GOD’S WORDS Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clock ra-dios click on in the morning, until the last moment of the day when the television is turned off or someone bids us “good-night,” our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s words just more of the same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The challenge today is to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and attitudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus. © Copyright, J. S. Mass Journal Week Forty Eight God, show me one way in this Mass I can become a better version of myself this week. Reflection: Three or four years ago, my brother Andrew gave me a copy of a book titled Letters to a Young Poet. It is a small book that contains a collection of letters written by the great German lyric poet Rainer Maria Rilke to Franz Kappus, who at the time was a young aspiring poet. In one of the letters, Rilke penned some words that have remained ingrained on my heart since I read and underlined them in that small volume: “Be patient toward all that is unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.” - Matthew Kelly

July 16 OUR LADY OF MONT CARMEL

OUR LADY OF MONT CARMEL Hermits lived on Mount Carmel near the Fountain of Elijah (northern Israel) in the 12th century. They had a chapel dedi-cated to Our Lady. By the 13th century they became known as “Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” They soon celebrated a

special Mass and Office in honor of Mary. In 1726 it be-came a celebration of the universal Church under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. For centuries the Carme-lites have seen themselves as specially related to Mary. Their great saints and theologians have promoted devo-tion to her and often championed the mystery of her Im-maculate Conception.

History of the Brown Scapular In the year 1251, in the town of Aylesford in England, Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite. She handed him a brown woolen scapular and said, “This shall be a privilege for you and all Carmelites, that any-one dying in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.” In time, the Church extended this magnificent privilege to all the laity who are willing to be invested in the Brown Scapular of the Carmelites and who perpetually wear it.

The family celebrates the Gospel of life through daily prayer, both individual prayer and family prayer. The fam-ily prays in order to glorify and give thanks to God for the gift of life, and implores his light and strength in order to face times of difficulty and suffering without losing hope. But the celebration which gives meaning to every other

form of prayer and worship is found in the family’s actual daily life to-gether, if it is a life of love and serf-giving. As “a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good” (121) solidarity also needs to be practiced through participation in social and political life. Serving the Gospel of life thus means that the family, particularly through its membership of family association, works to ensure that the laws and institutions of the State in no way violate the right to life, from conception to natural death, but rather protect and promote it. Two centuries ago, Archbishop John Carroll worried that Ameri-cans would not appreciate the linguistic veil over our worship, and asked that the liturgy in the new United States be in English, not Latin. How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two English-speaking countries are members. Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to func-tion in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek for “thanksgiving.” For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first ap-peared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the colo-nial outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmit-ted in Latin. Reflexión al Evangelio de hoy: Mateo 13,1-23 LAS PALABRAS DE DIOS

Cada día somos bombardeados por miles de palabras. Desde el momento en que suena el despertador en la mañana, hasta el último momento del día cuando apagamos el televisor o al-guien nos dice “buenas noches”, tenemos la vida llena de palabras. Algunas palabras nos traen noticias que nos deprimen. Algunas palabras nos levantan el espíritu. Muchas de las palabras que escuchamos tratan de hacernos comprar algo. Algunas palabras son hirientes. Hoy la Iglesia nos hace prestar atención a la Palabras de Dios. ¿Son las Palabras de Dios igual que las demás –parte de una corriente sin fin de palabras que fluyen por nuestro oídos todos los días? El reto hoy es permitir que las Palabras de Dios nos inspiren renovando nuestra perspectiva y actitudes para que estén en mayor consonancia con el corazón y la mente de Cristo Jesús. © Copyright, J. REFLEXION DOMINICAL Semana Número 48

Dios mío, en esta Misa dame una señal de cómo pue-do llegar a ser una mejor versión de mí mismo, esta semana que comienza. Reflexión: Hace tres o cuatro años, mi hermano An-drew me regaló un libro titulado Cartas a un Joven Poeta. Es un libro pequeño que contiene una colección de cartas que escribió el gran poeta lírico alemán Rainer María Rilke a Franz Kappus, quien entonces era un joven aspirante a poeta. En una de las cartas, Rilke escribió algunas palabras que han permanecido arraigadas en mi corazón desde que las leí y las subrayé en ese pequeño volumen: “Ten paciencia con todo aquello que no está resuelto en tu corazón e intenta amar las preguntas mismas, como cuartos ce-rrados y libros escritos en un idioma muy extraño. No busques ahora las respuestas, que no se te pueden dar porque no podrías vivirlas. Y se trata de vivirlo todo. Vive ahora las preguntas. Tal vez las encuentres, gradualmente, sin notarlas y algún día lejano llegues a las respuestas”. —Matthew Kelly

