Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) A Reminder: Reconstruction of the St. Joseph Church parking lot

and handicap entrance continues. Until further notice, scheduled week-

day Masses are re-located to Most Holy Trinity Church. While weekend

Masses will continue at Saint Joseph, some parishioners may want to

attend Mass at one of our other church locations while work is in pro-

gress. (2) There is no set procedure for distributing the Eucharist to

extraordinary ministers bringing Holy Communion to the homebound and sick.

Recently, I surveyed several pastors to ask what is done in other parishes. For the time

being, I am requiring that ministers bring the empty pix (metal container) to the sacristy

before Mass begins. During Mass, after the distribution of Holy Communion, the priest

will fill each pix with the required number of consecrated hosts, and then call forward

the ministers. This practice serves as a visible reminder for the assembly to pray for the

sick; it also alerts anyone who knows someone unable to attend Mass to inform us so

we can assign someone to bring them Communion. That we do this during Mass forges

a bond between the sick or housebound to the Liturgy just celebrated. Because many of

the pix are identical in design, each minister should mark his/hers in some visible way.

On a small piece of masking tape affixed to the inside cover, indicate “how many” if

more than one consecrated host is needed. The minister must bring the Eucharist directly

to the intended person(s) immediately after Mass. All are reminded that the bishop him-

self appoints all ministers after a recommendation by the pastoral council and the pastor,

followed by a state police background check. (3) This notice comes from the diocesan

Office of Safe Environment, the second in a series: Parent Involvement in Parish

Programs: Parents are encouraged to be a part of any and all services and programs in

which their children are involved in the Diocese of Portland. Parents have an open invi-

tation to observe programs and activities in which their children are involved. However,

parents who desire to participate in or have continuous, ongoing contact with their

child’s programs in the Church will be required to complete the volunteer application

process and participate in the Virtus Protecting God’s Children training. Thank you for

your cooperation. (4) Catholic Education Board Membership: On June 30, several

members of the Good Shepherd Catholic Education Board will conclude two full terms of service, and must be replaced. This Board is established by the pastor of Good Shep-

herd Parish as a consultative body to assist him and the principal in the governance of

Saint James School -- policy formation and administration -- in cooperation with the

Office of Maine Catholic Schools, the State of Maine Department of Education, and in

accord with the Board of Education of the Diocese of Portland. Members are appointed

by the pastor, and must be Catholics in good standing. They may have children in

St. James School or be non-parents interested in fostering the mission of the school.

Parishioners interested in serving on this board should contact the principal of St. James

School, Nancy Naimey. (5) Jubilee Year of Mercy (April) - Forgive Offenses and

Bear Wrongs Patiently - This week’s suggestion: Work at being less critical. Try to find

positive solutions to problems or challenges. (6) Thank You of the Week: To parish-

ioners who washed the many containers (“oil stocks” and “ambries”) that preserve the

holy oils for our parish – about 40 containers total – preparing the containers for the

fresh oils blessed by Bishop Deeley during Holy Week. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 6 - Msgr. Tonne: A politician who had changed his views rather radically was congratulated by a colleague who said, “I’m glad you’ve seen the light.” “I didn’t see the light,” came the terse reply. “I felt the heat.”
