O Day of Peace that Dimly Shines O day of peace that dimly shines through all our hopes and prayers and dreams, guide us to justice, truth, and love, delivered from our selfish schemes. May swords of hate fall from our hands, our hearts from envy find release, till by God's grace our warring world shall see Christ's promised reign of peace. Then shall the wolf dwell with the lamb, nor shall the fierce devour the small; as beasts and cattle calmly graze, a little child shall lead them all. Then enemies shall learn to love, all creatures find their true accord; the hope of peace shall be fulfilled, for all the earth shall know the Lord.

Joy to the World

Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns! Let all their songs employ; while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love.

I: Darkness to Light Isaiah 9:2, 6, 7

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the gov-ernment will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Of the increase of his govern-ment and of peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to up-hold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

II: The Branch of Jesse Isaiah 2:3a, 4

and many peoples shall come, and say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may

walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plow-shares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

III: Gabriel Visits Mary Luke 1:26-35, 38

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

And Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I have no husband?” And the angel said to her,

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel de-parted from her.

IV: Jesus’ Birth; the Shepherds Luke 2:1-16

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus

that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first

enrollment, when Quirin′i-us was governor of Syria. And

all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph

also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to

Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,

because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be

enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And

while they were there, the time came for her to be deliv-

ered. And she gave birth to her first-born son and

wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a man-

ger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

And in that region there were shepherds out in the field,

keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of

the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord

shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And

the angel said to them, “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring

you good news of a great joy which will come to all the

people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a

Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for

you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and

lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel

a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!”

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethle-hem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

V: The Magi Matthew 2:1-11

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the

days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East

came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been

born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the

East, and have come to worship him.” When Herod the

king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with

him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of

the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to

be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is

written by the prophet:

‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.’”

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascer-tained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

VI: In the beginning… John 1:1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with

God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning

with God; all things were made through him, and without

him was not anything made that was made. In him was

life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in

the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all

might believe through him. He was not the light, but came

to bear witness to the light.

The true light that enlightens every man was coming into

the world. He was in the world, and the world was made

through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his

own home, and his own people received him not. But to

all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave

power to become children of God; who were born, not of

blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but

of God.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of

grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the

only Son from the Father.
