HOWDYRACCOONS! I hope everyone's having an amazing summer! It has been a busy sum-

mer for me: summer school, hospital internship, AP summer home-

work, and of course the big pile of Key Club work. However, all of

these activities don't stop me from doing the best for the division!

School is slowly creeping up on us, and that means clubs are about to

go take on new members in full gear! Remember to take what you

have learned at OTC and apply it to your leadership ethics! Once

again, remember to make sure you are interacting with you Kiwanis

clubs; attend their meetings, help out with their events, constantly

update them on club activities. After all they are the ones that are

sponsoring your club; they are your main support!

It may seem early right now, but I advise all clubs to start planning for

the major events coming up in the next few months! It's never too

early to start preparing for Fall Rally, Rose Float Building, DCON,

etc! You surely don't want to miss out on these events, so work out a

fundraising plan with your Kiwanis club! I want to see more Rac-

coons at DCON next year, so let's all work together to make sure a

lot of us are there!

Hey Div 36E! I'm Nora Lu, the club president of San Gorgonio High

School. I love sports, especially swimming. I'm pretty silly and dorky most of

the time, however, I can get serious when it comes down to business. My first ac-

tion that I took this after I accepted the role as president was creating a website in

order to retain membership. Members can sign up for their own account, access

the calendar, and other necessities. In addition, I attended DCON, OTC, and I

talked to other current/past presidents to gain more information and tips. I want

to simply increase membership and really make Key Club stand out in the lime-

light at my school. I've learned a few tricks to get people motivated or interested in

the club, and I have been using/planning to use them this summer and for the rest of the year. During fresh-

men orientation, I'll use the clothespin and flash mob strategies to attract attention. I have to bolster my club

before I can help with the division, but I do encourage divisional events. I think that is the best way to bond

and I'm looking forward to the best year ever!

Hello, I am Sasha Webb the president of Yucaipa High School's Key Club. This year I will be a senior

and I am ecstatic to begin the school year and accomplish all that i plan to. One challenge I have for myself is to

take my hobby of reading and reestablish a book club at my school. Along with book club, I have set goals for

Key Club. This year there were three officers that had been unable to do their job

until the end of their terms. This put a strain on the amount of events that the club

put on and the member participation decreased dramatically. I hope to strengthen

the bond between officers and members. Last year the club did not have any game

days, socials, or fundraisers and the meetings were just business. This year I want to

have ice breakers, socials, or game days at least once a month. I want the club to get

to know everyone there and feel more like a family. I hope to increase participation

by showing the members that they matter and do make a difference while having

fun. I plan to make this year fun and productive.

Key Club has been a very motivational and welcoming experience for me when I

started. As Key Club President, I have learned to maintain an open mind and

become more than just a leader, but an example. For this upcoming term, I

hope to pass on all good characteristics that Key Club has taught me to my new

members as well to the existing members. Other than being an awesome Key

Club president, I enjoy being commissioner of rallies for my ASB class, and as

all girls have in common I love to shop for SHOES! Community service has be-

come an ultimate hobby that I look forward to doing everyday!!

Hi, I am Jeffrey Hu born in Los Angeles, California on September 12, 1994.

I am currently a senior attending Citrus Valley High School, Class

of 2012. Some of my hobbies and interests include eating, sleeping, bboying,

playing cards, and most of all, Key Club. As Citrus Valley High School’s Key

Club President, I plan on increasing our club’s membership and to build a

foundation to keep our members interested throughout the year with our

upcoming service opportunity to give back to the community one at a time

allowing our members to build character and develop leadership. Most im-

portantly, we will build a strong bond between our Key Club and our fellow

Kiwanians. With all that in mind, I believe this will be a year to remember

for everyone onboard our ride to success. Division 36 East, Key Club, Un-

leash the Beast!

Hey Everyone, my name is Bhavin Jindal. I have been a proud member of Key Club for

4 years and have seen the club and the division progress over the years. Besides Key

Club I am involved in a lot of extracurricular activities such as cross country, Academic

Decathlon, and Mock Trial. This year as President I will introduce new and old mem-

bers alike to different fun and exciting activities to increase membership involvement

and success of the overall club. This year I am aiming for a club of 120 members with a

total of 2,000 hours completed by the end of the Key Club Year. The club will also be

more involved within the district and we can't wait to start working all the other clubs.

