THE BRAIN

Its Anatomy and Their Functions

This Is Your Brain

This Is Your Brain With Pretty Colors

Sections Of the Brain

Sections of the BrainThe Frontal Lobe- Also called the Cerebral

Cortex, positioned directly behind your forehead, is associated with reasoning, planning, parts of speech, movement, emotions, and problem solving.

The Parietal Lobe- Or the Sensory Lobe, is located in the mid-section of the brain, and is associated with movement, perception of stimuli, orientation, recognition, and processing sensory information such as pain, pressure, and touch.

Sections of the Brain

The Occipital Lobe- Located in the back portion of the brain, is associated with Visual Processing.

The Temporal Lobe- Located on the bottom section of the brain, is associated with perception and recognition of auditory stimuli, memory, and speech.

The Cerebellum- Provides Smooth, Coordinated Body Movement.

Your Cerebellum Your Drunk, Cerebellum, Go Home!

Now let’s Slice Things Up to see what other goodies the brain contains.

The Corpus Callosum- Connects the two hemispheres of the brain and allows them to work together and communicate.

The Hypothalamus- Controls Your Temperature, Your Hunger/Thirst, Fatigue, and your Bodies Circadian Cycles.

Pituitary- The section of the brain that regulates glands in the body.

The Limbic system- Is primarily responsible for our emotional life, and has a lot to do with the formation of memories.

Limbic System

Some of the major parts of the Limbic System include:

• Basal Ganglia- Motor Control, Cognition, and Motor Learning.

• Thalamus- Translates Sensory Information and sends to cortex. It also controls Arousal, Consciousness, and when you are Asleep and/or Awake.

• The Amygdala- Controls Emotions, Fear, Anger, Rage, and your Fight or Flight Reflex.

• The Hippocampus- Is involved in the Creation, Storage, and Retrieval of Memories.

The Brainstem

Brain Stem

The Pons- Controls your Sleep, Dreaming, Left and Right Coordination, and Arousal.

The Medulla- Controls vital life support, cardiac and respiratory functions.

THINKING FAST AND SLOWBOTH DICTATE OUR PERCEPTION AND REACTION IN LIFE.

Fast Thinking is When You Are Looking at Facial Expressions and You Notice a Person is Happy, Sad, or Angry. (Immediate Recognition)

Slow Thinking is When You Look at a Complex Math Problem, Yes You May Know it, But A Physical Internal Reaction Occurs Causing Increased Heart Rate And Pupil Dilation.

Memory Encoding

Encoding is a biological event beginning with perception through the senses.Encoding is the crucial first step to creating a new memory. It allows the perceived item of interest to be converted into a construct that can be stored within the brain, and then recalled later from short-term or long-term memory.

If You Didn’t Learn Anything At All, Just Remember Two Important Things…
