Recent Aerial Photograph of Downtown Detroit and its Surrounds

Photograph shows Detroit's small commercial district in the center lower half of the image. Thisarea is located immediately north of the Detroit River, which is not shown here. Massiveexpressways surround the other three sides of Detroit's downtown. These cut deep and widetrenches through the region's urban core, and are surrounded by hundreds of acres of devastatedVictorian era neighborhoods. Vast swaths of these places have been reduced to little more thanfields and burned out houses and buildings.

Detroit's Book Tower

The once magnificent book tower at once represents an eccentric architectural statement and is a typicalexample of Detroit's many underutilized commercial towers dating to the 1920s. In its present condition, the Book tower appears to be in danger of joining Detroit's abandoned skyscrapers, which compriseapproximately half of the City's total number of downtown commercial towers.