Pacific High School

Hey Key Clubbers! My name is Tyler Chung and I am the Redlands East

Valley High School Key Club President! I will be a Junior this coming

year and am interested in many things such as golf, piano, parkour, dancing,

singing, and hanging out, just to name a few. As one of the awesome presidents

in our division, I want to help improve our Division in any way we can! We have

set many goals to aim for throughout the year making Key Club bigger, stronger,

and more exciting! I am going to set some awesome events and hope everyone

will have fun! By the way, I'm very friendly so don't be afraid to run up and say

hi!

Hey guys, Sammi Strade here, president of Redlands High School! I

have been in Key Club since my freshman year and I have seen it grow and

improve SO MUCH! I can only hope we can continue to keep on our path-

way of success in the upcoming year. I also hope to provide more service to

my members along with teaching them that while Key Club may have a very

alluring social aspect to it, it's also something which they can be proud to be

apart of. It is a group that actually makes a difference and that's something

that should not be forgotten. With the dedication of my officers, members,

Kiwanians etc. I am determined to make this the most awesome year in the

history of Key Clubs. In the words of Al Jolson, "You ain't seen NOTHING

yet." And those words will be what motivates me throughout the year. To

show the ENTIRE WORLD (or maybe just the community, we'll see how it

goes) what a life changing and life SAVING organization Key Club is!

Summertime is the best time to plan out club budgets and fundraiser ideas to start out fresh in the upcoming school year. Use your spare time efficiently and start thinking on how you will handle the membership process, dues, and keeping track of the club’s money. Car washes, restaurant fundraisers, bake sales, etc. are all excellent ideas to raise money! Let’s strive for the best and aim for Distinguished Treasurers!

EDITORS

Even though it’s summer, it’s still time for Key Club! As

editor, it is important that you are informed on any

events that your Key Club is planning. This is critical be-

cause you will help advertise the events and get the word

out to everybody. Bulletin announcements, flyers, posters,

emails, etc. are all great ways to inform the Key Clubbers.

Also, the submission of articles and visuals for our divi-

sional newsletters is your job. Anyone may write the arti-

cles, but it YOUR job to submit them to our Lt. Gover-

nor by the 18th of each month. The articles may be on

anything! It can be about any events that you attended or

even what Key Club means to you. For visuals, it is more

preferable if they are not “posed.” Have a great summer

and don’t forget some sunscreen!

PRESIDENTS AND VICE PRESIDENTS

Be proactive and go out there and dream big! Start brainstorming ideas and goals that you wish to fulfill with your club and the divi-sion as well. It’s time to start researching, planning, and putting it all into action! Keep in touch with your Key Club to inform them on any community service events during the summer or even have a social to reunite with them again. Not only that, but be sure to keep your board members updated on any duties or tasks that must be completed during the summer.

SECRETARIES

Summer is a great time to start brainstorming ideas to help your

Key Club perform at its very best! Organization and planning is

critical as a secretary. Instead of baking in the blazing sun, meet up

with your board members to come up with ideas for the upcoming

school year. Keep these questions in mind:

+ How will the board officers recruit members?

+ How will you keep track of the member’s community service

hours?

+ Do you have a template for minutes during the club meet-

ings?

+ What is the best way to register new members?

+ Did membership decrease or increase? What might be the

reasons to this change?

Keep in mind that MRF’s are due MONTHLY. Don’t submit them

in late as your club will be deducted of club points. However, if you

turn them in early, your club will earn even more points!

service in the SUN Now that summer break is here, it’s time for us Raccoons to finally relax from school. However, don’t forget

about Key Club! Key Club does not take a break during the summer. Therefore, it is crucial for our clubs to

be active and participate in community service events. Now is the time for the new board officers to meet up

and plan out a detailed and organized plan for the entire term. Events and fundraisers should be planned out

ahead of time to avoid confusion and any obstacles that might arise. Now let’s put our heads together and

help make a difference!

