  • WhatIsYourSign?Beforestartingtobuildoursigns,wewereaskedtocreateacollageofoursigns.Firstassignmentofthesemesterstartswithbrainstorming.

    Afterpicking3adjectivesthatfitsourpersonalitywhichexplainusin3wordswewereheadedtosearchofthesigns,clipartsandanythingthatwouldleadustocreatethecollage.Soonwewillstartbuildingtheactualsign. MuratYavuz

    Week1

  • SignISelectedadjectiveswere:

    -Dominant-Oriental-Adventurous

    Foamboardwasthematerialusedtocreatethesigns.Moreover,transparentcoloredsheetswereusedinbetweentheboardstobringsomecolorstothesign.

  • ReflectionsFromSignI:-Createanoutlineofthesignandplaceitonthematerialyouwanttoworkon,makesureitlookslikeyouimagine.

    - Makesureyouhaveenoughmaterialandtoolstocreatewhat'sinyourmind.

    - Carvingthefoamboardwashardandtooklotsoftime,makesureyouarepreparedforthat.

  • SignIIAfterworkingwiththefoamboard,IthoughtIwasfamiliarwithitanddecidetoworkonitagain.Also,aftertheexperienceIhadfromthefirstsign,Idecidedtocut/pastetheboardinsteadofcarvingit.ItworkedbetterandIhadneaterlookingsign.Ialsodidn'thavetospendasmanyhoursasthefirstonebecauseIwaspreparedbeforestarting.ForthesecondsignIdecidedtousethesamematerialsbutIchangetheshapeofthesign.

  • ReflectionsofSignIIEventhoughIamfamiliarworkingwiththefoamboard,mycuttingswerenotthatprecise.AlsoIhadsomecalculationsmistakes.Someofthetrianglesweren'tatthesizetheyweresupposetobesowhenIgluethemtogethertherewassomeemptyspacesinbetweenthetriangles.

  • AJourneyofDiscoverytoLocalPlacesofWonderForthisprojectwetookajourneytotheplacesthatwehaven'tbeenbefore.Ourintentionwastodiscoverthefeelingsevoked.

    WedecidedtovisitFortMasonandTheWaveOrgan.Itwasinterestingtovisitlandmarkswithapurposeoflookingforthefeelings.Alsobecause itwasmyfirsttimeinbothplacesthefeelingIhadexperiencedwerestrong.

    MakeaWall,MakeaWindow,EvokeWonderisthe4th projectofthesemester.Wearenowbeginningtobuildmodels.Weareusingchipboardtocreatethefirstiterationofthewall.

    Week4

    Reflections:Eventhough Ilikethesecondwall(ontheright)andthought itwouldevokewonder,myclassmatesandour instructorthinksthefirstwall(on theleft)hasmoreofanarchitecturalvalue.Ihavetoapplythatvaluetomynextiterationwhileevokingwonder.

  • WallModelSecondIteration

    Afterdiscoveringthematerialsandthetechniquesofbuildingwallmodelsnowweareassignedtotakeanotherstepandthickenourmodels.

    Reflections:Mynewiterationofthewallhasagreaterarchitecturalvalue.Howeveritistooliteraltocreatethefeelingofwonder.

  • ThirdIterationoftheWallThemaingoaloftheprojectistocreateaspaceforanadulttolaydownorsitandevokethefeelingofwonder.Thereforefocusingonthewindowandseatinghelpsmoretoaccomplishourintention!

    Week5

    Reflections:Mynewdesign ismoresuccessfuloncreatingwonderandrevealingfeelings.Itsalsogettingabstractanditsgood tothinkandbuildoutsideofthebox.

  • Narrative:1st DraftMydesignrepresentstheremainderstructurefromadisasterlikeoccasion.

    Lookingthroughalinedupriblikestructuregivesthefeelingofbeingprotected.Especiallywhentherhombusesseemliketheyaregoingtofallinanysecond.Someoftherhombuspanelsarealmostslightingdownandtherhombusesstuffedonthegroundcompletestheconceptofastructurethatgivesanunsecurespace.

    Afirsttimeviewerwouldexperiencethefear,andwouldtrytogetclosertotheribssincetheframesareholdingtherhombuses.Whentheyturnaroundtherhombuspanelsonthefloormayscarethemmore,butwhentheyseethattheyarepurposelylocated,theyfeelrescued.

    Myaudiencewouldfindtheseatinginterestingiftheyarebraveenoughtogetcloserandtryit.Alsoedgesoftherhombusesonthefloorwillleadthemtogetclosertotheribs.

    Week6

    Onthisiterationofthewallwearenowrequired tobuild floors,walls,ceilingandaroof.Nowthatwehaveenough experiencesofmaterials,toolsandbuildingmodelsallofusintheclassareproceeding tomorecomplexmodels.

    Thegeometryofmylastiterationinspiredmetobuildageodesicdomeandbybreakingpieceson thedome Itriedtoachievethesenseofwonderandcreateapavilionlikedesign.

  • Narrative2nd DraftMydesignedevolvedintoageometricspace,butitstillrepresentsamemorialofadisaster.

    Geodesicdomeamazesthevisitorsandthefracturedopeningcreatesthefeelingofwonderespeciallywhenlookingfrominsidevisitorswillfeellikeanearthquaketoreapartthegeodesicdome.

    Theseatingarenotwelcomingneithercomfortable.Theyaredesignedandlocatedpurposelytoincreasethefeelingsofdisastrousenvironment.

    Themainentrancehasalargeropeningsbutvisitorscanenterandexitthestructurefromanyopening.Someoftheopeningsaresmallersoifvisitorswanttousethosetheyhavetobendandcrawl.

    Mydesignserveasarestspacewherevisitorscanreadandliedown.

    Thisisthefirstiterationofmydesign thathasASpatialJourneyLeadingtoaPlaceofWonder.Iwashavinghardtimecreatingajourney. Idiscoveredthatitishardertocreateajourneyonadesign likedome.Byusing thewoodensticksandpolyster paperItiredtocreateajourney,adesign thatleadsvisitorstohaveajourney.

    Reflections:

    Makesurethatyouhavethelistofeventsandorganizedviewsofthedesign.

  • ASpatialJourneyLeadingtoaPlaceofWonderAfterseeingsuccessfuljourneysonmyclassmatesmodelsnowIhavecreatedamodelthatevokeswonderandalsohasapathandjourney.Formthispoint itwaseasierformetoproceedtonextdesignandaccomplishtherequirements.

    Reflections:Iwasusingdifferentmaterialsandtheygeneratedifferent textures.NowIhaveanotherchallenges,suchas providing unityandcreatingcomplexitywithoutmakingamess.

    OnthelastiterationIamfinallyabletoevokethefeelingofwonderandhaveajourney thatleadsthevisitorstowalkaround thestructure.AlsonowIhaveexperienceonworkingwithdifferentmaterial,creatingroughdrafts,sketchingnextiterationsandexposethepurposeofadesign reclaimed.

    Eventhough itsnicetogainskillsandexperiencesonbuildingmodels,biggestachievementofthisprojectwastodesign toevokefeelingsandleadtoajourney.
