Annual Holiday Bazaar Saturday, November 9th

9 a.m. — 1 p.m.

Two months from now is the senior centers’ biggest fundraiser of the year—the Annual Holiday Bazaar. Once again, we will be having some fantastic raffle items, beautiful and unique homemade craft items, an ever tempting delicious array of baked goods and the “you never know what you will find”, white elephant sale. Lunch items will be available to purchase. Entrance into the bazaar is free, and the raffle items will be drawn at 12:45 p.m. on the 9th. As we prepare for the bazaar, remember we need everyone’s help! You don’t need to bake the day of the event, bake a few days prior, and bring your items into the senior center. We can freeze them and pull them out for the sale. Once again, we will be baking kolache , however this year, we will be baking on Thursday after-noon at 12:30pm. Please pre-register so we know how many bakers we will have. The white elephant sale is always a big hit and items can be brought in at any time. Donations can be anything that is brand new or “gently used”. Please no torn or broken items. Remember to bring in things that you, yourself, would like to purchase! Raffle items are also a “big draw” to the bazaar. If you have a new larger item you would like to donate, please see Sandy. We have always had wonderful raffle items; let’s keep the tradition going! And of course, we are always looking for new and unique items to sell on the craft table. Center members will, once again, be able to purchase an eight foot table to sell their own homemade craft items for $15. These tables will be reserved on a “first come first served” basis so please see Sandy if you are interested in rent-ing one. (You will be able to set up your table Thursday afternoon or Saturday morning.) Last year the center made a profit of $3,900.00! The monies earned are used to help supplement equipment, parties and events at the senior center. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped, and who will be helping, in this years’ fundraiser!

Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 4:00pm 2019 Membership Fees July thru Dec ......... $8.00 Participant Age: 55 years and older History The seniors living in the south shore area had their wishes and prayers answered when the South Milwaukee Senior Center was opened and dedicated in February of 1982. The Senior Center, formerly Parkway Elementary School, has served the needs of many during the past 37 years. It has given older adults diversion, providing educational, cultural, physical, social and recreational programs. The Senior Center was started with the hard work of Mary Staffold, who initially had a group called “The Golden Agers”. That group met in the basement of the South Milwaukee Library. With the help of the Community Block Grants, the Senior Center became a reality for her and others. She was the director from 1982 to August 1984. Theresa Bellone was the director from 1984 to May of 1990. The current director since June of 1990 is Sandra Quinlan. She continues the legacy of hard work and dedication to the seniors of the community. In May of 1994, the Senior Center name was changed to the Chester W. Grobschmidt Senior Center. It was Mayor Grobschmidt, and City Administrator Norb Theine, who eagerly filled out the federal and state grant application forms the Friday after Thanksgiving in 1979. After Mayor Grobschmidt retired, it appeared only appropriate to name the Center after him. The Center is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m.

Fitness The center offers a fitness center open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - noon. The facility has up-to-date exercise equipment that is designed for the needs of older adults. Senior Meal Site The center offers a Senior Meal Site. The Senior Meal Site opens at 9:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. A suggested donation of $3.00 per meal helps the Senior Meal Program with the cost of the meal. Please note: Everyone needs a diners card. Register at the dining site between 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Proof of age (60 years or older) and residency is required to register. Once registered, you may use your diners card to make a reservation at any of the Milwaukee County Senior Meal Dining Sites. Reserve at least one day in advance before 11:00 a.m. by phone, 768-5722, or at the dining site.

Blood Pressure Screenings Janice, a center member and retired nurse, will be at the senior center taking blood pressures from 10:15-11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, September 17th. This is a free service that the senior center offers. She will be taking them in the area near the pool tables.

Center ClosingsThe senior center and dining site will be closed on the following dates: **Monday, September 2—Labor Day **Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday October 2nd, 3rd and 4th—stripping and waxing the floors **Friday, November 8th—Bazaar Set up **Thursday and Friday November 28th & 29th—Thanksgiving Holiday **Friday afternoon December 13th—Winter Wonderland Party set up. All afternoon programs/activities cancelled.

Stockbox Program Tuesday, September 24th, 2019

10:30 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. The senior center is a distribution site for the Stock Box Program. The food distribution this month will take place on Tuesday, September 24th from 10:30-11:00 a.m. The stock boxes will be given out in the back parking lot with paperwork being filled out in the large hall area. The Stock Box Program is run by Hunger Task Force, and does have some eligibility guidelines. Participants need to live in Wisconsin, be at least 60 years of age, and have a monthly income that is less than, or equal to the following: Household Size 60 years of age 1 $1,354 2 $1,832 3 $2,311 For more information about this program, please talk with Sandy, read the brochures available at the senior center, or call 211. FREE Memory Screen

Monday, Sept. 16 from 9 –3 at the So. Milw. / St. Francis Health Dept.

Are you concerned about your memory? It is important, as we get older, to recognize the

changes we may experience, especially in rela-tion to our memory. A cognitive screen/

memory screen is a wellness tool that helps identify possible changes in memory and cog-

nition. This is not a diagnostic tool, but a screen that can provide early detection for dementia, as well as a baseline for future

screenings. The memory screen process is very simple in which you will be asked to

answer some questions and complete a task. The screen takes about 15-30 minutes. Early detection is important to be proactive in plan-

ning for the future and because early treatment, if needed, is more effective.

The memory screens will be provided by Candice LeGros, Dementia Care Specialist, Milwaukee County Department on Aging.

Learn how your feet change as the years pass. At-tend this presentation and get information on caring for your feet and nails. Come with questions and leave with answers! 6 Classes/Leagues

Fall Leagues It’s time to sign up for the fall/winter leagues! Pre-registration is required for all of the following leagues. Most leagues will run until April or May.

