The barcode used on the front cover of this Clash Magazine has been strategically placed with both the issue number on the side of the barcode and also the price at the bottom of the barcode with a price of £4.80. Furthermore the barcode has clearly been strategically placed and it clearly looks like a lot of thought has gone into where the barcode should be placed. Due the placement of the barcode it really shows the simplicity of the design as it doesn’t stand out to the reader which means it will not distract the reader from looking at the main design of the front cover.

The masthead of this magazine is clearly very bold and bright which fits In with the other colours on this magazine cover, the masthead will stand out to the reader which is the main focus of the masthead. This bold and bright lettering that has been used adds a very eye catching look to the magazine, however I thank that the bright colours that are also used throughout the front cover will also help to make the magazine stand out and this will be very appealing compared some magazines within the same genre. The font used on the cover is very minimalistic but effective; the font is also used for some of the smaller cover lines. However the main cover line used on the cover is very punctual and eye catchy which keeps within the overall; design of the front cover. Also Clash is known for always having a white masthead and also the cover line is usually a bright bold white as well, this again adds a great effect on the audience as it is very appealing and it also helps to produces a unique front cover.

The main colour palette used throughout the magazine cover is very bright colours; this will appeal to many audiences as bright colours will attract people to read the magazine. The colours used are all secondary colours which show that the magazine has enticed an alternative approach which may show that the audience that this magazine is focusing on is indie/alternative music. The colour palette as well really compliments the close up of the photography shot because if the colours were different then it would affect the style of the magazine that obviously Clash are keen to showcase. Furthermore the colours also that have been used blend together in a unique way as there is not one certain colour that stands out to the audience. There are many blends of oranges used which may be an indication that clash want to appeal to audiences that are bright and enthusiastic. This magazine follows the same rule as most magazines now a days as most magazines have bright colours and this shows that having bright colours must be very effective as Clash is following the style by doing it on their front cover.

The photography on the magazine is always very different on Clash magazines and their styling very month is almost completely opposite to what they chose the previous month. This is a very effective method that Clash have adopted as it is very refreshing for the audience to experience as the magazine is released monthly. This is something that Clash uses to their advantage as most magazines have the same style month in month out. Furthermore the different photography methods used are very original and Clash especially seems to cater for the artist’s genre rather than the artist catering for the magazine which is very effective as it will appeal to many different audiences if it focuses on the artist. Also from this picture I can infer that the artist is a very bright and vibrant singer because of the bright colours that he is wearing.

The simplicity of everything included within this magazine cover is what catches the eye of the audience as it is down to the fact that everything looks like it has been placed there purposely to catch the eye of the audience. This magazine is clearly very well organised as nothing is out of place. Furthermore due to pure simplicity of the front cover it may indicate to the audience/reader that there is not going to be much inside the magazine. Clash is well known for its simplicity and elegance as this is shown throughout this front cover and many more issues that Clash have made.

There are many sub heads used and they are used to also attract the audience as if they see one of the sub heads that appeal to them then they will most likely buy the magazine. The sub heads include music artists which is the main focus of the Clash magazine.

The colour palette used on this contents page is very mono tonal and monochrome. The decisions to use these colour types is very risky but Clash follow the same direction for their contents pages in most of their magazines. The risk of using these colours is that the contents page could easily look very boring and bland which means it might not

The colour palette used on this contents page is very mono tonal and monochrome. The decisions to use these colour types is very risky but Clash follow the same direction for their contents pages in most of their magazines. The risk of using these colours is that the contents page could easily look very boring and bland which means it might not

The use of the font for the main title of this contents page is very unusual and unique. Clash may have decided to use this font style to compete differently against other magazines as they are being different by changing from what the traditional magazines normally use. It will attract the reader straight away because they will need to know where the contents page is so that they can find the different sections within the magazine. It is important that the Magazine has an eye catchy title for the contents page so that the reader can identify the page straight away. Furthermore the font used is very well executed as when looking at the page it attracts the reader’s eye straight away due to the font being unusual. Furthermore the font used to explain where to find the different sections throughout the magazine is very simplistic which is very useful for the reader as they can fully understand the well organised contents page. The simple fonts used throughout this page also help with explaining everything as clearly as possible. The language that has been used to explain the different sections within the magazine is very clear and understanding which makes life easier for the reader. This contents page will attract the indie market because they just want to be able to find the different sections that will inform them on the different music artists and they would not really be bothered what the contents page looks like as long as they can find everything fairly easy.

