After American Pharoah's easy William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) victory Aug. 2, owner Ahmed Zayat and trainer Bob Baffert offered few

clues about where the colt would start next, although

Baffert suggested a race against older horses before

the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) would be unlikely.

Both said the timing of the race—relative to how

American Pharoah bounces out of the Haskell—will

Sticking to races against 3-year-olds would rule

out the Aug. 22 TVG Pacific Classic Stakes (gr. I), but

Baffert said he's sure Del Mar officials will make an

effort to have the Triple Crown winner race in South-

    ern California.

Other races in the running include the Aug. 29

Travers Stakes (gr. I), which will carry a purse of $1.6

million (a $350,000 boost) should American Pharoah

start, the Sept. 19 Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) at Parx

'MAD GENIUS' TO RESUME TRAININGBy Ian Tapp

Michael Dickinson announced Aug. 3 he will return to training racehorses this fall after a seven-year break. Known affectionately as a "mad

genius" for training feats such as Da Hoss' two

Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) wins—the second com-

ing off a two-year layoff and a single prep race—

Dickinson will train at his Tapeta Farm in North

East, Md. He also trained Tapit, currently North

    America's leading sire.

Dickinson plans to use new technologies he

picked up while promoting his Tapeta Footings

overseas. The high-touch program can accommo-

date no more than 20-30 horses.

"This is going to be very intense, and I've got a

lot of levers to pull," he said. "If I had 100 horses, I

    wouldn't have enough arms."

Dickinson will begin accepting horses in early

September and will target the New York circuit.

"I really got serious about (returning to training)

last year," Dickinson said. "I am primarily a horse

lover. I love racing, but I love horses more. I'm

never going to lose sight of that." BH

Continuing to recover from a hip fracture at Pe-gasus Training & Equine Rehabilitation Center in Redmond, Wash., Shared Belief still doesn't have

a timetable for a return to racing, according to part

owner and bloodstock agent Jason Litt.

The champion 2-year-old male of 2013 and five-

time grade I winner has been handwalking but still

has significant rehab to undergo following his inju-

ry during the April 18 Charles Town Classic (gr. II).

"He's going in the right direction and healing

up nicely," Litt said. "There's no timetable. We're

going to do everything we can to give him the best

shot to come back. If that's six months or one year,

    that's what it will be."

Though upbeat about Shared Belief's eventual

return, Litt couldn't help but wonder about what it

would be like to take on American Pharoah.

"It would be fun to be around right now, to get

a shot at American Pharaoh," Litt said. "But we're

going to do what's best for the horse." BH

OPTIMISM AS SARATOGA SALE APPROACHESBy Tom LaMarra

Fasig-Tipton will head into its Saratoga yearling sale Aug. 10-11 on a positive note given the results of other auctions held so far this year, primarily those

for 2-year-olds in training. The sale company cat-

aloged 209 yearlings this year, up 27% from 2014.

Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning said Aug. 3

he believes the mood in the industry is one of opti-

    mism—and racing is one reason.

"I think we all get invigorated and energized in

the industry when we see a performance like (Triple

Crown winner American Pharoah in the Haskell Invi-

tational)," Browning said. "It has been a great ride for

everybody in the business. Let's hope it continues for

    a couple of more races."

Browning noted American Pharoah is a Saratoga

sale graduate; he sold (yes, back to breeder Zayat

Stables) for $300,000 in 2013. As for the catalog,

Browning called it "outstanding" in terms of ped-

igrees and physical conformation of the yearlings

scheduled to sell. "We could not be any more excited

about the sale," he said. BH

SLAUGHTER: RACING'S NECESSARY BLACK EYE?By Claire Novak

A new longform feature at BloodHorse.com fol-lows the work of Keith and Sonja Meadows, one couple working to improve conditions for horses

at auction and end their transport from the United

States to Canada and Mexico for slaughter. The piece

raises a question the racing industry has grappled

with for decades—if horses could not be sold to kill

buyers, would that alone cause owners and breeders

to better demonstrate long-term responsibility? Last

year more than 150,000 horses were shipped across

borders to be killed for meat. So what happens if

unwanted horses cannot be sent to slaughter? Is

    euthanasia a better solution?

Sonja Meadows told author Edward McClelland

the issue is not whether unwanted horses are kept

alive; she and her husband fight for the humane

treatment of animals until their lives end.

"It comes down to responsible ownership," she

said. "If you have a horse, you have a responsibility

to provide it with a humane death."

