St. Matthew Church Limerick

TODAY IS THE SIXTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME. THE READ-INGS BEGIN ON PAGE 58 OF THE MISSALETTE. Pastor’s Pondering

Thy will be done… Four words that can make all the difference in our lives. Four words which we say every time we pray The Lords Prayer. Words which we probably do not give much thought but words that offer us more freedom and peace than we have ever known. This simple prayer acknowledges that there is indeed someone who knows more than us, who has the wide view of time and space, whose default desire is for our wellbeing. Four words that make a difference in our lives, but as usual, are easier said than done. Doing the will of God requires a threefold commitment. First, we must know what the will of God is. Then once we know what God wants us to do, we must want to do it. Lastly, we must do what it is that God wants us to do. Again, all this sounds so simple but, simple or not we have a tough time making this com-mitement. How often do we pray, say all that we need to say, end with a great Amen and then move on to the next thing? We often for-get that prayer is meant to be a conversation. A conversation is talking but it is also listening. Listening to the tiny voice of God, listening during the cacophony that is our norm, listening for God to reveal his plan for us. Perhaps God is revealing his will to us through another person, through a situation, through a miracle. Perhaps we miss these because there is so much competition for our attention. So, the first step in doing the will of God is listening and paying attention. It requires some quiet time, some time of reflec-tion and meditation, some time of quiet uninterrupted conversa-tion with God. For those seeking the will of God, for those seek-ing to be holy, this is not a luxury but is instead a necessity. Even after we have discovered what it is that God wants us to do, what God’s will is, we may have our own plans. We may think we know better; we may just want to do something else. Very rarely does God’s will for us involve what is easy or what is comfortable. Instead what God will ask of us will most likely involve sacrifice. We will have to give up something we enjoy, we may have to avoid people we enjoy, we may have to change our lives completely. God’s desire for us is to be extraordinary means we will often need to swim against the tide of popular opinion. In short in will be difficult to do what God asks. Having had a conversation with God to discover what he wants us to do, our next conversation may very well be an expla-nation of why we would rather do something else. We will need to once again have an honest conversation with God so that we can come to know why it is good for us to do what God asks. The more we know about God’s desire for our wellbeing, the more we know the length and breadth and depth of God’s love for us the more we will want to do what God asks. When God is our trusted confidant and friend, we are not afraid to say yes to God’s will. Finally, and this seems obvious, once we know the will of God, once we have committed ourselves to doing the will of God, we need to do it. By this point we should be disposed to doing what it is that God asks of us. But this is not always the case. Go-ing against the culture, having to stand for truth when others are spouting opinion, being humble, generous, patient, merciful, and loving in a culture that at times is barely civil is going to be diffi-cult. Perhaps this is why Jesus often started his teaching with the words, be not afraid. He knew that if we spoke to God on a regu-lar basis, if we discerned that what God is asking is what makes us holy and happy, if we joyfully and generously do what God is asking then we have nothing to fear and much to gain.

~Fr. Bill

IN CONNECTION WITH THE PROGRAM “PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN”

In the interest of children’s safety, we ask that children not be allowed to leave Mass to use the restrooms downstairs, unless they are accom-panied by an adult. Because we are a public building, doors are required to be unlocked, allowing entrance to all.
