Friends, it has been a wild summer here at Pisgah Presbyterian Church! There have been youth activities, tennis games, Baptisms, funerals, vacations, and a lot of heat! My prayer for us all this August is that we will see the completion of the roof project as a symbol of our commitment to this place. Some of the wood that came out of the Sanctuary was from the very beginning (or at least from 1812-after the fire). What do you think? Can the beam with all of our names on it last another 227? It’s time to get involved!

You know, I once heard it said that at most churches 10% of the people do 90% of the work. I don’t think that’s true here, but we can do better! The Stewardship committee and the Mission and Evangelism Committee are both working hard to ensure that everyone is involved in the life of the church in some way. But, don’t wait to be asked! This is your church, so step up and get involved. This is an exciting time to be here at Pisgah! Join a committee! Here are the meeting dates and times, as well as the elders involved. Kerygma Continues

The Thursday morning Kerygma class continues to meet weekly in the Academy Building at 10:00a.m. Until Labor Day, we will be reading a current article each week, and then discussing it in class. Come and join us! The articles are available in Pete’s office for pick-up throughout the week, so pick one up and then join us if you’re able. Back in the Sanctuary

Being in the Academy Building has been fun, but it’s time to move our corporate worship back where it belongs: the Sanctuary! Be sure to join us on August 21st, for our first Sunday back in the Sanctuary. Also, if you are so able, on the morning of Friday, August 19th, join us at 10am for moving day. We will carry all of the pieces we removed back into the Sanctuary, and get set-up for worship on Sunday. Almost there!

ARE YOU A KID AT HEART? DO YOU LIKE FUN? VOLUNTEER WITH THE YOUTH GROUP! There are a couple ways that you (yes-you!) can volunteer with the youth group! This fall, you could:

Provide dinner for youth group meetings on Sunday

Be a youth advisor and hang out with the youth group on Sundays

Be a volunteer counselor at Burnamwood for a weekend

If you are interested, please contact Amy Carpenter on her cell phone at 859-381-7870 or through email at [email protected]

Youth Group!

I am so excited about the start of fall youth group! We’re starting with regular Sunday youth groups on August 21 and kicking things off with messy games in the fields at Pisgah. We’ll eat dinner and then it’s to the games! Make sure you come in clothes you don’t care about getting messy and either a change of clothes or a very large trash bag for your ride back home!

Yay! -Amy Carpenter (formerly, Amy Thompson)

BACK TO SCHOOL! Are you ready?!!!

Where does the time go?! Seems like we just wrapped up our Sunday school year, and it’s already time to gear up for the next! Are you excited? I know I am! Here’s what we have in store for you this year:

Toddlers & Preschoolers – Teachers Donna Lawrence and Ligia Jones return for another year with this growing class. The curriculum they’ve selected is Cokesbury’s Rock Solid for Preschool. Loads of Bible stories and fun activities await!

K-5 – Veteran Sunday school teacher Janet Lake will again join forces with relative newcomer Taylor Preston as they lead this energetic group of precocious youngsters. Using the Rock Solid curriculum for older ages, this class will continue building a solid foundation in Biblical knowledge while they paste stickers and glitter on anything that doesn’t move!!!

Middle & High School – Who’s leading this group? No one and everyone, that’s who. Linda Scott will facilitate as the youth take the lead in deeper explorations of some old, familiar Bible stories. Pete Jones has put together a curriculum that is sure to expand and challenge their understanding of God’s written word and what it says to us today. It’s back to the basics, from a whole new perspective!

Adults – Lisa Johnson is back as coordinator of this volunteer-led group. Each month, a different classmate will lead the discussion as the adults begin a new study that is lectionary-based and designed to go hand-in-hand with Worship themes, entitled “Feasting on the Word.”

All classes are held in the Academy Building beginning September 11. Join us at 9:45a.m. for a light snack, and then it’s off to Sunday school! A nursery is available during the Sunday school hour.

Pisgah’s Got Talent is Back!

The Stewardship & Planning Committee invites you to participate in the Pisgah Talent Show. It will be held in conjunction with the Community Club picnic on Monday, Sept. 5th. The picnic will start at 6:30p.m. and the talent show will start at 7:30p.m. Everyone is invited!! There will be a sign-up sheet for anyone interested in participating in the talent show outside church on August 7, 14, 21, and 28th. If you can sing, dance, play an instrument or act out a skit, please sign up. There is a rumor that Pisgah’s drill team is secretly working on a new routine. You don’t want to miss the talent or the laughs! See you there! Lindsey McHatton Talent Scout

Confessing the Beatitudes ~~~

Monthly Ladies Bible Study with Mary Shepherd Circle to begin Tuesday, September 6 @ 10:00 a.m.

