Once upon a time…Bandol, whose name comes from Bendorium :the edge of the town of Tauroentum,was occupiedby the Romans.Their empire extended throughoutProvence with the victory of Sextius Calvinusover “ligures” in the year 124.

King Henri IV donated the territory of Bandol,including the Islands of Bendor and Rousse, toAntoine de Boyer.The First Lord of Bandol hashis castle built with a fort situated on the “éperonde la butte” (currently the Castle residence).

On 12 August 1715, the territory of Bandol wasseparated,and that of Le Cadiere was made official.In a first act on 14 August 1715,Lord François deBoyer de Foresta promised a house to live in andlands to cultivate to any individual who wantedto settle in the Bandol area and in his territory’ -with certain conditions.

These acts market to birth of the community ofBando, 120 years after Henry IV had given thefort of Bandol to Lord Antoine de Boyer as astronghold, to him and his descendants.

The church was built in 1746 under the nameand title of François de Sales by the law of 5 June1751.During that same year,Lord Ange de Boyerde Foresta gave “armes and sceau” to Bandol, thebackground of which are the “sinople” a goldenstar, surrounded by the inscription. DUX ETNAVIGANTUM SECURITAS.On 22 July, the last act of the Lord was passedwith the sale of assets and lands of the lord tothe town of Bandol.The ressources of the townwere very varied and included the fishing industry,the cultivation of wheat and vegetables, the wineand olive plantations, the foral industry and thecooperage industry.

Bandol intensified its wine production (the winesof Bandol are classified AOC) whose world-widereputation is ever increasing.

In the 19th century, thanks to the new coastalrailway, the first sun-seekers arrived at Bandol.

Classified as a Seaside Resort on 3 July 1923, thetown knew how to develop a quality tourist businessthanks to its extraordinary brightness, its moderateclimate, the protection of the natural sites. Sincethat moment,the BAy of Bandol has become oneof the most beautiful on the Cote d’Azur.

These first tourists, including such names asThomas Mann, Catherine Manfield, AldousHuxley,The lumiere brothers and Marcel Pagnol,spread the name of Bandol all over the world.The French stars Mistinguett, Raimu, Fernandeland Henri Salvador confirmed the town’sfashionable reputation… wich still lives on today !!

Die Einkommen der Stadt waren viel-fältig : Fischfang, Getreide - undGemüseanbau, Wein und Olivenplantagen,Blumenhandel und Fassherstellung. Bandolgelang es seine Weinproduktion zu intensivieren(Bandoler Weine haben die AuszeichnungA.O.C.) und der weltberühmte Ruf steigt vonJahr zu Jahr.Im 19. Jahrhundert kamen die erstenSonnenanbeter dank seiner neuenKüstenbahnlinie in Bandol an.Bandol wusste seine Anerkennung am 13.Juli1923 als Kurort zu nutzen und entwickeltedank seiner außerordentlichen Lichtstärke,seines Microklimas und seinesNaturschutzes einen Tourismus von hoherQualität.Die Bucht von Bandol ist eine der schönstender Côte d’Azur.Die ersten Touristen hießenThomas Mann, Cathérine Mansfield, AldousHuxley, die “Frères Lumières“, MarcelPagnol... Known as a shelter for sailors throughoutthe ages, Bandol offers excellent conditionsfor yachts. Its deep waters allow access toboats with large draft. In the 18th century,the Port of Bandol provided a natural andsure shelter, protected by a nine meter-highbreakwater. Its main activities were theexport of olives, olive oil and wines fromthe inland Provencal vineyards, and tunafishing. From the end of the 19th century,boats of up to 200 tons could be moored.Today, the port welcomes over 1600 boatsof all tonnages, large yachts, trawlers, tunaboats and pleasure boats of all types.Bandolis not one of those artificial ports built in afever of speculation. It is a sure berth, crea-ted by the experience of sailors and develo-ped through the sheer hard work of man.

Universal Exhibition of Wine (in a large hall decorated with frescoes, this curious exhibitioncovers the production of wine from 51 different countries. 8000 bottles are on display) : exhibi-tion about the creation of this island and the life of Paul Ricard is displayed. Footpaths around theisland ; arts and craft shops ; hotels and restaurants.

• SAINT-CYR-LES-LECQUESLocation 8 km (5 miles) westwards Bandol.There is a lovely and very large (2 km - 1,2 mile) beachof fine sand.To visit : the museum Tauorentum is built on the foundations of a Roman villa ;on dis-play are several mosaics, many Greek and Roman objets, fragments of frescoes and amphoraswhich show 2000 years of human history. The Statue of Liberty was installed at the Place Portalisonly in 1903 and not in 1886 as in New-York, but is the work of the same sculptor FrédéricAuguste Bartholdi. The aquatic leisure park “Aqualand”.

• SANARY-SUR-MERThe charming resort right next to Bandol, all pink and white, is popular at every season. The bayand the village are fairly well protected from the mistral by wooded hills, dominated to the northby the Gros Cerveau.

• OLLIOULES THE TOWN OF OLIVE TREEDirection Sanary, then D11 at 10 km (6 miles).Old arcaded houses and a Provençal Romanesque church (XIIth century) stand at the foot of theXIIIth century castle.Arts and craft shops in the town center.To visit : Ollioules gorge (R.N.8towards Marseille).

• SIX-FOURS-LES-PLAGESDirection D 559 towards Toulon at 11 km (6 miles). From the platform at the entrance to thefort (Altitude 210 m) a panorama extends over Toulon roadstead, Saint-Mandrier peninsula, CapSicié, Sanary bay, Le Brusc and the Island Les Embiez.The collegial church has a Romanesque nave and includes an old IV th century chapel. ChapelNotre Dame de la Pépiole : direction Sanary, then D 63 towards La Seyne-sur-mer.This chapel,which was built between the IVth century and VIth century, is one of the oldest Paleo-Christian buildings in France. It stands in a most attractive Mediterranean setting against the

Protection, and contains many votive offerings. From the top of Cap Sicié there is a dizzy drop tothe sea and a splendid panorama of the coast from the Islands of Hyères to the rocky inlets ofMarseille.

• LA SEYNE-SUR-MERDirection A50 at 15 km (9 miles) eastwards Bandol. Stronghold Balaguier (17 th century) : builtin 1636, the fort was recaptured from the English in 1793 by the young Napoleon, it is now a navalmuseum. There is a remarkable view of the coastline from Toulon to the Island Levant. VillaTamaris Pacha (19th century) : this beautiful building was built ni 1890 and is now an art museum.Stronghold L’Eguillette (17th century) : built in 1672.