La Virgen del Carmen es una de las diversas advocaciones de la Virgen María. Su denomina-ción procede del llamado Monte Carmelo, en Israel, un nombre que deriva de la palabra Kar-mel o Al-Karem y que se podría traducir como jardín. Existen hoy en activo órdenes religiosas carmelitas repartidas por todo el mundo, mascu-linas y femeninas, las cuales giran en torno a esta figura mariana.

Es considerada patrona de Chile y su ejército. En Es-paña es patrona del Mar y de la Armada Española. En Colom-bia es considerada patrona de los transportadores; el Perú tam-bién es considerado por su devoción hacia la Virgen, donde es Patrona del Criollismo. El Escapulario es un símbolo de Consagración a la Santísima Virgen María, y de la protección de la Madre de Dios a sus devotos. La palabra "escapulario" indica un vestido super-puesto, que llevaban los monjes durante el trabajo manual. Con el tiempo se le fue dando un sentido simbólico: el de llevar la cruz de cada día, como discípulos y seguidores de Jesús. En algunas Órdenes religiosas, como en el Carmelo, el Escapulario se convirtió también en signo de su manera de ser y de vivir.

Jesús manifiesta su poder mediante el perdón de los pecados (Marcos 2:1-12). Por medio de la reconciliación con Dios, Jesús sana a los enfermos, marginalizados y hasta sus propios enemigos. Este poder de perdonar pecados Jesús mis-mo lo encarga a su Iglesia, infundiendo su Espíritu sobre los primeros discípulos (Juan 20:22-23). Según el Símbolo (Credo) de los Apóstoles, los cristia-nos creemos en el “perdón de los pecados”. Esta creencia se relaciona con creer en el Espíritu Santo, la Iglesia, la comunión de los santos, la resurrección del cuerpo y la vida eterna. En el perdón de los pecados, el Espíritu Santo manifiesta su continua presencia y acción en la Iglesia y comunión de los santos. Quie-nes reciben el perdón de los pecados mediante la celebración del Bautismo o del sacramento de la Reconciliación, están pre-parados para la resurrección y la vida eterna. Este evento se desarrolló sin contra-tiempos con los puestos de juegos, comida, finan-zas, voluntarios, donantes, sacerdotes y coordinadores de entre-tenimiento, y sobre todo a las personas que asistieron a nuestro festival y contribuyeron con su presencia y apoyo.

El éxito de nuestro festival no hubiera sido posible sin su esfuerzo y organización. Realmente se sintió el compromiso sincero de todos los involucrados. Esperamos poder seguir sir-viendo a nuestra parroquia y continuar trabajando juntos como una comunidad, viviendo nuestro lema “Cumpliendo con la Misión de Misericordia”.

Lời Chúa : “Ai đã có thì được cho thêm, và sẽ có dư thừa; còn ai không có thì ngay cái đang có, cũng sẽ bị lấy mất.

(Mt 13:12)

