5th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2016

May you find Christ here . . . May you bring Christ to the world.

Excerpt from a letter recently received from Franciscan Works & Libe-rian Mission, Inc . . . “Thank you again for welcoming Mary Kathryn McDevitt who spoke on our behalf. We recently received your parish’s dona-tion! You have provided us with $11,246 - quite a phenomenal contribution for our Mission!”

Liberia Mission, Inc., located in West Africa, is a community of love, learning, work and prayer. Liberia Mission includs homes for boys and girls and two churches serving the neighboring community of families.

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8) Every day – in little ways and in big ways – God asks, “Whom shall I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry or just someone to open a door for a stranger, God con-stantly provides doors of opportuni-ty. The next time you hear God call-ing, have the courage to walk through the door and say “Here I am, Lord.”

The Jubilee Year of Mercy Got PRAYERS? Assumption’s Prayer Teams will be available after all Masses this weekend, to pray with and for you!

Here are some amazing facts about the prayer teams: • Prayer teams are parishioners who bring

Christ to the world through prayer. • We’ll pray for you, your loved ones, your

friends...anyone whom you’d like to lift in prayer.

• We pray for intentions big AND small! If it’s on your heart, bring it to Christ!

• Teams will do ALL the praying if you’d prefer! Just bring yourself and your inten-tions.

• Want to give thanks and praise to God? We love to do that!

Financial Peace University Learn to handle your money “God’s way” using principles found in scripture.

A 9 week course incorporating lessons from Dave and his staff on various topics including: Savings, Budgeting, Real Estate, Retirement and more. Begins Wednesday, February 17, 7pm, St. Joseph Radio café’ in Harvester and facilitated by parishioner Susan Prinster 636.940.0426. Or go to daveramsey.com for more information or to sign up for the classes.

SACRED CONVERSATIONS ON RACE Last month over 24 St. Charles County congregations, including Assumption, St. Cletus, St. Charles Borromeo, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Sisters of the Precious Blood and St. Peter met for a con-versation on race. Our next event, titled Exploring One’s Own Ex-perience with Race and Culture will take place at CPPS Mother-house Conference Room on Feb 23 and Mar 29, 7:00pm.

The experience will be led by two trained facilitators. The experi-ence will be interactive, nonjudgmental and respectful of your own experience and understandings. Aligned with Pope Francis’ call for inclusiveness, this will be a starting point for all of us. Fact and research yet prayerful, this will help in our own way of thinking and build empathy and understanding for us as God’s people. For more information contact: Sr. Ellen Orf: [email protected].

Jesus and Peter What really happens between Jesus and Peter in today’s Gospel? The great catch of fish may well be a miracle, but Peter could have easily remained proud. He could have said Jesus got lucky. I frequently claim to under-stand things better than God; until my mind and heart are opened, usually through some suffering. What prompts Peter to fall to Jesus’ knees and announce his need for mercy? It had to be more than the miracle of the great catch. He must have seen into Jesus’ eyes, into his heart. Something in Jesus opened Peter’s eyes, opened Peter’s heart, opened Peter’s will to relationship with Jesus. He purposely gets close to Jesus, in a posture of surrender, and then says, “Depart from Me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Peter confesses his identity as a sinner very pub-licly. He is risking everything. And we are waiting on the answer. Deep down we know we are just like Peter; in great need of healing, but often too stubborn to admit it. And when we do admit it, we too dare God to walk away. And we wait for an answer…

It is in this moment with Peter, early in his public minis-try, that we see Jesus as the Incarnation of God’s Mercy, the face of Compassion, the source of Healing, the prom-ise of Freedom, the power of Love. Jesus calls Peter to follow him, to become a catcher of men. Jesus calls us in the very same way.

Pope Francis began his papacy preaching about God’s Mercy. He has invited us, in this Jubilee year of Mercy, to join Peter in this surrendering to Jesus so we also can be caught up into the ocean of God’s Mercy. God is waiting for us. God is longing for us. Francis says, “God forgives not with a decree but with a caress.” Let our minds, hearts and wills be open enough, soft enough and honest enough to trust the caress of God’s cheek resting gently against ours, drying our tears and sending us to bring Christ to the world. Fr Mitch

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2016

Last week our Catechu-mens (those who have not yet been baptized) were anointed with the Oil of Catechumens.

This Oil is believed to strengthen the one being baptized to turn away from evil, temptation and sin, and prepare them for the struggle of the Christian life. The Catechu-men is also anointed as a symbol of being an heir of the Kingdom of God, as kings and queens were anointed at coronations, and empowered for their Christian life as prophets were anointed for their ministry.

Next weekend at all the Masses we will celebrate the Rite of Sending with our Candidates and Catechumens. The Rite of Sending is a parish celebration that "sends" Cate-chumens and Candidates to the cathedral to celebrate the Rite of Election with the archbishop. In the Rite of Send-ing those preparing for baptism are invited to come for-ward and sign the "Book of the Elect" as a sign of their desire to be numbered among the chosen of God. The Book of the Elect is then presented to the archbishop at the Rite of Election. Those who are already baptized, in the Catholic church or in another denomination, have already had their names written in the Book of Life. The Rite of Election is a the time when the Church invites or "elects" the Catechumens and Candidates to the sacra-ments of initiation. The Rite of Election formally brings to an end the Catechumenate period. Now they are ready to move into their final preparation period.

