Carpet tiles are flooring mate-rial made from a piece of hard, stiff-backed piece of carpet (via http://www.bosarchitecture.com/glossary/glossary_c.html). Carpet tiles are ideal in high traffic areas because instead of replacing a entire room full of car-pet, you can just replace the pieces as necessary. Carpet tiles can be loose laid, or glued down to the floor. Ideally you would lay complete tiles down, but as you would with other tiled materi-als, you would cut the tiles for a more prestine fitment (Godsey, Interior De-sign Materials and Specifications vol. 2, 2013, pg. 128: installation of carpet tiles).

Moldings (baseboards, chair rails, crowns, etc.) are prefrabricted off site. These items are then cut down to size on site to and nailed into place. The major concern with installation is the protection of other finishes be-cause installation of these items occur at the end of construction, when the rooms are almost complete (Godsey, Interior Design Materials and Specifi-cations vol. 2, 2013, pg 173: Architec-tural Millwork Trims).

The moulding would be installed as the framing for the door. (Godsey, Interior Design Materials and Speci-fications vol. 2, 2013 pg 174: Doors)

Vinyl is a resilent flooring material made up vinyl of plastic, mineral aggregate, pigments, and stabilizers. Vinyl tiles are a composite material, unless stated other-wise. Because there are so many diffenet styles of vinly tiling, building program usually selectes the type used. The classification sytem fo vinly is as follows.- Class I- monolithic (through Materials)- Class II- surface decoration- Class III- printed with a decorative surface- Type A- smooth face- Type B- embossed face

This particular tile is Class III, type A.

Semi- Gloss Paint Iis a little less shiny than regular gloss paint, and also less likely to show imperfections in the coat. This is the more widely used paint and is used on the walls and accent areas, as well as the trim work in the room. Be-cause this paint is being installed in a bath-room, a primer is not needed, but would help with moiture control. Clay, or Ceramic, is the most com-mon material type for all tiling materials. Tiles are usually molded (by machine, or hand) and baked in a kiln. Monocottura tiles are baked once. Bicottura tiles have been baked twice, and are more impervi-ous. Ceramic tiles are usually used in light traffic situations, and can be used as wall finishes. Because these tiles are “handmade” the tiles have a lot of varia-tion. Only trim tiles are designed to have glazed edges. Epoxy Grout is a type of motar used as a bond coat for the tile, to the cement floor. The grout is used as the joint be-tween tiles because the tiling will move with temperature changes. The expoxy type motar is used for impervious surfaces. (Godsey, Interior Design Materials and Specifications vol. 2, 2013, pg 281)

Rick from LSI Flooring was a great guy to talk with today. He showed me their complete vinyl floor sys-tems that are designed to look like any material possi-ble. From the look of hardwood floors, to digitally printed grass, Rick showed me many stylings and colors. Rick’s major argument in the superior qualities of LSI Floors is that his floors had a lifetime warranty, the were water resistent, and you could install the tiles and panels in various ways. you could even design large logos, and shapes within his flooring when paired with a dividing strip. Rick also told me that while a lot of flooring companies are beginning to change their focuses onto different materials, LSI is thriving because of their in-novative designs.

Andrea was a pleasure to talk to this morning. She showed me the vast capabilities of Stone Peak’s porcelain tiles. The hard pressed por-celain tiles could be used used as a flooring system, surfaces such as counters, and interior and exterior walls. The exterior wall applica-tions. They have the large 5’x10’ panels used for exterior facades. Their Counter top applica-tion was severly lighter than a granite top. Andera’s advice for aspiring designers was that with today’s industy, the way to go is to use materials that look expensive, but are surprisingly cheap.

While I did not get a photo with Jim, he showed me a pressed wood plank syetem that just clicked into place. Their system was a slotted plank, which just slid together with those next to it. Aside from the installation, they had a vast array of wood. The two that stood out the most to me was the Cork flooring that was covered in vinyl so that it would have the same look as real hardwood, but the durability and quietness of cork. He also showed me a Bam-boo floor in which instead of laying the bamboo stalks, they split the planks, unrolled the stalks, and pressed the bamboo flat so that it would lay flat. Jim also told me how that recycable materials are what makes the spaces these days. Environmental design depends on the life cycle, and all of his ECO Timber product, while some were really exotic, were all recy-cable, and that they even used the scraps of other woods, pressed them together and made planks out of that as well.

Butaro Hospital District The Butaro Hospital district, in Rwanda was a unique project from various reasons. The design of the project revolutionized theway hospitals were built in Africa, and also helped cut mortality rates during childbirth. Since 2007 the mortality rate of children had decreased by 65%, and the maternal rate by 50%. To cut the spread of disease, all hallways were moved to the exterior of the patient spaces, rather than in the middle. For the construction of this project, 4000 local Butaro men and women were hired in the process. The hospital was built completly by hand, at 2/3 the cost and in 2/3 the time. Because most of the materials used were local, including the volcanic rock used for the facade, the structure is completly sustainable. Other sustainabilty factors are the natural cross ventilation and UV light that help clean the air. On the same site as the hospital, doctor’s hous-ing was constucted. In this project an additional 900 local people were hired for construction. 275 of these people have been trained with a skill, such as weilding, or masonry like Kankwanzi who is a woman and now master mason in Butaro. Ms. Bainbridge most resonating comment was “you cannot solve health issues with just a building, you need clinics, infrastructure, and the community.”
