A NOTE FROM FATHER MIKE Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On this Fourth Sunday of Lent, we gather to worship and to adore our Lord Jesus. We welcome all our guests and visitors who join us around the altar of God. We’re glad you are here. This past Monday, March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation, made me think of my car. A Prius and the Annunciation—what do they have in common you might ask? They say, “God works in mysterious ways,” but God doesn’t hold a candle to how my brain works. Anyway, I digress. In the last eight months, I have had numerous problems with my car. I’ve battled a slow leak in one tire. I was pulled over in November because my back tail lights were out. A front headlight went out on Christmas Day. A bad computer chip has made my emergency lights go on for no apparent reason. To top it off, I even managed to lose my car in the church parking lot one Sunday morning. Mother always told me that I wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. I couldn’t remember if I had parked it in the north lot or the south lot. As I was walking up and down the rows of parked cars, I began to notice the many and various makes of cars. We have some really nice cars I might add. What I noticed is that most of our parishioners and I share a rather disturbing trait. We’re NOT like our Blessed Mother Mary. While I have a Prius and others have a GM, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes, or other vehicles, Mary had her FIAT. I told you God doesn’t hold a candle to how my brain works. Lent reminds us all that we too should have a FIAT. Mary’s Fiat, her “YES” to God’s will is what we should be striving to imitate. Lent is HALF OVER. We’ve come to the Fourth Sunday of Lent, or as it used to be called, Lateria Sunday. Lateria means REJOICE. We rejoice for Lent is half over. We rejoice for the Lord is so near. We rejoice for Lent has been a time of transformation for each and every one of us. I hope it has. The Prophet Joshua in our First Reading recounts how the Israelites have reached the Promised Land. They celebrate the Passover and remember how God fed them for 40 years with manna in the desert. Like the Israelites, may we always “taste and see the goodness of the Lord.” St. Paul reminds us that we have become new creations for we have been reconciled by Christ. As ambassadors of Christ, we are to share this good news of reconciliation with all we meet. What an awesome responsibility. In our Gospel, we hear of two brothers. Neither one is a poster child of faithfulness. Yet, one brother receives forgiveness while the other refuses. We know it as the Parable of the Prodigal Son. As we continue our Lenten Journey, may we like the Prodigal Son, may we be like Mary, give our FIAT, our YES, to God. We have much to Rejoice over as we celebrate God’s gift of reconciliation. May our FIAT be complete, may our FIAT be sincere as we take up our crosses and follow Jesus in faith. Have a great week. God bless you.
In Christ, Fr. Mike
Welcome! For more than 23 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin Welcome: Steve & Marci Paraboschi
