Icebreaker  Exercise:  Assignment  1  Repetition  •  Order  •  Design  Thinking  &  Making

 My  focuses  were

Descending  and  ascending  ,foreground  and  background

Visible  patterns    But,  Still  fixated  on  basic  triangular  shapes.

After  being  given  our  first  couple  assignments,  I  was  anxious  to  start  creating  new  material.  I  felt  pretty  creative  at  the  time.  All  the  instructions  were  pretty  straight  forward.

Fresh  out  of  sculpture  class  ,  I  was  fixated  in  making  pieces  mostly  out  of  one  type  of  material.  At  the  moment,  using  wax  was  my  preference.  Wax  was  very  interesting  to  me.  I  wanted  to  see  how  far  I  can  take  it  with  my  designs.  Since  wax  can  be  melted,  carved  and  shaped  in  almost  any  way  possible.  This  material  would  be  perfect  to  get  awesome  effects.

 My  goals  were

Create  something  that  has  tension  and  release.    Different  scales  of  similar  shapes    A  focal  point  to  show  tension    Easily  recognizable        Jerry  proof

I  focused  on  replicating  the  pressure  point  where  tension  was  seen  from  my  last  iteration  and  scaling  it  up  a  couple  sizes.

I  made  a  model  that  was  twice  the  size  of  the  original  and  one  that  was  four  times  the  size.

I  started  using  a  thinner  cardboard  instead  of  the  foam  board  to  give  these  models  a  much  cleaner  look.

My  Goals    Create  a  frame  expression  of  my  previous  iteration.    To  help  the  observer  better  understand  the  structure  of  the  design.

With  the  open  space,  now  the  observer  can  create  and  fill  the  openings  with  his/her  own  creativity.

They  can  now  imagine  the  different  possibilities  that  can  fill  the  frame.

An  open  space  means  an  open  door  to  create  and  add  anything  that  is  desired.

Messed  around  with  all  my  kit  of  parts  and  started  making  weird  shapes.

These  were  just  some  exercises  to  help  out  my  creativity.

I  worked  with  different  scales  of  shapes,  occupying  space,  hierarchy,  tension  and  release,  and  repetition.

This  classic  Italian  renaissance  bank  building  was  designed  by  Willis  Polk  in  1908.

The  marquee  on  the  side  of  the  entrance  is  made  of  pressed  copper  which  connects  to  the  entrance  of  the  first  national  bank.

There  are  two  figures,  one  on  each  side  of  the  marquee  that  stand  and  serve  as  supports.  Cornucopias  are  placed  at  their  feet.  A  nude  male  and  female  figure  recline  on  either  side  of  a  medallion  that  is  repeated  on  both  sides  of  the  marquee.  Fruit,  leaves,  wheat,  and  a  griffin  are  used  as  decorations.

The  medallion  reads  Systematic  Saving  is  the  Key  to  Success.    The  marquee  is  the  work  of  fine  arts  teacher  Emily  Michals  and  was

done  in  1924.

I make a project and I panic. Which is good, it can be a method. First, panic. Second

conquer panic by working. Third, find ways to solve your doubts.