in the Academy Building

This is an invitation to all the women of the church. Please be a part of our monthly bible study at 10:00a.m. the first Tuesday of the month, beginning September 6 and ending in May. We will be following a study written by Margaret Aymer entitled Confessing the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are some of the most beloved teachings of Jesus and the author places them within their literary, historical and cultural contexts. The study books are $8 (payable to Mary Shepherd Circle) and available now in the Academy Building. If you have not been to a Mary Shepherd Circle meeting, we would love to have you! Here’s a description of a typical meeting. We start by sharing concerns and celebrations to help guide our prayers throughout the month. This is followed by a devotion, the bible study for that month and then a short business meeting. Typically we adjourn by 11:30. Please invite a friend and come to our September 6th meeting! We will start with the first lesson that day. See Rhonda Fister (621-6420) or Leslie James if you have any questions about the study guides.

Own a beautiful piece of Pisgah

Last year several tall walnut trees were removed. One was dead and the others were dying. Those have been milled into rough-sawn boards 1” and 2” x 10’ to 12’. Total is about 1000 board feet. Most boards are clear and straight, really select stuff. According to the local hardwood store, that quality is getting hard to find. The wood from the dead tree is fairly dry, and the rest will need some seasoning. We would like to make this stock available to Pisgah woodworkers and to members who would like to have articles made from this lumber. The suggested donation is $4.00 per board foot. This is a bit less than market price. If you would like to have a real piece of Pisgah, please contact Phil Bisbee at 873-7175. The boards are seasoning at his home. Any wood remaining at the end of the year will be sold on the open market to raise money for the Church. Your Property Committee

”15 million children in America, 1 out of every 4, are alone and un-supervised after school.”

“A steady stream of after school evaluations show important gains for children not only in terms of academic achievement, but also in terms of safety, discipline, attendance and avoidance of risky behaviors”.

Hello Pisgah members! In the last edition of the Pisgah Post, some of the results of the Mentors&Meals pilot program were shared. Since that time, we have received academic outcomes: 36 out of the 40 students who attended the program at any point throughout the 8 week pilot had improvements in their Grade Point Average in the 4th Quarter versus the 3rd Quarter. As a group, the average GPA increased from 2.4 to 2.7. As previously reported, 30 high school mentors collectively dedicated over 430 service hours to tutoring. At the end-of-year Awards Assembly, these 30 students were recognized by High School Vice-Principal Jennifer Forgy and given certificates of hours earned along with personal letters of recommendation (written by me). Finally, we are pleased to report that M&Ms has received a generous grant from the Transylvania Presbytery to continue our work in the Fall! On June 18, a task force of 16 previous M&M volunteers met at Pisgah to discuss the things that went well in the pilot program as well as the opportunities for improvement. The following was decided:

M&Ms will start on or around September 12

allowing time for the teachers to get to know

which students might need academic help at

mid-term and giving time for M&Ms to recruit

and train volunteers and mentors.

It was unanimously voted to continue to offer

the program 4 days/week, Mon-Thursday from

3:30-5:30p.m.

The task force agreed that a meal was an

important aspect to the program. (Community

Meal will continue to provide dinner on

Monday, Pisgah will help to staff the meal on

Tuesday/Thursday, and FCC will provide

Wednesday meals. God’s Pantry will provide

meat and canned goods)

We have identified very specific "Roles and

Responsibilities" for adult volunteers to help the

program run more smoothly

M&Ms program will be offered again to the 7th

grade "alumni" who had participated last year in

addition to opening up the program to 40 new

6th grade students.

This year there will be many wonderful opportunities for volunteers. You can give 1 afternoon per quarter, 1 afternoon per month or 1 afternoon per week. You might want to hang out and talk with the middle school students, mentor the mentors, get creative in the kitchen, share one of your talents- do you like to sing, play an instrument, have an interesting career or hobby you might want to share? Invite a friend to lead an art project or teach kids how to do “Zumba”. If you would like to be involved in Mentors&Meals in ANY WAY this fall- please contact Lisa Johnson, [email protected] OR [email protected], 859-552-6873.

2011 is a bit beyond the half-way point for this fiscal year, and the latest update comes from the July

Treasure’s Report. As of July 15, 2011 we are 54 % of the way through this fiscal year and our total income is at 48.63% of budget. Pledged income is at 47% of budget and unpledged income, also known as the loose-plate offering, is at 56% of budget. Although the total income is slightly behind the budget at this point in the year, the Administration Committee continues to keep a watchful eye on the income figures as we review the Treasurer’s Report at our regular monthly meetings. The expense side of the ledger continues to be positive and once again this month, total expenses are well below budget. Our expenses are at 43% of the budgeted amount which is 11% below budget year-to-date. Everyone who is responsible for expenditures can be commended for their continued great efforts to manage expenses. The Administration Committee will be continuing its work toward compiling a Pisgah Policy and Procedures Manual at our next meeting in August. As a reminder of this project description, the committee wants to gather all of the policies that are currently in effect at Pisgah Presbyterian Church and then work to develop any policies or procedures that are needed in the life of our church. Finally, all policies and procedures will be compiled in a binder to be used as an on-going reference manual. If you are responsible for or know of an existing policy that should be included in this reference manual please contact, Pete Jones, Todd Cassidy, or me.

