Curriculum Changes Last week the Premier announced that the NSW school curriculum will be overhauled to improve standards, with changes starng in 2021 and all years learning the new curriculum by 2024. Changes include: Stronger foundaons in literacy & numeracy with new English & Maths syllabuses for Kindergarten to Year 2 by 2022; More me for teaching essenal knowledge and skills in each subject by 2022. Our teachers are looking forward to parcipang in professional learning about the impact this will have on our day-to-day teaching. Peer Support Leadership Training Days This Thursday & Friday, all Year 6 students will be involved in Peer Support Leadership Training Days to foster leadership skills and prepare students for their important role in the Peer Support Program. On these days, the students will be having different break mes to the rest of the school and we are planning to have a special lunch at the park/oval opposite the school on Friday (hot chips on bread). Students are invited to wear muſti clothes both days. Students are to wear a t-shirt, shorts or pants that are easy to complete acvies in and closed in shoes. Students are to wear their school hat on both days. Students are asked to bring Lunch, Recess and water on Thursday and Recess and water Friday. Semester 1 Reports These reports are being finalised this week and will be printed and sent home in the first week of Term 3. You will noce a few changes, just for this report, to take into account these unprecedented mes and their impact on teaching and student learning. As you can appreciate, having an extensive period for online learning made it difficult to truly gauge exactly how much work some students were compleng. You will see one comment for English, one for Mathemacs and a general comment covering all other Key learning Areas. No grades will be allocated to students for Semester 1, however, student effort will be recognised. Skate Park Before School Some parents have come up with the great idea of using Appin’s new skate park as a reward for geng ready for school on me and as an alternave to television or devices on school mornings. It’s great to see rosy cheeks on students who may have had a quick scoot around the park on the way to school. Unfortunately, some of our older students, who are not accompanied by a parent in the mornings are vising the skate park on their way to school and then coming late to school. We applaud students geng physical exercise and fresh air but not at the expense of their learning. We thank you in ancipaon of speaking with your older child who may be doing this or thinking of doing this. Parent Guides The Gonski Instute has just released some guides for parents about supporng your child and their educaon. Through song, dance, story, language and the demonstration of traditional tools and artifacts, Gwenda invites students to learn and engage with her living culture. All students from K-6 will have the opportunity to attend the presentation. Gwenda Stanley is a dancer, educator and cultural ambassador. Since 2006 Gwenda has been touring nationally with Young Australia Workshop and has shared her understanding and passion for her culture with over 10,000 school students each year.We strongly encourage all students to attend the Gwenda Stanley Performance at school on Thursday, 30th July 2020.
