WEEKLY LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Shabbat Before Yom Kippur

The Gemara Tanis says that the best holidays for the Jewish people are Yom Kippur and the 15th day of Av. The Gemara lists things which happened on the 15th of Av; the decree that the older generation would no longer die in the desert, the tribe of Binyamin was allowed to marry other tribes. etc. For Yom Kippur, the Gemara says Peshita, it's obvious why this day is the happiest. What could be better than the day Hashem forgives us for all of our mistakes.

There's a machloket (an argument) in Gemara Shavuot between the Rabonim and Reb Yehuda Hanasi (Rebbe) about how forgiveness works. The Rabonim said Yom Kippur atones for those who repent. Reb Yehuda says whether or not you repent, the essence of the day is so holy it procures forgiveness. However, even Reb Yehuda admits that this is only true of someone who observes the holiday, by fasting, going to shul, and praying. But for one who treats Yom Kippur like any other weekday, the holiness of the day will not do anything for him. Therefore, it’s important that we come to Shul and pray on this day, and Hashem will bless us with a Ketiva ViChatima Tova, a good writing and sealing in the book of life for a sweet year.

Baby & Me Recap: This past Shabbat our youngest LSS Youth club members got ready for Rosh Hashanah! Together we sang ‘Dip the Apple in the Honey.’ We also read a new PJ Library story, Apples and Honey: A Rosh Hashanah Story. The babes enjoyed taking turns opening the book flaps to learn about all the fun surrounding the Jewish New Year! Upcoming Events: Sunday, September 16 at 11:00 am - Sukkah Decorating, fresh pizza will be served! Monday, September 24 at 11:00 am - Sushi in the Sukkah Monday evening, October 1 - Simchat Torah Kids Hakafot and Buffet (Generously sponsored by Susan and Steven Mero in memory of Steven’s father Herbert Mero, and Susan’s parents Ruth Tabak Ungar and Norbert Ungar)