Cribbage: An organizational meeting for this co-ed league will be held on Thursday, Sep-tember 5th at 12:30pm. Rules will be discussed, teams will be drawn and money will be col-

lected—$1 for each week played. League play will begin on September 12th.

Dartball: An organizational meet-ing for this co-ed league will be held on Friday, September 6th at 12:30pm. Team names will be decided and rules discussed. League play will begin on September 13th.

8-Ball League: An organization-al meeting for this co-ed league will be held on Tuesday, October 8th at 12:30pm. League rules will be discussed. League play will begin on Tues. Oct. 22nd.

Shuffleboard: An organiza-tional meeting for this co-ed league will be held on Wednesday, September 4th at 12:30pm. League play will be begin on Sept. 11th.

Wii: At time of print, it was not yet determined the exact days and start date of this league. Please check the September newsletter for further updates.

Although many of the classes are year round, some take off the summer and begin again in September. The following is a list

of those classes.

Classes Painting Class: Thursday afternoons from 1:00-3:00pm. Class is free, but participants need to purchase their supplies and projects. The start date is Thursday, September 5th. Open Art Class: Wednesday afternoons from 1:00-3:00pm——This class was formerly the MATC Art Class. Individuals are encouraged to bring in their projects and create their pieces with the camara-derie of their fellow peers. Pre-registration is not required. Please, no oils can be used. The start date is Wednesday, September 4th. Calligraphy Class: Friday afternoons from 1:00-3:00pm. Class is free, but participants need to purchase a set of calligraphy pens from the instructor. The pens cost approximately $8.00. The start date is Friday, September 6th.

Join the Fun!

Floral Design Class: Tuesday, September 17th.

Enjoy an afternoon creating a beautiful project for your home. This particular class will focus on

autumn, which is right around the corner. Learn how to make a lighted fall arrangement with a

scarecrow. Everything you need to make this pro-ject will be provided. Pre-registration and class fee

of $30 is due by Tuesday, September 10th. The sign up sheet is located by the calendar near the

main entrance. The class will be held from 1:00-3:00pm.

Trips/Parties 7

Enjoy a day at Arlington Race Course on Thursday, September 19th. We will be boarding the bus at 9:45am and returning to the center at approximately 7:30pm. Post time is at 1:25pm and the races should be over at around 5:30pm. The cost of this trip will be $39. This price includes motor coach transportation, reserved box seat, and horse racing program. Lunch will be on your own at the race track. Places to eat include Cobey’s Food Court, Cowboy Grille, Terrace Café, Terrace Corners, and Mr. D’s Sports Bar. Although people are welcome to bring coolers onto the bus for the trip down or back, coolers are not allowed into the box seats. People can bring a non-alcoholic beverage into the park, but it must be factory sealed and must be an aluminum can or plastic bottle—no glass is allowed into the park. Tickets are presently on sale. The last day to purchase tickets will be Wednesday, September 4th.

50’s & 60’s Sock Hop Saturday, September 28th

Mark your calendars now for a day to remember!! We will be having a dance on Saturday, September 28th from 11:30am-3:30pm. Participants will be dancing to the music of Remember When and dining on deli-cious food from Pulaski Inn. There will also be a special appearance by Elvis himself!! In preparation for this exciting new themed party, I am asking people to bring in a picture of themselves from the 50’s and/or 60’s. The goal is to have them on display on the large bulletin board for the party. With keeping the theme of the 50’s & 60’s, lunch will consist of the following items: Homemade meatloaf with mushroom gravy, country crisp chicken, made from scratch macaroni & cheese, peas & carrots, three bean salad, pickles & olives, rolls & butter, decaf coffee and angel food cake filled with strawberries & cream dusted with powder sugar. Tickets are presently on sale. Center members are able to purchase a total of four tick-ets, however, everyone attending needs to be senior center members. The last day to purchase tickets will be Friday, September 13th. The cost of each ticket will be $18. Whether you want to wear the fashions of the 50’s or sport the fashions of the 60’s, all party goers are encouraged to dress in the style of either era——could be a letter on your shirt like Laverne and Shirley or a bright paisley shirt!

Friendly Reminder The opportunity to join the senior center is open to all people within Milwaukee County and also the surrounding counties. Participants need to be the age of 55, or their partner/spouse needs to be 55 years of age. The $8 per person membership fee allows you to participate in all of the programs/activities that the senior center has to offer and to enjoy free coffee and donuts in the morning! The only programs offered that you do not need to be a center member are as followed: Daily Nutrition Pro-gram and the AARP Safety Driving Course.

Dining Site/Exercise Equipment 10 The Senior Dining Site has its own telephone. When reserving a lunch you should call: 768-5722. If no one is able to answer the phone, your message will go directly into voice mail. There are a few rules that need to be followed when telephoning in and reserving your lunch:

· People who want to have their meal, the following day, need to call the nutrition site by 11:15 a.m., the previous day

· People who are going out of town for a few days, and know the day they will be back, can telephone in their reservation before they leave, and eat at the center on the day they return to town.

· People need to leave their name, choice of entrée A or B (if offered), choice of chocolate or 1% milk, choice of diabetic or regular dessert (if offered), and the day they wish to eat at the center on the voice mail. The voice mail will be activated if the line is busy, or if the calls have been made after 11:30 a.m.

Exercise Equipment Utilize the fitness center and increase your strength and flexibility! The exercise equipment is available Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. All par-ticipants will need to have a Doctor’s Release Form

on file. Forms are available in the fitness area. Once your Doctor’s Release Form is received, you will need to attend a mandatory orientation. The orienta-

tion for the month of September will be held on Tuesday, September 10th at 10:15 a.m. At the orientation,

center guidelines will be disbursed, and a waiver of liability will

be signed.