A poster of our Candidates, Catechumens and Sponsors will be in the Narthex now and throughout Lent. If you happen to see one of them at Mass, please give them a word of encouragement and let them know that you're praying for them. We will have individual prayer cards available next week so that everyone might have the op-portunity to be a prayer partner to one or several of our Candidates and Catechumens throughout Lent. This is an exciting time for us as a community in Christ to pray for our newest disciples that the fire of the Holy Spirit will inspire them and guide them in their final steps to the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.

Social Justice in Action Join us on Tuesday, February 16, 7:00pm for Mend the Gap! Town Hall on Bridging the Divides in Wealth Ine-quality, Health Care and Racial Disparity, hosted by Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service. Keynote speaker and moderator will be Sister Simone Campbell, Executive Di-rector of NETWORK - a national Catholic Social Justice Lobby in Washington, DC. Sister Simone is well-known as an electrifying speaker, who addresses the health needs of the underserved with passion. She is highly recognized for her work in organizing the "Nuns on the Bus" tour of nine states to raise the visibility of the needs of the poor and disabled. Additional guests from Jobs with Justice, Missouri Health Care for All and Metropolitan Congrega-tions United will also speak. Please RSVP by email to [email protected].

Relics of the True Cross and Christ's Passion will be pre-sented at Assumption Parish February 13, 2pm – 7pm in the Chapel

A unique collection of relics is being brought to the St Louis region as part of a special nationwide tour by the Apostolate for Holy Relics. The Relics of the Passion Program consists of rare items that are generally seen only in Rome or the Holy Land, and includes a piece of the True Cross, a piece of stone from the room where the Last Supper was held, a piece of the Column of Flagella-tion, a piece of the Crown of Thorns, the effigy of the Veil of Veronica (touched to the original veil), a replica of a holy nail which contains filings from the true nails, a piece of bone from St. Longinus, and a thread from the cloth used as a wrapping for the Burial Shroud.

A program which includes prayers and music commemo-rating the events of the Passion of Our Lord, Jesus Christ which lasts about 50 minutes will start at 2:00pm.

After that, additional time through 7 pm is allowed for personal veneration of the Relics. This event allows par-ticipants of all ages in any level of spirituality to deepen and grow in their faith. As we begin our Lenten journey, you are encouraged to join us in this Year of Mercy for this special opportunity that is sure to touch your heart and reconnect you with the roots of your faith.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! It was a heartwarming blessing to witness the generosity of so many people who came to our recent blood drive. Forty people came to donate. By the end of the drive, Mississippi Valley had collected 37 units of whole blood! May God bless you all for your thoughtfulness and gener-osity! You have brought Christ to the world by helping those who desperately need the blood you have donated! Please mark your calendar for our next blood drive on Sunday, May 22, 2016.

Life, Peace, and Restorative Justice

Heroic and Healing Things Are Happening

This is an Assumption Parish Waste Management Announcement: We now have a GREEN TEAM that is here to help you Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Co-coordinators Wendy Prakop and Bruce Prinster want to attend your meetings and events and help you learn how to reduce waste, purchase smarter, and manage all your waste in an environmentally friend-ly way. When they or one of their Green Team Minis-ters introduce themselves to you at your meetings, please welcome them and work with them to better care for our community and our world.

Just a few points: • In the spirit of conservation, the parish will no long-er purchase any plastic water bottles. Please bring your own reusable water bottle or use a pitcher of water and a paper cup. We are researching where these should be purchased. • Recycling: paper, plastic, aluminum, cardboard, cans should be placed in a clear plastic liner and taken to the Green Recycle Bin behind the gated trash area. Plastic liners are currently in the janitor’s closet or the kitchen or hanging on the sides of trash cans. • Food waste and Styrofoam can go in a black liner in the trash bin inside the gated area. • If you begin a meeting on our campus, please tend to waste management as part of your plan. •Pre-planning is great! Invite Wendy and Bruce to put a plan in place ahead of time, or ask for a Green Team member to attend your event.

Assumption School Spring Auction Assumption School’s Spring Auction is approaching. The date is set for April 16th! We are looking for dona-tions of all kinds! Do you have a vacation home to share, frequent a restaurant that would donate a gift card, have a connection with an entertainment destination, own your own business, enjoy employer matching gifts? We are looking for new items valued at $25 or more, gift cards of any value and even cash donations. Also, if you would like to volunteer to help with the auction during the days leading up, the setup, or work the night of the auction, we wel-come your assistance. Please contact Kirsten Mulvaney at 314.583.2233 or [email protected].

In Pope Francis' Encyclical, Laudato Si, he expressed what many have been seeing for quite some time... that the urgent challenge to protect our common home in-cludes a concern to bring the whole human family to-gether to seek a sustainable way of life. Humanity has the ability to work together in building our common home! Here I want to recognize, encourage and thank all those striving in countless ways to guarantee the pro-tection of the home which we share. Assumption Parish is striving to structure itself for mercy, compassion, out-reach, advocacy, solidarity and peace. We want to be effective expressions of the Gospel, engaging in new dialogue AND diligent action about how we are shaping the future of our planet. This is one way we are living the beautiful message of Jesus.

If you or anyone in your ministry would like to volunteer to be point person within your committee, please have them contact Wendy and Bruce.

Email Co-coordinators: Wendy Prakop, [email protected] or Bruce Prinster, [email protected]

Our Mission: To promote awareness, provide support and put into practice the 3 Rs of managing waste (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to all parishioners of Assumption Parish. Insti-tute a set-up plan of managing waste for committees within Assumption Parish and recruit parishioners to assist in this mission. Provide information as to how parishioners can lead a more sus-tainable lifestyle at home and in the com-munity.