MEDICATION ISSUES TO BE AIREDBy Tom LaMarra

National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association conventions have long featured interesting two- to three-hour forums—sometimes

raucous ones—on equine medication and drug test-

ing, and this year's event probably will be no differ-

ent given recent introduction of federal legislation

that would grant oversight of medication, testing,

and enforcement to the United States Anti-Doping

    Agency.

The National HBPA Medication Committee meet-

ing, set for Aug. 8, will at least touch on the Thor-

oughbred Horseracing Integrity Act of 2015 given the

organization's stance on the measure; in July it ex-

pressed concerns over the bill's use of the Interstate

Horseracing Act of 1978, which governs interstate

simulcasts, to force racing jurisdictions to accept

USADA oversight in exchange for the right to contin-

ue full-card, out-of-state simulcasts. Meanwhile, one

of the bill's sponsors, U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko of upstate

New York, is scheduled to give the keynote address

at the Saratoga Institute on Equine, Racing, and Gam-

ing Law Aug. 11, the first day of the two-day event.

'INVINCIBLE' GETS GOODWOOD DOUBLEBy Clive Webb-Carter

Last week's Qatar Goodwood Festival saw Invincible Spirit continue his strong year with a

    group II stakes double: Shalaa,

cruising to victory in the Rich-

    mond Stakes, and Muthmir,

    winning the King George. Both

speedy sons are out of Dan-

zig-line mares: Shalaa is out of a

    War Chant daughter, while Muth-

mir is out of a Danehill mare.

    Already represented by Epsom

    Derby (Eng-I) winner Golden

Horn and King George VI & Elizabeth

Stakes (Eng-I) winner Postponed, he got his fifth

stakes winner of 2015 when Kachy captured the July

    29 Molecombe Stakes (Eng-III).

    Coolmore's five-time group I winner Canford Cliffs

leads his stud-mate Zoffany in the first-crop sires ta-

ble. Canford Cliffs has sired three stakes winners and

18 individual winners, while Zoffany, who ran Frankel

to three-quarters of a length in the St. James's Palace

    RACINGCOMMENTARYwith Bob Barry

HAIL AND FAREWELL ALREADYBy Bob Barry

It's not every day when the presumed interests of a big international bloodstock company converge with those of a weekend horseplayer,

but today is one of those days. After American

Pharoah's win in Sunday's Haskell Invitational

at Monmouth Park, I'm guessing that—for our

own separate reasons—I stand with the folks at

Coolmore Stud. I can't wait for this farewell tour

    to be over.

Other than the fact that he's spent much

of his young life at about even-money, I've got

nothing against the horse. He moves beauti-

fully. He handles any dirt surface and any type

of going. He relaxes nicely off of a hot pace

or sets his own if no one else is willing. The

one time he found himself in a tussle—in the

stretch run of the Kentucky Derby—he with-

stood 30-odd lashes and gutted out the win.

He doesn't even seem to mind having every

single one of his baths recorded for posterity

    and shared on Twitter.

As a "vertical" bettor (one who feeds the win,

exacta, and trifecta pools that pay out on the

up-to-down structure of a single results chart)

who prefers to bet against short-priced horses

rather than on them, 'Pharoah' has been turning

typically eminently bet-able grade I events into

races that are merely watchable (yes, with some

    noncommercial pleasure).

    Certain "horizontal" bettors may disagree.

Those who feed the Pick 4 and Pick 6 pools

    sometimes appreciate a short-priced but

reliable favorite that can be singled with confi-

dence, helping to hold down the already sizable

cost of their tickets. With a lifetime record of

eight-for-nine, American Pharoah has been a

    near-perfect "horizontal" horse. ("Pick" bettors

are known as horizontal players because—

when they get beat out of a 10-figure score

by a nose on the wire in the last leg of a se-

quence—that is typically the position in which

    you will find them.)

This horseplayer has always doubted that a

Triple Crown winner would ever do racing any

good. But even as I wish 'Pharoah' would just

get on with his stud career already, he may have

already helped to make future editions of the

    Belmont Stakes more profitable.

Over the 37 years between crowns, savvy

horseplayers realized that the rigors of the

series made short-priced Triple Crown aspirants

bad bets in the Belmont. Before this year's Bel-

mont, this type of analysis started showing up in

the mainstream press (for horseplayers, a sign

similar to shoeshine boys furnishing brokers

with stock picks). By proving to the world that

Triple Crowns are still possible, American Pharo-

ah may have helped to goose the win mutuels

of upset Belmont Stakes winners for years to

    come. BH
