Making a Bentwood Box

Bentwood Box, Lesson 8

English Phrase: “Let’s make a bentwood box.”

Tlingit Translation: Lákt Ga Toolayéx

The Tlingit people call trees, “Aas Kwaaní, the Tree People.“ Entire cedar trees and parts of trees are used to make tools, baskets, canoes, houses and boxes. Carvers select a red cedar tree. The Tlingit people think it is important to thank the tree for what it provides for us. Once a tree is chosen it is thanked, “Aatlein gunalchéesh laax, Thank you very much yellow cedar tree.” and then the tree is cut down. English Translation
