Look at the following and underline the passive in each of the following sentences.

1. If your company makes a product from parts purchased from suppliers, and those products are sold to customers, then you have a supply chain.

2. The complexity of the supply chain will vary with the size of the business and the intricacy and numbers of items that are manufactured.

3. A simple supply chain is made up of several elements that are linked by the movement of products along it.

4. Back to those bottles and caps, they will be transported to your factory in card board boxes.

5. Those boxes must be shrink wrapped, to keep the bottles all together, then put on pallets and carried by forklift to a lorry which will drive them to you.

6. When the bottles are taken from the distribution centre to the shops and vending machines we again need more drivers.

Now prepare to write about 200 words. Two things to think about using when writing about a process are:

1. Sequencers for example, next, then, after, before, once, show the order in which things happen.

Now look back at the text. What other sequencers can you find?

2. Passive

Compare your answers with the model answer.

The diagram shows the various stages involved in the making of plastic bottles and caps in a plastic bottling plant. Clearly, this is a complex procedure that involves a wide range of complicated machinery and many workers with different skill sets.

Initially, the raw materials have to be transported from the oil refinery to the plant. On arrival these are transferred to a large storage drum and from there they are put into a special oven which heats them at high pressure to create the PET plastic granules. These granules are then mixed with recycled PET granules to create the right mix ready to convert them into plastic bottles.

To do this, the plastic granules are funnelled into an injection moulder which melts the plastic. This is then forced into the blow moulder where the shape of the bottles are made. When they are ready they are removed from the machine by a technician and transferred to the conveyor belt for packaging.

It is here that the bottles or caps are monitored for quality and purpose by the quality controller. Any damaged or faulty products are recycled. The products that are fit for purpose are then packaged into

cardboard boxes. These boxes are then taken to the warehouse, in this case by a forklift.
