to all our readers. We thank you for your support and hope that your year will be very successful. We also thank our advertisers and sponsors for their help and support during 2016, without which production of a monthly newsletter would not be possible. Don’t forget that the col-umns of your newsletter are free for anyone wishing to keep residents up to date with what’s happening.

Personal announcements

ALAN RAMSDALE Alan died at home after a long illness at the age of 77. He was the third of five sons born to John and Bertha Ramsdale and the family lived on Smithy Hill before moving to Batham Road. At age 15 he left Bradwell C of E school and started work at Bamford Cotton Mill, where he met Kathleen whom he mar-ried in 1962. He returned to the mill after national service, continuing to work there until it closed in 1965. For the next nine years he worked in the foundry at Newburgh Engineering before moving to Carbolite Services, based at Bamford Mill, from where he retired. Alan enjoyed gardening and walking. He was chairman of Bamford indoor bowling club and vice chair and standard bearer of the Bamford branch of the Royal British Legion. The funeral was at Grenoside Crematorium on November 15th2016. He leaves wife Kathleen, a son and a daughter and two grandchildren, brothers Keith, Michael and Eric. His brother Brian predeceased him. Donations in mem-ory of Alan totalled £950 in aid of Ashgate Hospice.

AFFORDABLE HOMES – HOW TO REGISTER

There has been a lot of interest recently in the affordable homes which are to be built on the Newburgh site, with ques-tions about how residents can register for a house. Access to local affordable homes is handled via the “Home Options” scheme, managed by Derbyshire Dales District council. To help interested residents understand the scheme, the Brad-well Community Land Trust has arranged for members of the Home Options team, based in Matlock, to run a session in the village on 25th January, 2017. The team will take people through the scheme, explain who qualifies and also how to fill in the forms to get onto the Home Options list. Home Options personnel can also provide help and advice if you are strug-gling with your current housing, for instance if you are out-growing your current house, have mortgage or rent problems or have any other difficulties related to your home. There are over 100 affordable homes in Bradwell, of varying sizes, so if you want to find out more about the scheme and learn how to register your interest, why not come along to the Memorial Hall at 7.00 pm on 25th Jan.

BRADWELL AND EYAM SURGERY Wishing a Happy and Healthy New Year to all our patients from everyone at Eyam Surgery. Throughout winter remember to keep your home warm, eat well and stay active. These simple tips may seem obvious but they can be easily over-looked when you are busy. For more information visit www.nhs.uk/livewell/winterhealth It’s the time of year again when we run our annual patient survey. We will be giving out surveys at the surgery as well as emailing a link to do them online. Please can you help us by completing them and giving us your feedback. We value your opinions – they are very useful in helping us to improve the service we provide to you. Our “Patient Participation Group” or “PPG” is an opportunity for you to get involved with improve-