The big clearly headings that have been used by Clash instantly attract the readers eyes after they have seen the main heading. The sub headings are very affective as after the reader has seen the main heading there eye should lead straight towards the sub headings as it will tell the reader exactly where to go in the magazine. His clear layout is very simplistic but effective as it gets straight to the point which is good as when the reader is reading the contents page they do not want to spend a lot of time trying to understand where the different sections are within the magazine. The contents page looks very well organised with a structured

Furthermore the use of no pictures on this contents page yet again is another risky move that Clash have decided to choose. The decision to not have any images on the contents page just shows that Clash are willing to take risks that will identify them differently compared to other magazines within their genre. Most magazines within the same genre of Clash will most likely have at least one image to portray a section within the magazine. On the other hand I also believe that Clash have purposely not included an image because they are trying to add to the genre that they are trying to get a cross.

The date and issue number is placed strategically in the bottom right hand corner as it is something that is not very important but information that needs to be included. This reassures the reader what monthly magazine they are reading as they will clearly see the txt as it is on its own in the corner of the contents page.

This contents page is also a Wob as there is white text on a black background. This is a very effective technique that Clash have decided to use as it makes the text looks clearer for the reader and also it makes it look more appealing to the reader.

Page 3: Analysis of 3 Magazines

Furthermore on the double Paged Spread the text is placed strategically to the right of the first page, this shows that a real style of use has occurred during the making of this magazine. Clash tend to use this style throughout their magazines as they place the text to the right of the first page, this may be to show that they are unique and different compared to other magazines within their genre. I think that Clash use this style as its different and unusual and it’s a way of attracting the reader’s attention , furthermore they will also be attracting their genre which is indie music as they look for interesting and unusual things.

The colour palette used for the Double Paged Spread is incredibly similar to front cover, as there are many bright colours that have been repeatedly used like orange and yellow. This will draw the reader’s attention due to the bright colours but not only that as the picture used on the right hand side of the double paged spread is also the artist which is on the main cover. Furthermore all the colours used on this magazine are also secondary colours which may indicate that Clash is trying to be alternative and different as this is their genre group. The artist in the picture is also wearing a green and yellow shirt which is very different and would appeal to the indie/alternative genre.

There are two main headings of the article, Clash choose to do this as it is a style they follow throughout all of the magazines that they make. They will have a main heading in the top left hand corner of the first page and then another main heading in the middle to lower part of the first page. The main headings are not massively oversized which creates and eye catching design for the reader. The lower to middle main headline is in a big black bold font which is very appealing to the reader, I think this has been used to show the reader where the article starts and what the article is actually about. It is a very unusual design, as you would most likely not have a blank space in between the two main headings, I think Clash have designed the double paged spread like this to appeal to the indie/alternative audience as they like unusual differences. This design is very effective as it will attract the reader in many different ways whether it’s just unusual or the font of the main headings that attract the reader. Finally the use of a black bold letter R is also a very traditional way of starting an article as many magazines start and article by using this method.

Although there is a lot of blank space throughout this double page spread, the layout is very clear and organised as everything is placed strategically by Clash. They make bank areas so that the reader will go straight to the part that Clash wants them to and in this instance it will be the Main heading that’s in bold.

Page 4: Analysis of 3 Magazines

The colour palette used on this front cover is for the most part very bold and black. This is used very effectively though as the artist Rihanna looks to play a major part of the front cover. On the other hand the use of bright fluorescent yellow is also very effective as it allows the magazine to stand out on a magazine stand. I-D follow the tradition of having their brand in a bright florescent colour and they may do this to try and look alternative to the other magazines within that genre. Furthermore the colour palette used is also very neutral as the colour palette mainly consists of black colours with the greyish/white background. I-D will use the bright florescent yellow to try and make the magazine look more fun and exciting which may be appealing to an alternative/indie music group. I-D use the different colours very effectively as using bold colours clearly shows that they are not afraid to compete against other magazine in the market.

The picture symbolises that everyone can be different as Rihanna has dreadlocks in this picture which symbolises that she is trying to be different and alternate. Furthermore Rihanna has one of her dreadlocks covering one of her eyes which is a symbol of I-D magazine, this is used as it makes it easily recognisable with the readership. Furthermore Rihanna is wearing a Black shirt on a white background which clearly stands out so it may symbolise that she is a very big artist and in fact she is a worldwide phenomenon. The way Rihanna is looking forwards towards the camera may also be used to try and entice the readership to pick it up and read the magazine.

The main cover line is a very basic font as it is very clear and understandable. It is a bold white is very effective as it is on the black background of the artist’s clothes, this is called a Wob and it is very effective in many different ways as it makes the cover line look eye catchy which is the main aim of the cover line. This cover line shows that I-D have chosen simplicity over unusual which is very effective most of the time as when people look at magazines they like to see simplicity. Many people will be intrigued by the design of this front cover and also the fonts that have been used are very simple but effective in many different ways. The font is clear and bold which means it will appeal to many people when on a magazine stand.

