THE MISSION OF ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC
CHURCH IS TO EXTEND THE KINGDOM OF GOD
BY SHARING GOD’S LOVE IN THE CHURCH COMMUNITY
THROUGH SPIRIT-FILLED LITURGIES,
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION, AND SERVICE TO OTHERS.
2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN November 25, 2012 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN July 26, 2015 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
+ Pax et Bonum!
Welcome to St. Maria Goretti Parish! Today we gather together to celebrate the
Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We welcome everyone to the table of the Lord! We
especially want to welcome all of our guests and visitors who are joining us for Mass this
weekend. We are very glad that you are here to pray and worship with us at the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass! We also want to welcome and acknowledge our friends and guests
who are joining us for Mass and who are here visiting Westfield’s new sports complex, Grand Park, for youth sports
events. Thank you for making sure that you and your family get to Mass even when you are on the road!
Two weeks ago, we were very blessed to get to have our annual St. Maria Goretti Italian Festival, to celebrate
the Feast of St. Maria Goretti. Despite the threat of rain showers for most of the day, the wet weather held off, and
a beautiful evening was had by all! I’m a little late this year, but I certainly want to thank and acknowledge Missy
and Jeff Hopp and Erika and Ben Horan for their outstanding job as co-chairs of this year’s event. I’d like to thank
Sheryl Clifford for once again coordinating volunteers for this year’s Festival. Sheryl tells me that over 425 people
volunteered to serve at some point and in some capacity on Saturday, July 11th. I’d like to thank everybody who
volunteered, everyone who helped out, and even all of those who came out and joined us for this year’s celebration.
It was a great night. My friends from Italy were here and even they acknowledged that it was a great time. They
loved the meatballs and sausage subs. They didn’t care so much for our tiramisu. Apparently, when you live in
Rome you get spoiled by the really good tiramisu. Thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s Italian Festival
happen for all of us!
All of us continue to pray for our Music Director, Leslie Franzen. Hopefully, you are too! Leslie was severely
injured in a car accident on July 9th and is still recovering from her injuries. Please keep her in your prayers! I offer
my thanks to all of our music ministers who have stepped up and are filling in, while we are missing our amazing
leader. Again, a reminder, if God has given you musical gifts, either with your voice or with instruments, or if you are
gifted in the area of sound technology, please come forward now to help out and share your gifts. We need YOU
now more than ever! Call the Parish Office if you can help out.
Speaking of music, beginning next weekend, we are going to be using a new musical setting for the Mass
parts. These musical settings have been a real challenge for the Church in English-speaking areas of the world,
since our change to the new Mass four years ago. To be quite honest, several of the new Mass music settings
sound awful. A particular challenge seems to be to find a “Gloria” that sound good AND that Catholic congregations
can sing. We searched and long and hard and most really like the “Gloria” that we are now using. We’re just not
supposed to be using one all the time. So next week we are going to start learning a new Mass setting and a new
“Gloria”. And what do we do when we can’t find one that anybody likes? We turn to our own. Our own Toni
MacDonald-Hinkley has composed a beautiful Mass and Gloria that we are going to start using next week. It will
take us a little while to get used to it, but it has a beautiful melody and is very easy to sing, even for this guy who
sings like a moose. Let’s give it a chance and do our best to learn the new Mass setting. And thanks, Toni! You’re
awesome!
In the next several weeks, we are going to also be making some new Diocesan changes to the Mass. Don’t
worry. The words aren’t going to change again. But five years into his episcopacy, Bishop Doherty is undoing
several of the 2003 changes to the Mass that were made with the publication of the General Instruction of the
Roman Missal. The new changes are once again to get all of us more in line with what the rest of the Church is
doing at Mass. We’ll talk more about this in the next couple of weeks.
Have a great week! May God continue to bless you and yours!
In Christ, Fr. Kevin
Feed your Faith and doubt will starve to death.
Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but
with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all
do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin Welcome: Delaney Eggleston

In order to help us prepare
for the World Meeting of
Families and the visit of Pope
Francis, we will reflect upon a
chapter in the teaching of
Love is Our Mission: The
Family Fully Alive that is being utilized at this gathering.
Chapter 1: Created For Joy “Love is Our Mission”
because love is our origin and destiny. Created in the
image of God, a human being is created for communion,
which means that loving God and neighbor is the reason
for our existence. Catholics believe these things because
of Jesus, our bedrock and cornerstone. Jesus suffered
and yet persevered in love; he was crucified and yet rose
again. In Jesus, we believe that the Creator of the uni-
verse became one of us, revealing not only who God is,
but also who we are created to be and become. In a
world of anxiety and doubt, Jesus is trustworthy. When
we follow Jesus, body and soul, even when it hurts and
requires sacrifice, we are living lives of integrity; for only
in living this way will our lives coincide with the reason for
our existence. This brings us great joy. We sin and stum-
ble, but the God we meet in Christ is faithful even when
we are not. God’s forgiveness is a gift that gives us back
to ourselves, enabling us to embrace our mission and
destiny anew. Catholic sacraments and moral teachings
serve this destiny. The sacraments are a genuine en-
counter with Christ, while the moral teachings show what
Christ-like love looks like in particular situations. Catholic
life summons us to heroism and adventure even in ordi-
nary daily life. The world is charged with the beauty and
grace of God, and neighbors who need our love and kind-
ness are all around us. ~ Dr. Christopher C. Roberts

