COMING SOON! A New Public Shuttle Transportation System for Rowland Heights!A new shuttle transportation service is in the planning phase, which will increase mobility and enhance connectivity to Countyfacilities located within your community. Funded by the Board of Supervisors, the Department of Public Works will oversee theimplementation of the new transport system. The public will have an opportunity to provide input on the routes and shuttle pick-up and drop-off locations within Rowland Heights and Hacienda Heights. The fare will cost 25 cents per trip and will be freefor seniors (60 and older), children (under 5 years), and persons with disabilities. Community History and TraditionThe community of Rowland Heights takes its nameafter John A. Rowland. Rowland Heights issituated on land formerly known as Rancho LaPuente. The Rancho was a land grant of 49,000acres awarded to American settlers John A.Rowland and WilliamWorkman, by the Mexicangovernment in 1842.Rowland and Workmandivided their property and aportion of John A. Rowland’sland eventually becameRowland Heights. After hisdeath, his land wassubdivided and the areaeventually supported athriving agricultural andoil industry. After WorldWar II, crops werereplaced with housingdevelopments and the population grew from4,500 in 1960 to over 49,000 today.

A buckboard is a horse drawn carriagerepresenting the typical means of transportationused during the era that John A. Rowland lived.The first Buckboard Days celebration was heldin 1970 when several Rowland Heights Women’sClubs sponsored an annual 3-day carnival andfestival known as Buckboard Days. The eventinstilled a sense of pride and it was later decidedto organize an annual parade, which continuesto this day of honoring long-time area residentsand community leaders.

This 640-acre park offers picnic areas,youth camping, soccer, tennis; youthtennis lessons, and more. Free exerciseclasses take place every day, and a

“Senior Life Trail” exercise area is available to everyone thatincludes a one-mile walking-jogging path. An equestrianboarding facility is located at thefar south end of the park withaccess to trails. Picnic areas areavailable for rent, and the gazeboarea is suitable for weddings,family reunions and corporateevents. There are annual events including the Spring Festival heldin March. Other features include an outdoor amphitheater, theUme tree grove which blossoms in February, and the memorialCherry tree path that blooms March through April. Visit theHummingbird and Butterfly Garden planted with native plantsthat attract our winged friends. Concerts in the Park are held inthe warm evenings of July (see page 5). The remaining areas havebeen left in its natural state with hiking, biking and horse-backriding trails.

New Upgrades for RowlandHeights Library!

The Rowland Heights Library isclosed for renovation. Theconstruction project isscheduled to be completed bythe end of this year and willinclude $4.7 million worth ofimprovements such as:

• New ceiling and lighting fixtures. • New paint and furniture throughout the Library.• Newly upgraded bathrooms that comply with the

Americans with Disabilities Act.• Preservation of the existing lobby artwork by

artist Dora De Larios.

Did You Know? When the Library re-opens, take acloser look at the public art that was produced specificallyfor the Rowland Heights Library in 1978 when the librarywas built. It is part of the Los Angeles County ArtsCommission’s collection made up of contemporary andhistoric public artworks located on County property.

About the Artist: Dora De Larios spent her childhood living in downtown LosAngeles. She attended USC and in 1957 received aBachelor’s of FineArts. She credits herstyle to her worldtravels and studiedreligions and ancientart. Her artworkincludes sculptureslocated locally andall over the world.Also to her credit isa ceramic dinner place setting for the White House. Brush Clearance Inspections to Start in MayHillside property owners are reminded that on May 1st, theFire Department will begin conducting its annual brushclearance inspections in an effort to protect properties fromthe threat of wildfire. narcotic and burglary related crimes. They developed andparticipated in an operation in which 24 arrests were made in anarea where graffiti was becoming an issue. Since their inception,they have made 106 arrests, and have written 484 citations. Theirdedicated service has helped make Rowland Heights one of thesafest communities within the San Gabriel Valley.

• The County does not employ anyone to painthouse numbers on curbs.

• A solicitor cannot charge you for curb painting.You can volunteer to give a monetary donation.

• House number painters must obtain and carry aSolicitor’s License from the Treasure and TaxCollector and an Encroachment Permit from DPW.

• The property owner’s permission must first beobtained prior to any curb painting.

• Logos painted on the curb are not permitted inRowland Heights.

• The solicitor must provide you with a copy of thecurb painting guidelines, obtain your signatureand have given permission to paint your curb.

Local Road Improvement Projects Nogales Street Underground Utility ProjectProject Manager: Steve Dunn, Department of Public Works(626) 458-3168Unsightly electrical utility wires will be placed underground along Nogales Streetbetween the Pomona Freeway to the intersection of Killian Avenue/HonoreStreet in Rowland Heights. The $4.1 million project, paid for by SouthernCalifornia Edison, working with Verizon and Time Warner, will improve theappearance of the area and enhance public safety, by replacing 48 poles. Themajority of the excavation work will be completed by June of 2017. They are not allowed within a yardsetback as required by the County Zoning Code.