The barcode used on the front cover of this I-D Magazine has been strategically placed with both the issue number on the side of the barcode and also the price at the left of the barcode. It is placed in the top right corner out of the way which means it doesn’t affect the design of the magazine as it is out the way. Furthermore it is important for I-D to have a barcode as the people buying the magazine will need to know the price.

Another feature of this magazine is that on the left of the front cover there is information about the issue and it gives a clear indicator into what to expect within the magazine. I-D magazine are known for following the tradition of not giving a lot of information away on the front cover, this can be a positive and a negative for people looking at the magazine as some people will only read the magazine if they know what’s included and some prefer very little information so that they are enticed into buying it to see what inside. It is certainly most necessary that I-D give their readers some indication into what is going on in the magazine even if that means putting the information in small font the on right hand side of the front cover.

The masthead of this magazine is magazine is incredibly different to anything I have seen before. I-D magazine is known for always having models on the front cover with a winking face or with one eye covered up just like this magazine with Rihanna’s eye covered up. This is replicated in the masthead as well because it looks like a winking face with I being slanted to the right. This is an inventive way of advertising their magazine and brand, it is vital that I-D have a symbol that represents them as people will remember the magazine by the brand itself.

Page 5: Analysis of 3 Magazines

The colour palette of this contents page also follows the pattern that the front cover has chosen to use as there is a bright fluorescent used to entice the readers. It is important for the reader to understand where the contents page, I-D have clearly involved the colour yellow to try and make the page look eye catchy which is needed so that the reader can understand the contents page. I-D have only chosen to use two colours for the contents page which is yellow and white. This also backups the idea of I-D being simplistic, although there are very little colours used it is probably the most effective way of grabbing the reader’s attention as they yellow is the only colour standing out to them.

This contents page has a very unusual layout and I-D is clearly not following the tradition of most magazines. This indicates to me that I-D are trying to be alternate and different to the rest of the magazines so they might be trying to appeal to the indie/alternate music group. The layout is very unusual as it is structured with paragraphs and the pages numbers are included within the paragraphs. This contents page is structured very well and the layout looks well organised although it is very different compared to what a traditional contents page should look like. It has a few sub headings that are in a bold black which allows the reader to understand the different sections of the magazine. The layout of this design is incredibly unique to anything I have ever seen before, it is very refreshing to see this contents page as it completely different compared to the traditional contents page that you normally see in magazines. As this contents page is different I-D may be focusing on the target group of Indie/ alternative music groups.

The fonts used for the contents page are very simple and clear which is probably the most effective way of showing information on a contents page. The font is very clear, the font is black on a white and yellow back ground as well so it stands out to the reader. The only negative of this contents page is that the size of the font is not that big even the sub heading and main title is quite small which does not do the contents page any justice.

Another feature of this contents page is that it has a picture of the front cover at the bottom of the contents page; this may be used to reinforce the idea that Rihanna is the main star of the front cover and it also reminds the audience of the front cover and the style that they are trying to reflect to the audience.

Furthermore the yellow symbol in the background of the contents page is the symbol of I-D which reinforces the idea of I-D has a symbol that they are recognised by and lot of people will know the magazine by their symbol. It is in a bright fluorescent yellow as I-D are following the tradition of keeping the florescent yellow that they used on the front cover of the magazine.

Page 6: Analysis of 3 Magazines

The colour palette that I-D have used is very risky as all the colours are very dull and boring; however this actually works very effectively as the double Paged spread looks very well organised and clear. The picture used is black and white which is very rare for a magazine as most traditionally have pictures with colour. This is very different compared to other magazines so it may show that I-D is trying to target the indie/alternative group. I personally feel that this will not attract the audience to read the article as it is very dull and boring and not very appealing. Although on the other hand the colours make the article look very organised and sophisticated.

The main heading for this article is something that is very unique and will inspire a lot of people. ‘’ Hear the music, feel the beat’’ this is a quote that will inspire a lot of people so the fact that I-D have used this is a very unique and imaginative technique of grabbing the reader’s attention. Furthermore something that is unusual about this Double Page Spread is that the page number is placed at the top of the article where usually it would be placed in a corner at the bottom of the double page spread. This is another example that could show that this magazine is trying to target the indie/ alternate music group.

The layout of this double page spread is very well organised, the article is in a paragraph form which allows it to be easier for the reader to read the article. There is one negative of this layout as when some people look at this page they will feel that the text is too long to read so they might skip past it without any hesitations. The image has been placed on the left hand side of the double paged spread which is a little bit unusual for a magazine of this calibre as most magazines have the image on the right hand side.

