Q1) Do you think the product is typical of a music video?

Why/Why not?

Answers

YesNo

15 People said they thought our video was typical of the conventions of a music video mainly because we used both a studio and an on location setting. Also the pace of the video matched the song and the performance worked with the music. The 1 person who did not think this said “No, I think it was original”

Q2) Does anything make the video different/stand out from the

typical music video i.e. does it break conventions.

Does it break con-ventions?

YesNoNo Com-ment

People said it doesn’t break the conventions but the fairy the theme makes it stand out. People who said yes also commented on the fairy tale theme but also had more specific ways of breaking the conventions such as the artist dying at the end of the video and the muted colour pallet which isn’t seen very often.

Just The Beginning 1

From the feedback we learnt that people really liked the lighting we set up in the studio, based on the Ed Sheeran video we watched. A lot of people also thought the playing of the guitar fit in well with the artists style, linking back to acoustic rock. There were also individuals who liked other aspects. We were slightly disappointed that no one picked up on the importance of the narrative.

Q4) Did the pace of the video fit the song?

15 People agreed, saying how the lip syncing was really good, the editing fitted etc. However, 1 person said “Somewhat” and they felt that the shots were too drawn out. Below is a sample of scanned in questionnaire answers.

Q5) Do you think the branding of the artist is consistent

throughout print and video products?

Everyone, 16 people, agreed largely because – “The colour scheme and logos are present throughout” , “Same themes, costumes and image throughout” and “The mise en scene is consistent” Those who commented also said they liked the brand image of our artist. We were pleased with this as we worked hard to keep the brand image consistent and in keeping with the artists style.

Presumably, the people who thought we needed brighter lighting meant on the location shots (as the same amount of people said lighting was something they liked). We agree with this because in the forest, we didn’t have the equipment to light the scenes how we’d have liked to. 2 people thought the video got predictable part way through (with her

running through the forest) and that we needed more of a story. We don’t particularly agree because of the three fairy tale references but can see how the setting might have made it all seem similar. 3 people commented on lip syncing, (which was again something people liked) and said it needed slight improvement in certain places. We think we were very careful in making sure the lip syncing was as in time as physically possible but admit it may still have slight problems. Watching the video back, we realised we’d used a shot of her with a shoe on after she’d supposedly lost it, however, isn’t hugely noticeable as only one person picked up on continuity.

Q7) After watching the video, would you consider purchasing

the artists album/single?

Answers

Yes No - GenreMaybe No - Un-

derstand?No comment

When we filmed these answers, no body said they would buy the album or single however these answers clearly state otherwise. The reason we asked this question was to find whether our music video successfully promoted the artist, the song and the print products.

The fact that people said no because of the genre is completely understandable, however, 2 people said they do not understand the video, which is why they wouldn’t buy it. However, we believe that you don’t necessarily have to understand the video to like or want to buy the song.