TO: The Pisgah Post – August 1, 2011 FROM: Hank Graddy – Greetings from Pisgah Mission and Evangelism ********************************************* SACRED AIR Please plan to join us for the second Pisgah Academy day of study and work on September 17, 2011, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Like last year’s Pisgah Academy day, we have organized this program as a satellite event in coordination with the 16th Annual Festival of Faiths in Louisville, Ky. from November 2 – 7, 2011. Our theme this year is Sacred Air: Breath of Life. We are honored to have several of the leaders of the 2011 Festival of Faiths on our program this year. Our first speaker is Kyle Kramer, who directs the graduate lay ministry program at Saint Meinrad Archabbey, a Benedictine monastery and school of

theology in southern Indiana. He is also an organic farmer. His most recent book: A Time to Plant: Life Lessons in Work, Prayer and Dirt, will be our primary text. He is one of 24 Catholic Climate Ambassadors, designated to discuss the moral implications of climate

change. Our panel discussion will include several different perspectives of Sacred Air. Kathleen Lyons, PhD., is Professor Emeritus at Bellarmine University, and is the Festival of Faiths Coordinator, and she will provide a Christian view. She will also introduce the Sacred Air: Faith In Action Tool Kit, Volume 3, which we will use for our final work session following the panel discussion. Todd Graddy, LCSW, MS, Yoga Alliance RYT 500, will provide a more ancient view from Sanskrit teachings on Sacred Air and Health. Tom FitzGerald, JD., and recipient of the 2008 Heinz Award in the Environment, will provide the legal perspective on Clean Air. After our workshop on Sacred Air: Breath of Life, we will again enjoy a meal of local food, and fellowship. Kyle Kramer opens his most recent book – our text – with his discussion about coming home: From “Chapter One: Coming Home” “In Scripture, blessings empower characters to do things that they might never dare or manage on their own power alone. God blessed Noah, and on the strength of that blessing, Noah and his family repopulated and remade the earth after the flood. God promised a blessing to Abram, which gave him the courage to leave a familiar place and people, venture out into unknown territory,

and ultimately become the father of a nation. Jacob wrested his brother Esau’s blessing from his father Isaac, and later, on the bank of the Jabbok, wrestled a blessing out of God, who renamed him and renewed the promise that his posterity would become the people Israel. Ron’s blessing worked similarly on me. That same afternoon, I bought the property.” Mr. Kramer also contributed to the Sacred Air: Faith In Action Tool Kit, with the Benedictine perspective: Benedictines make a vow of stability: they commit their lives to one particular community in one particular place. This “vocation of location” might seem provincial in comparison to the modern American ideal of mobility and cosmopolitanism, but it enables Benedictines to practice responsible stewardship of creation. When you live in a place long enough, you pay attention to the place itself and the people, plants, and animals that inhabit it. This attention leads to knowledge of a place’s gifts and limits. Such intimate knowledge engenders personal investment, affection and love. Knowledge combined with love is the most solid foundation for real environmental responsibility. Stability also means that Benedictines are able to make long-term commitments necessary for ecological stewardship. Few of our global environmental issues can be solved quickly. Healing degraded land takes generations, and even green technologies, such as solar panels or green building techniques, have long-term economic paybacks. Because Benedictines think in terms of centuries, they are acutely aware of their responsibility to future generations and able to invest the time and capital to ensure the continued life of their community, as well as the planet. In a fast-paced, novelty-worshiping modern world, patience and long-term commitments are a radical stance, since “radical,” translated literally, means “rooted.” Registration is $25 per person or $30 per family, and includes A Time To Plant and our meal. Register online at: http://pisgahchurch.org/academy-day-2011/ Mark 16:15 “And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to all creation.” Mark 16:20 “And they went out and proclaimed the good news everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it.” The Mission and Evangelism Committee helps Pisgah Church members go into the community to proclaim the good news and to meet the needs of our neighbors and to help our neighbors “find” Pisgah Church. The Mission and Evangelism Committee has a number of other plans and projects – such as the M & M work for Woodford County youth and the Pisgah Victory Garden. Please join us at our regular committee meeting after church on the first Sunday each month.

Peace to you all, Hank Graddy