The double page spread looks aesthetically pleasing, especially for the reader. They will look at the double paged spread and want to read it due to it being very sophisticated and organised. One negative of this Double Page Spread is that the font of the main heading is quite small which means it won’t be eye catchy enough to attract the reader. The Mise en scene of the picture has varied from the front cover which is very important as it keeps the reader engaged with the magazine and furthermore the image is also a midshot which allows the reader to see what the artist is wearing.

The colour palette used on the cover is incredibly neutral as the colours within the palette include black, grey and a varied amount of pale skin colours. The colours are very simplistic but Wonderland has executed their front cover by using these colours as it looks very sophisticated. The idea of using barely any colours will

The cover lines on this front cover blend in with the style of the front cover; this allows the cover lines to not be as obvious on the front cover but it has the vital information that’s needed to tell the reader what’s included within the magazine. Cover lines are really important on the front cover of a magazine as it allows the reader to understand what included within the magazine. The cover lines are also Wobs as it is white text on a black background which may be used to try and make them stand out to the reader.

The photography used on the front cover is a mid-shot and it is very effective as the shot shows Mariah Carey with very minimal clothing on which will attract the male gaze to the magazine. This is a very effective method of getting a certain audience to look at their magazine as if people see Mariah Carey on the front of a magazine without hardly any clothes on then they will most likely buy the magazine. Mariah is wearing black clothing which makes her bright body stand out to the readers.

The masthead of this magazine is incredibly bold and it stands out on the front of the page. Wonderland is known for always doing their masthead right in the centre of the front cover. The masthead of this magazine matches the colour scheme of this magazine as it is black and white throughout the front cover. The font of the masthead of this front cover is very clear and bold which enables the front cover to be appealing to an audience. It is black and bold which allows it to stand out on the front cover of the magazine. The barcode used on the front cover of this Wonderland Magazine

has been strategically placed with both the issue number at the bottom of the barcode and also the price at the left of the barcode. It is placed in the bottom left corner out of the way which means it doesn’t affect the design of the magazine as it is out the way. Furthermore it is important for Wonderland to have a barcode as the people buying the magazine will need to know the price.

The main cover line that’s states ‘’Mariah Carey’’ is used to show the audience who the music artist is and who the magazine will focus on for a small minority of the magazine. The cover line is in the same font as the masthead, Wonderland may have decided to do this as they are both very important features on the front cover of this magazine. They allow the reader to understand what is going to be in the magazine and who is featured within the magazine.

The colour palette of the contents page is fairly similar to the front cover of the magazine, as it mainly features black and white with skin colours as well. On the other hand this contents page features some bright colours like orange and a baby blue which will attract the reader towards the page. The layout of this contents page is very traditional and many magazines also tend to use this layout. They will make the test on the left and then use images on the right like they have done here. I think the layout looks very sophisticated and clear which makes it easier for the reader to understand the contents page. Wonderlands have used the page numbers on the left and then they use text to explain what is in the different sections of the magazine. Furthermore Wonderland have also followed the tradition as they have used some smaller images and then finished with a larger image at the bottom of the contents page.

The fonts used for this contents page are very simplistic but very effective as it allows the reader to understand the contents page and they can clearly see what they are looking for. They use the exact same font throughout the whole of the contents page which allows it to look sophisticated and clear.

Another feature of this magazine is that the images have page numbers on which can be a very effective method of telling the reader where the different sections are throughout the magazine. They are placed strategically in the bottom left hand corner so that they are not that obvious.

Page 9: Analysis of 3 Magazines

The colour palette for this double paged spread is very dull and boring. However the little girl is wearing purple and this will catch the eye of the reader. This is a very effective way of leading the reader into the picture and the double Paged Spread. The colours are very plain but in a way this makes the double page look very simplistic and sophisticated.

The layout of this Double Paged Spread is very traditional as they have an image on the left and then the text is in columns on right hand side of the Double Paged Spread. The negative of this is that all the text looks very long; this may mean that the reader doesn’t want to read it all and be engaged within the article. Wonderlands have clearly followed the traditional layout of a Double Paged spread and it is a very effective way of doing so.

The main heading of this double paged spread is not very effective as the size of the font is not very large so it will not appeal to the reader. However the main headline is in a black bold font which stands out compared to the rest of the article.

The double page spread looks aesthetically pleasing, especially for the reader. They will look at the double paged spread and want to read it due to it being very sophisticated and organised. The Mise en scene of the picture has varied from the front cover which is very important as it keeps the reader engaged with the magazine and furthermore the image is also a midshot which allows the reader to see what the artist is wearing.
