A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Pax et Bonum!
Greetings from St. Maria Goretti as the Catholic Church celebrates the Fifth Sunday of
Lent this weekend! We trust that everyone is staying safe and healthy. You are so missed! Last
weekend was very strange and very different, with no public Masses. At one point last Sunday morning, I stood in the
middle of the church and thought how I never thought I’d ever see anything like this. An empty St. Maria Goretti on a
Sunday morning. I’d like to thank everyone who has taken advantage of the live-streamed Masses online. We are
trying to stay consistent with our regular Sunday Mass schedule, and offer the chance to pray with one of priests at
4:30 PM on Saturday evening, or at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, or 5:30 PM on Sunday. We are working on making the sound
better. Last weekend it was a little like watching one of those old Japanese Godzilla movies, where the sound didn’t
quite match up with the picture. I saw Fr. Mike live last weekend, and he would move his mouth and four or five
seconds later, you would hear the words. Awkward! We’re working on it.
With not having public Masses, obviously a big concern around here is paying our bills. The COVID-19
pandemic has wreaked a lot of damage already on our economy. Most likely, you are already feeling this at your
home. Once again, we must work together to keep our home here at St. Maria Goretti strong. Just like in summer
months when so many of us are traveling, I would like to encourage all of us to mail in your weekly contribution to the
Parish Office during these weeks when Masses are suspended. We need everybody’s help and support now more
than ever! I’d like to thank all those who are doing online giving. Situations like the one we currently find ourselves in
is exactly why online giving can be so beneficial to a Parish community. And we do pray that this is all over soon, not
only for the health and well-being of our brothers and sisters, but also for the health of our economy.
Easter is just two weeks away! It is still too early to tell what Easter 2020 is going to be like. And next
weekend is Palm Sunday. In all likelihood, this is going to be a very different Holy Week and Easter this year. We
can’t do a lot about it. But what we can do is we can keep the Spirit of Lent, and Holy Week, and even Easter alive in
our hearts and in our homes. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE HOLY WEEK! But just because we can’t come together for
the liturgical celebrations doesn’t mean that we don’t find ways of celebrating them in our homes. What about trying
a Seder Meal at home this year? How about praying the Stations of the Cross each night of Holy Week as a family?
The kids can even draw or color the Fourteen different Stations! And even this week, let us not forget that it is still
Lent! In a Lent where it can first seem like we have all had to give up so much, we do want to remember that this is
still our time of penance, and sacrifice, and prayer, and alms-giving. Lent isn’t suspended because of the Coronavirus.
And hopefully, all of us are still praying! Praying for our world. Praying for those who are sick. Praying for
those who have died. Praying for our scientists and re-searchers who are working towards a cure. These are
unprecedented days! We’ve all got to keep praying and begging God for His mercy and help. The Rosary is awesome!
Praying along with the live-streamed Mass is another great thing. Praying the Liturgy of the Hours, the Morning Prayer
and Evening Prayer of the Church is another great idea! We’ve got more time than ever to offer our prayers to God.
Are we?
Let us do our best. Let us be our best! This is the time for heroes!
In Christ,
Fr. Kevin
You’ll never soar like an eagle if you live like a turkey.
Welcome! For more than 24 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but
with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all
do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin

When watching Mass from home, we encourage you to
pray the following prayer for spiritual communion during
the time in the Mass when you would normally be receiv-
ing the Eucharist:
"My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most
Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I
desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now
receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into
my heart. I embrace You as if You have already come,
and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be
separated from You. Amen."

UPDATE ON OUR SPRING FLING GALA
In light of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and recommendations from
health officials to stem the spread of the virus, the annual Spring Fling gala
will no longer be an in-person event. On Friday April 24th, we will now be host-
ing a family friendly Virtual Spring Fling, and we ask for help in making this
virtual event a success!
We believe it is more important now than ever to carry on with the steward-
ship mission of the Spring Fling, as the funds raised through the gala are im-
portant to the operations of the parish and our ministries.
SPRING FLING: 24 HOURS OF PRAYER AND GIVING
Our Virtual Spring Fling will be a 24 hour prayer and giving cam-
paign and will start on the same date as our original schedule
Spring Fling, Friday, April 24th. Beginning at 6:00 p.m. on this date and extending until 6:00pm on April
25th, parishioners will be asked to sign-up for a time to pray for all those affected by the COVID-19 pan-
demic. Throughout this 24 hour period, we will be accepting donations to support the parish and our
ministries during these times of uncertainty. Watch for more information in the coming weeks!
NOTE TO SPRING FLING TICKETHOLDERS, SPONSORS AND DONORS
Thank you to everyone who had already bought gala or raffle tickets, generously committed to sponsoring the event,
or donated items for the auctions. The Spring Fling chairs will be in contact to discuss your options going forward. In
the meantime, if you have any questions, contact our chairs at [email protected].
THANKS TO THE SPRING FLING COMMITTEE
Many thanks to the volunteers who devoted so much time and energy into planning ”A Night at the Derby.” We look
forward to enjoying the fruits of your labor at next year’s gala, when we will return to our traditional format! Stay tuned
for more details about our Virtual Spring Fling: 24 Hours of Prayer and Giving.
