The Real Joy of Simchas Torah is Not Torah
R av Meir Margolios author of the Meir Nesivim had a most unu-
sual custom. On Simchas Torah, instead of davening in the ye-
shiva, he would go to the shul of tailors which was located at quite some
distance from his house. There he would participate in the hakofos of the
simple working people, who really knew little more than how to read sid-
dur. His colleagues and students asked him why he chose not to daven in
the yeshiva with those who were more learned in Torah and whose cele-
brations would be more "authentic." He explained it was true that Torah
scholars are able to taste and experience and live with the joy and sweet-
ness of Torah all year round. The simple tailors on the other hand are too
busy working to be able to take pleasure in Torah study. However on Sim-
chas Torah the joy and celebration, the singing and dancing is meant to
be an expression of HaShem's command to be joyful and not because of
the joy of learning of Torah. This is the authentic service of HaShem
through joy on Simchas Torah. This is joy that we can all have regardless
of the amount of Torah we know!
Chag Sameyach,
Rabbi Cohen

Halachic Bulletin
The gemara brings three opinions in regards to Shemini Atzeres:
a) Not to sit in the sukkah:
b) To sit in the sukkah but not to make the brocho:
c) To sit in the sukkah and make the brocho.
Shulchan Aruch holds that we should eat in the sukkah by night and by
day, but not to make the brocho.
Mishne Brure: The minhag is not to sleep in the sukkah on Shemini
Atzeres
