The Third Term at St. John's was no exception; it too wasjam-packed with numerous events. The 190th anniversary which the College celebrated on the 4th of May 2013, culminated in a grand final celebration on 7th December 2013. The highlight of this function was the ''Happy Birthday Dear Old Boys'' Birthday Party, a special event organized for Old Boys celebrating their 50th, 60th and 70th Birthdays this year. Those who were over 70 years too were invited. Old boys who were born in 1963, 1953, 1943 or before celebrated their birthdays with the 190th Birthday of their Alma Mater. It was the College's turn to make the Old Boys, who had been, have been and will be a 'Guardian Angel' of St. John's, smile. It was the College's little way of saying a BIG THANK YOU to the Old Boys for being the backbone behind all its achievements.

Urgent Need
To continue with the new stream, some special requirements from the government need to be met. A
specially designed lab with equipment, which will cost a minimum of 30 Million LKR is a prerequisite.
This appears to be the greatest challenge for St. John's in 2014...
A New Baby on the 190th year
The in-depth trainings and studies in the technical field which were
limited to institutes outside schools and traditional universities for
the past several years have now been introduced into the school
syllabus with the introduction of Technology as the fourth stream
for the GCE A/L students. Classes for this new stream were
inaugurated on 11th September 2013.
Scope of the Stream
Three thousand students have been promised
entrance to Universities Islandwide. They can
graduate as Bachelors of Technology (BTech)
Completing A/L in the Technology Stream, will be
considered as being equivalent to having a National
Vocational Qualification (NVQ) – Level III. They can
continue their further education through Technical
Colleges and obtain a final degree (BTech).
Job opportunities with the professional
qualifications: in the fields of construction,
transportation, mechanical engineering,
environmental engineering, food processing, bio
medicine and agriculture
Present Status
Sixteen students are following this stream (13 Eng.
Tech and 3 Bio Systems Tech). Forty eight students
have shown their interest to follow in the next batch.
Presently the students are taken to the Jaffna
Technical College, Advanced Technical Institute and
to other relevant departments for the practical
sessions and they are given exposure through
relevant exhibitions and seminars too.

From the Principal's Pen:
“Another fresh new year is here . . . Another year to live! To banish worry, doubt, and fear, To love and laugh and give! This bright new year is given to us To live each day with zest . . .
To daily grow and try to be Our highest and our best! We have the opportunity Once more to right some wrongs, To pray for peace, to plant a tree, And sing more joyful songs!”
We are at the tail end of 2013. The New Year is just around the corner. It's ''another year to live.'' Another year to make others live; another year, like the 190 years that have gone by...
This year has been a very successful year for St. John's with numerous winners and participants at National, Provincial and District Levels. The number of university entrants is expected to exceed 40 this year! The College thanks the Old Boys for their assistance. A very sincere word of thanks goes to the staff, both tutorial and non-tutorial for working extremely hard, even after school hours and on holidays to make these achievements possible.
However, despite the hard work the staff has done this year, the College is unable to pay them their annual incentivedue to financial constraints. The College is going through a difficult time and therefore requests the Old Boys to continue their support.
In the coming year, unlike in the past, there is a new challenge facing the College; the challenge of providing Technology Education stream for Advanced Level students at St.John’s College; the challenge of raising 30 million Rupees to build a laboratory in conformity to government specifications. Without the funds:
St. John's cannot put up a lab and provide the required facilities.
Our College cannot continue teaching the fourth stream to the students.
Our Alma Mater will not receive the ''Super School” (1 AB Super) Status
Students from areas like Navatkuli, Colombuthurai, Ariyalai, Chundikuli, Jaffna Town and parts of Nallur will not be able to take up Technology as a stream at Advanced Level
The 17 students from St. John's who are presently following the course, the 48 students who have already enrolled for next year and the countless more who might wish to follow this new and promising stream in the years to come will be deprived of their fundamental right to education.
The 250 schools have the government to back them up butI believe that there is a mightier force backing St. John's up - the Old Boys! I appeal to our alumni benefactors and well-wishers to help St. John's to help the students, the future of Jaffna.
The tutorial and non-tutorial staff along with the students joins me in wishing you a very Merry X'mas and a Happy New Year.
Rev. N.J.Gnanaponrajah Principal St.John's College