Anh chị em thân mến, Hôm nay Chúa dạy chúng ta một bài học về đức tin qua dụ ngôn người gieo giống trong Tin Mừng Thánh Mat-thew. Chúa giải thích cho chúng ta ý nghĩa về dụ ngôn đó như sau : - Hạt giống gieo bên vệ đường bị chim ăn—nghe lời rao giảng mà không hiểu, nên bị quỷ dữ cướp đi điều đã gieo. - Hạt giống gieo trên nơi sỏi đá, thiếu rễ—nghe lời và vui vẻ đón nhận nhưng không giữ lại trong tâm trí để suy niệm, nên Lời Chúa không bén rễ trong lòng, nên cũng dễ quên. - Hạt giống gieo vào bụi gai bị ngộp chết—nghe lời nhưng lo lắng sự đời làm chết nghẹt, Lời Chúa không có cơ hội lớn lên để hướng dẫn đời sống chúng ta. - Hạt giống gieo vào đất tốt thì sinh hoa quả—nghe lời và hiểu nên thi hành lời Chúa trong đời sống - mến Chúa, yêu người và có tâm hồn bình an. Nghe bài học về đức tin này, chúng ta thấy rằng cách thức đón nhận Lời Chúa rất là quan trọng, Lời Chúa được ví như hạt giống, con người và tâm hồn chúng ta chính là mảnh đất để cưu mang hạt giống Lời Chúa. Chúng ta có sẵn sàng trở nên mảnh đất mầu mỡ, để ấp ủ hạt giống Lời Chúa được lớn lên và sinh hoa kết quả trong đời sống chúng ta không? Chúa dạy cho chúng ta biết con đường duy nhất đi về trời là cái HẠT GIỐNG GIEO VÀO ĐẤT TỐT. Lời Chúa được sinh hoa kết quả, người gấp trăm, người sáu chục và người ba chục. Đó là những người nghe lời Chúa mà đem vào cuộc sống hằng ngày để thực hành. Còn những ai không nghe, hoặc nghe mà không tin để đem ra thực hành, thì chắc chắn sẽ không thể sinh được hoa quả gì cả, do đó Lời Chúa không có sức ảnh hưởng gì trên người nghe vì họ không tin theo. Cho nên các thánh Tông đồ dạy rằng : “Đức tin không có việc làm là một đức tin chết”, nên cho dù họ nghĩ là họ đã từng có đức tin, nhưng loại đức tin này thuộc về trí óc mà thôi, vì chính những chọn lựa trong đời sống của họ đã chỉ chứng rằng họ không có đức tin. Trong đại học cũng có những giáo sư có bằng tiến sĩ về Giáo hội học (Religious Studies). Họ biết tất cả những gì Thiên Chúa và Giáo hội dạy, nhưng họ không theo đạo Công Giáo vì họ không tin. Chính vì thế đức tin là điều rất quan trọng, vì đó là điều thúc đẩy chúng ta can đảm từ bỏ mọi sự, đi theo Chúa và thực hành điều Chúa dạy. Chúa Giêsu cũng dạy rằng không phải ai cũng nói : Lạy Chúa, lạy Chúa mà được vào nước trời đâu nhưng chỉ có những người nghe lời Chúa mà đem ra thực hành thì mới được vào. Để đón nhận lời Chúa, trước tiên mỗi gia đình cần phải có một cuốn Kinh Thánh để đọc lời Chúa hàng ngày nếu có thể hoặc ít ra hàng tuần. Đức Mẹ dạy cho chúng ta cách đọc lời Chúa ở trong Kinh Thánh là “Suy đi nghĩ lại trong lòng”. Đúng vậy, chỉ có những người suy gẫm Lời Chúa như Đức Mẹ dạy, thì ma quỷ mới không cướp đi lời Chúa trong lòng của họ, ngay cả khi không hiểu ngay được. Đức Mẹ Maria xưa kia cũng vậy, khi tìm được Chúa Giêsu trong đền thờ, và khi nghe Chúa trả lời, Mẹ Maria cũng không hiểu, và Mẹ đã giữ lời đó trong lòng để ngẫm suy. Hãy xin ơn Chúa để không bỏ việc lắng nghe và ngẫm suy Lời Chúa nửa chừng, mà được bền đỗ đến cùng, thì chúng ta sẽ tránh khỏi bị rơi vào trường hợp hạt giống bị gieo trên vệ đường, và đồng thời xin Chúa ban thêm đức kiên nhẫn để hiểu biết Lời Chúa mà không chán nản cứng lòng, để khỏi là trường hợp hạt giống gieo trên sỏi đá. Chúa phán : “Của cải các con ở đâu thì lòng các con ở đó”. Chúng ta hãy lấy lời Chúa làm của cải đời mình, vì tất cả mọi sự của thế gian sẽ qua đi, nhưng một chấm, một phết của Lời Chúa sẽ không qua đi. Nguyện xin Thần Khí Chúa giúp chúng con biết chuẩn bị tâm hồn đón nhận Lời Chúa và ngẫm suy trong lòng để đem ra thực hành mỗi ngày, nhờ đó chúng con được thừa hưởng phần phúc Thiên Đàng với Chúa muôn đời.