2011-2012 Divisional Shirt Designs

Are you an artistic Raccoon? If so, then here’s your chance to show off your creative side! Our shirts were in-credible last year, but now it’s time to have a new edition of our divisional shirts. If you are up for the chal-lenge, check out these guidelines for the shirt below:

+ Mascot: Raccoon + Colors: Blue and Yellow + Must contain a Key Club logo with nothing covering any part of the logo + The names of all 7 schools must be present + Must include the words: "Key Club,” “Division 36 East,” “Region 4,” “Cali-Nev-Ha (or CNH),” and

“2011-2012"

You may send in a concept design (it can even be in pencil), to our LTG, Nick Sianipar. If your design/concept gets chosen, you will get a free shirt! All designs/concepts are due by

TERM GOALS Our Lt. Governor, Nick Sianipar, has two goals so far for our division so listen up!

+ >$2,000 for PTP by Fall Rally South (Nov. 19)

- He would like each of our 7 clubs in the division to raise at least $285.71 each. Let's show the rest

of Cali-Nev-Ha that the Most Improved Division from DCON 2011 is still improving. There are

many ways to fundraise for PTP; START PLANNING NOW. Proactive planning will surely get you success in the future!

+ Organize at least one service event hosted by your club!

- This means actually organizing your own service event, something that your club organizes, not Ki-wanis or another organization. You all could even do inter-club events, so you guys aren't alone

in planning. If you guys need help with any ideas, please feel free to contact our Lt. Governor,

Nick Sianipar.

Let’s show everyone how much Division 36 East has improved to become very active within the members and

the division overall. It’s our time to shine so let’s strive for the best!

CREATIVITY flow

As we all know, each club needs to raise $285.71 for PTP this year. My officers and I have decided to begin doing so

immediately to make sure we actually reach that goal. Our car wash was held on July 2nd and it turned out well. Those

that volunteered were provided Arizona Iced Tea/water, and burritos/tacos. We all had fun taking turns to hold up

signs and advertising them by walking across the street during a red light to catch the attention of those that stopped.

We also did our chants and taught them to the incoming freshmen that attended who will be joining Key Club this

year. It was the first car wash that my officers and I have had to organize and provide materials for. Despite the beaten

up signs, lack of good sponges, and lack of a second long hose, we managed to collect $161! I’m so proud of my awe-

some Spartans! I can guarantee that the next car wash will be much better.

For those creative key clubbers out there, if you haven't already heard about the t-shirt design contest, there is

still the chance to start. Any ideas, sketches, or completed drawings could win you a free shirt and the accom-

plishment of having designed the division 36 east t-shirt. Though, if you are just starting, you better hurry as

the contest ends the thirtieth of July. There are a couple of the students from our school, Citrus Valley, who

have already been trying to design an interesting t-shirts for the contest. I personally have been working on a

variation of last year's comic book shirt. While Laura Lim, one of our club's members,

has come up with a new and unique idea for the next year's shirt design. Although it is a competition, I recommend that everyone who is interested try to participate because,

even if you don't win, the experience is really fun.

Recently, I went on a tennis team fieldtrip and we passed through Compton along the

way. Someone happened to be driving a Mercedes Benz with their wheels highly elevat-

ed. At first, I thought it was a little strange but then I started to laugh. Seeing that car

made my day. The moral of this story is that the person who altered the car probably

wasn't sure whether they should have done something like change a Mercedes Benz, but

they did. The result ending up being great because I am sure it made a lot of people smile.

So even if you’re not sure about designing a shirt, you should try anyway because you might do something

great, cool or funny that would not have appeared if you didn't try. If that story doesn't make you want to en-

ter, you should try anyway just for the fun experience.

As you should already know Key Club is a student lead organization that has been so influential with past com-

munity projects. We strive to promote only the best in our members and our leaders because we know that we are essen-

tially role models to the public in how a compassionate member of society should operate in these trying times. We hon-

or the fact that our members are so devoted to give up much of their time, even with a busy academic schedule, to help

in certain issues. Even though they don’t get personal recognition; their reward is in the smiles of the people touched by

our work or others influenced and motivated by our willingness for change. In closing, I implore all new members to

join us at our meetings and events as we strive to become closer a leader and bring forth a brighter day to a new tomor-row. Also, I beseech those who are not members to experience the joy and fun that so many devoted key clubbers have

already come to expect from We seek to build character and direct future leaders with honor and integrity that our bold

traditional colors stand for.