REFLECTION FOR THE 17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s Gospel we hear, “When Jesus raised his eyes
and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said
to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to
eat?” Jesus reminds his apostles that they have responsib-
ility to feed and care for others. In what ways do you
feed the hungry? What else can you do? A great way to
help feed the hungry is right in our backyard at Gleaners
Mobile Pantry on August 4. Sign up today!

the Youth Ministry section. PLEASE NOTE: FAITh and Confirmation registrations are due by August 15.
NEEDED: CONFIRMATION MENTORS!
It takes a village to raise a child and the same is true of Confirmation formation. Please pray about and consider being
a Confirmation mentor this year. You would be paired up with another individual and have a small group of approxi-
mately 8 -12 teens to lead through this sacred process. If you have been thinking about it, consider this your personal
invitation! Pray about it. If you have questions or wish to discuss further, send an e-mail to Leslie Mimms, confirmation@
smgonline.org.
YOUTH MINISTRY PARENT MEETINGS
The parent meetings for all youth ministries are scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, and Wednesday, August 12, at 7
pm in the Parish Narthex. Plan to go to ONE of these evenings if you have a son or daughter who is interested in at-
tending one of the following youth ministries: HOPE—our program for 7th & 8th graders; TRUTH—our program for all
high school students; FAITh—the preparatory year for Confirmation; or Confirmation—Sacramental preparation for Con-
firmation.
YOUTH MASS MINISTRIES TRAINING SESSION
A special training session for all high school students who would like to participate in the ministries of the 5:30 pm
Sunday Mass will be held Sunday, July 26, 4:30 pm in the Church. We will review the procedures for being a Reader,
Minister of Welcome, and joining in the music. If you are a teen who has participated in these ministries in the past
and would like to help us explain each role, contact Janet Thompson, [email protected].
SMG HELPS THE HUNGRY
SMG has teamed up with the Mobile Pantry from Gleaner's
Food Bank. Our first Mobile Pantry was held May 5 with
help from SMG students and parishioners, and we distrib-
uted food to 65 families. At no cost to SMG, the Mobile
Pantry brings enough food to distribute to 150-300 house-
holds and includes grocery products, meat, produce, and
baked goods. Food not distributed during the Mobile Pan-
try hours is donated to our Shepherd’s Gate Food Pantry.
Our next Mobile Food Pantry is Tuesday, August 4, 4-6 pm.
If you are interested in helping at the next Mobile Pantry or
during our regular pantry hours, you can send an e-mail to
[email protected]. You may also call Yvonne Clark,
(616) 283-3354, with questions about the Mobile Pantry.

FISH HOURS
Have you tried out the new FISH Hour tracking system?
Now is a great time to log those Vacation Bible Camp
and Italian Festival hours!
1. Go to www.trackitforward.com and click Sign In.
Logging in through the computer will give you access to
drop down menus to look at your timesheet and charts.
2. Download the free app Ourvolt Volunteer Time
Tracking—Track It Forward. The phone app only lets
you login hours. SCHOOL STUDENT OPENINGS
St. Maria Goretti School currently has student open-
ings for Kindergarten and 6th and 8th grades for the
2015-16 school year. If you are interested, send an e-
mail to Michelle Hanlin, [email protected]. FROM THE NURSE
Medical papers: The Nurse Office is updating all
medical care plans. We are sending medical sheets
home by e-mail and in large yellow envelopes. If your
student has brought home a yellow envelope, you have
medical papers that need to be signed by you and your
doctor and returned by the first day of school.
EpiPen news: The Nurse Office carries a “stock” Ep-
iPen for anaphylactic “allergy” emergencies. This does
NOT replace the student’s prescription EpiPens but is
available for emergencies such as multiple bee stings or
a new allergic reaction. If the EpiPen is used, parents
and an ambulance will be called. The student will be
taken to an emergency room. Parents, when filling Epi-
nephrine prescriptions, make sure the device expires
after May 2016. Also, if you want your student to carry
an EpiPen, you must have a doctor’s order for “permission
to carry.”
Hepatitis A requirement: All incoming kindergarten
students must have two Hepatitis A immunizations at
least six months apart.
