Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Last Sunday morning, I was happy to participate in the Mass during which Bishop Deeley ordained our parishioner, Alex Boucher, to the Order of Deacons. Our three deacons also were present; Deacon Bob Parenteau proclaimed the Gospel reading while Deacon Kevin Jacques vested Deacon Boucher with a stole and dalmatic for the first time. Many

family members and friends participated joyfully, and I recognized a number of parish-ioners in the congregation. We pray the Lord to call Alex to priesthood next year. (2) I invite parishioners to attend either of the two final gatherings for our parish capital campaign, Shepherds of Hope: this Monday, June 10, at St. Philip Church and Tuesday, June 11, at Most Holy Trinity Church. Both gatherings begin at 7:00 pm. Participants will receive a packet of information to take home and to discern how they can participate. As we continue our campaign, we believe as the Lord taught us that all things are possible through prayer. Kindly use the prayer cards distributed last weekend (and still available near church doors). Offer this prayer daily for the success of our campaign. If you wish to offer additional prayers to become a “Prayer Champion” for the campaign, contact the parish office and our campaign director will give you specific dates of campaign activities when additional prayers would truly help. Prayer is an important component of our campaign. When each of you is asked to consider your contribution to the campaign, you will be asked to take it to prayer and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you. In this way, everything we do will be through our relationship with the Lord for the betterment of His Kingdom here in our parish. Thank you. (3) Summer Mass Schedule: Effective this coming Wednesday, June 12, and throughout the St. James School summer recess, the 8:30 am Wednesday Mass at St. James will give way to an 8:00 am Wednesday Mass at St. Margaret in Old Orchard Beach. Two Sun-days from now, June 23, we will add a Sunday morning 9:30 am Mass at St. Brendan in Biddeford Pool. That same Sunday, the two Sunday Masses at St. Margaret will be celebrated at 8:00 am and 9:30 am instead of 8:30 and 10:30 to avoid summertime traffic later in the morning. (4) Time to register! Maine couples celebrating milestone anniversaries are invited to receive a special blessing from Bishop Deeley at the annual statewide Silver & Gold Anniversary Mass on Saturday, June 22, 4 pm, at St. Joseph Church. All are invited to attend the Mass with a special invitation to those celebrating milestone anniversaries, such as their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 35th, 40th, 50th, 60th or be-yond. A reception with light refreshments will follow the Mass in the church hall. Learn more and register by June 15 at www.portlanddiocese.org/olff/silver-gold-mass, or con-tact Hannah Gonneville at (207) 321-7885 or [email protected]. (5) Coming Up Soon: Vacation Bible School June 24-28 at the Most Holy Trinity location. More information is printed in this bulletin. Please register soon! (6) The annual Knights of Columbus’ sponsored baby bottle drive ends next weekend. What began on Mother’s Day with the distribution of baby bottles concludes this Sunday on Father’s Day. Returning those bottles with your donations enclosed in honor of mothers and fathers will help to support pregnancy centers: ABBA in Portland and ALPHA in Sanford. (7) This year’s Clergy Institute (May 20-23) focused on the reorganization of parishes in the Archdiocese of Quebec. A very interesting presentation by the Gerald Cardinal Lacroix, Archbishop of Quebec, and a member of his staff, Marie Chretien, gave us an opportunity to reflect on our own experience here in Maine. An annual feature of the institute is celebrating priest jubilarians with a Mass and banquet. The honorees this year: Fr. Stephen Mulkern (70 years); Bishop Joseph Gerry, OSB (65 years); Fr. Hilary Cameron, Fr. Stephen Concannon and Fr. Gerald Levesque (55 years); Fr. Philip Cyr and Fr. Constanzo Piselli (50 years); Fr. Thomas Murphy (40 years) and Fr. Benedict Faneye, OP (25 years). (8) Thank You of the Week: To parishioners who washed the many containers (“oil stocks” and “ambries”) that pre-serve the holy oils for the churches in our parish, preparing the containers and filling them with the fresh oils blessed by Bishop Deeley at the Chrism Mass during Holy Week. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Volume 2 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne: A Methodist minister friend of mine, the Rev. John Daly, told me this story: A Methodist congrega-tion was 98 years old, but had made practically no change in its long history. As their centennial was coming up in two years, they held a meeting to make plans but the group voted against having any celebration, saying: “We have never had a centennial before.”
