The Tlingit people call trees, “Aas Kwaaní, the Tree People.“ Entire cedar trees and parts of trees are used to make tools, baskets, canoes, houses and boxes. Carvers select a red cedar tree. The Tlingit people think it is important to thank the tree for what it provides for us. Once a tree is chosen it is thanked, “Aatlein gunalchéesh laax, Thank you very much yellow cedar tree.” and then the tree is cut down. English Translation