Our division’s pool party/social was a very amusing day for all of those who at-

tended. The event was mainly for officers to meet each other and basically

hangout at our Divisional Secretary, Isabelle Chu’s, house. After swimming in

the sun, everyone headed inside the house to

play Battle of the Bands on the Wii and cha-

rades afterwards. The social was a great way for

everyone to become better friends and bond more. Later, a majority of the attendees went to

Buffalo Wild Wings Grill for dinner. The social was definitely a fun and successful

night! Be sure to attend our next social if you don’t want to miss out on all of this fun!

The 68th Key Club International Convention took place from June 29-July 3. I travelled as part of the Cali-Nev-Ha District Tour, so we left for Phoenix on June 27th. One word basically sums up my whole experience at ICON: unforgettable. On the first day, we got to explore the massive and beautiful JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort, where we also took a dip through four acres of fun-filled pools, Lazy River, waterslides, and serpen-tine shaped pools. It was definitely a great way to cool down in the blister-ing 115+ degree weather

in Phoenix! On the second day of tour, we travelled as a district to visit the beautiful Grand Canyon, and we also took some pit stops to visit the scenic Sedona and to go on a Navajo reservation.(cont.)

(cont.) From the third day on, convention was officially in session, and it was crazy to see the vast amounts of Key Club members from all over the world! Meeting lieutenant governors from other districts was definitely in-teresting, and seeing how different all of the districts work as a board. I got closer with people from CNH, and I also made a lot of new friends as well! From the Meet & Greet, to the workshops, to the general sessions, and to the crazy dances, I had TONS of fun. If you want to know more about per-sonal experience at ICON, feel free to ask me!

ing Kiwanis for their donations is the way to go! I believe that this is

an opportunity that a Key Club member will never forget. You get to see things in a totally differ-

ent perspective. At ICON you really see how Key Club truly is an international organization, and it’s a great way to participate in voting for the next international board and voting for changes in

the Key Club International Bylaws. All Key Club members should take this opportunity, so start

saving up for ICON 2012!

So, this past month has been all about summer school, summer homework, summer condi-

tioning, and summer fun for our members. There hasn't been a push (yet) to introduce

summer meeting due to the bee-usy schedules of our fellow Key Clubbers, but I'm sure that

we all have the spirit. The OTC on the 18th was about the same as last year I'm told, with a

good turnout, icebreakers, and valuable information that will definitely help Officers.

This month, the board planned to have a meeting with all the members but we're now post-

poning our meeting until some time next month. As far as community services, we had a

couple members go to the Family Fun Night at the Highland YMCA and help make food

and serve to the families who attended the event.

This month, four members from Redlands High School volunteered at the Strawberry

Festival, where members helped in setting up the event, assisted in any way they could,

and also helped cleaned up. We also had 20 members join the End-of-the-Year divisional

banquet, held at Edwards Mansion, where we received many awards.

Our president, Tyler, has been out of the country almost this whole month, but he had already

set up some ongoing service projects. Members are able to go to Plymouth Village and help out

during the allotted times. So far, we have not heard from anyone that has helped out there,

but we are keeping our fingers crossed. At the beginning of the month some members helped

out at the Kiwanis table at the Strawberry Festival at Plymouth Village. In addition, a REVHS

student (eager to become a Key Clubber) went out to join the fun. He contributed another 4.5

hours to our membership hours. Also at the beginning of the month, many of our members

went to our very first Key Club banquet, where they had a lot of fun.

Our club was recognized for turning in our MRF early, and Nora Lu received the Member of the

Year award for our school. In addition, we attended the Strawberry Festival with other clubs in

our division, which bolstered our divisional bond. Furthermore, non-officers attended OTC/

DCM and that was beneficial because it taught them more about Key Club. This encouraged the

m to participate in more events and become more involved in Key Club. One of the members w

ho went to OTC even applied to become a task coordinator for the next DCM.

Although we did not really focus in community service this month, June was productive

and definitely a fun experience for key club officers. We focused in trying to get all the

officers together and learn what their roles as officers are. By attending the Officer Training

Conference in Rancho Cucamonga, we were able to get to know each other better and get

started on ideas for the next year. We enjoyed the ice breakers and the presentations that

were very helpful. However, most importantly, we realized that every individual in key club

has a major effect in the way we represent ourselves and the effectiveness of our service.

This Month our club had a service project and a fundraiser. we raised a total of $275.00.

We also had an officer meeting and have begun to plan for next year.
