SPEEDY LADY SHIPMAN SET FOR AL QUOZ SPRINTBy Claire Novak

Lady Shipman figures to gun to the front in the March

26 Al Quoz Sprint (UAE-I), and the chestnut Midship-

man filly has proved she can hold her own against boys.

"She'll be on or near the lead," trainer Kiaran

McLaughlin said of Randall Lowe's homebred. "Very

close to the pace, if not setting it."

Second in the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

(gr. IT), Lady Shipman was transferred to McLaugh-

lin's care after that race with the specific goal of

competing in Dubai.

"She does everything right," said the trainer, who

got a prep into the 4-year-old Feb. 6 when she won

the Ladies' Turf Sprint at Gulfstream by 2 3/4 lengths.

"She's doing great," McLaughlin reported. "She

went to the gate (March 23) perfect, no issues."

Lady Shipman drew the outside in a 13-horse

field, but the 1,000-meter (about five furlong) turf

event is on a straight course, so post positions don't

have as much impact—although the run with no

turns will be a first for the seven-time stakes winner.

"It's a little different, but she's fast," McLaughlin

said. BH

NYQUIST LOGS FINAL BREEZE FOR FLORIDA DERBY In his final timed workout in preparation for the April 2 Florida Derby (gr. I), trainer Doug O'Neill kept the distance the same for Reddam Racing's undefeated Nyquist, but added some company to spice things up March 25.

AMERICAN PIONEER EYES ARKANSAS DERBY American Pioneer, a romping maiden winner and late Triple Crown nominee, is under consideration for the $1 million Arkansas Derby (gr. I) April 16 at Oaklawn Park, trainer Wayne Catalano said.

ZICONIC SLUGGISH IN SECOND START Seemingly nothing went right for Jerry and Ann Moss' Ziconic in the second start of his career March 25 at Santa Anita Park.

FUNNY CIDE TO VISIT TURFWAY FOR SPIRAL DAY Funny Cide, winner of the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes (both gr. I) and now a resident at the Kentucky Horse Park Hall of Champions, will visit Turfway Park April 2 as part of the Spiral Stakes (gr. III) program.

HOST OF GAMBLING ISSUES ON TABLE IN NEW YORK Racing and gambling matters are still in play in New York as the governor and lawmakers try in the coming week to put the finishing touches on a new state budget.

'RIVER' READY TO ROLL IN UAE DERBY Polar River, who has yet to taste defeat in four career outings with a combined victory margin of 32 lengths, appears to be the standout runner in the March 26 UAE Derby (UAE-II).

NEW YORK PROPOSAL WOULD ADD OVERSIGHT OF VETS The New York State Gaming Commission has put together a proposed rule it hopes would add scrutiny to the practices of racetrack veterinarians.

ARABIAN RACE SET FOR APRIL 2 AT SANTA ANITA Santa Anita Park will feature the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Darley Awards Stakes, a top-level event with a $100,000 purse for Arabians, April 2.

TAPIT'S DAM 'A REAL SWEETHEART'By Blood-Horse Staff

Tap Your Heels, who has her place in Thorough-

bred history as the dam of leading sire Tapit, has

been remembered as "a real sweetheart."

The 20-year-old Unbridled—Ruby Slippers mare

died following complications while foaling March 24.

Her Super Saver colt survived.

Bred in Virginia, Tap Your Heels—an $85,000

purchase at the 1997 Keeneland July yearling sale—

broke her maiden in the 1998 Hildene Stakes at

Colonial Downs but didn't win again.

She made an immediate impact as a broodmare

through her first foal, Tapit, a grade I winner and

two-time U.S. leading sire who stands for $300,000 at

Gainesway.

Tap Your Heels has spent the last 15 years at

Dromoland Farm, which boards mares for owner

Barbara Facchino's Barouche Stud.

"She was very similar to Tapit himself," Gerry Dilg-

er of Dromoland Farm said. "She was a real sweet-

heart—my 11-year-old daughter used to lead her in

and out."

Tap Your Heels has now had 12 foals. Besides

Tapit, the best to date is Overandabeauty, a stakes-

placed winner of three races.

FRANK TALK ABOUT UAE DERBY CHANCEBy Claire Novak

Doug O'Neill's assistant trainer Leandro Mora has

an easier job than usual in Dubai, where he'll sad-

dle Frank Conversation in the March 26 UAE Derby

(UAE-II).

One horse is just a small cog in the Team O'Neill

wheel, and a busy two weeks lie ahead for the Cal-

ifornia-based operation and three of their runners

owned by Reddam Racing.

Frank Conversation, a son of Quality Road who

put together back-to-back victories in the California

Derby and El Camino Real Derby (gr. III), is a laid-back

3-year-old who has gone about his pre-race prepara-

tions with complete professionalism at Meydan.

"I have nothing but positive things to say, so I'll

just pray for the race to go our way," Mora said. "He

doesn't have a tendency to get too nervous during

training, so that's what you're looking for."

"Frank," as his connections call him, is the lone

representative for U.S.-based connections in the 17th

running of the UAE Derby, worth 170 points on the

Road to the Kentucky Derby to the top four finishers.

He'll tackle the 1,900-meter (about 1 3/16 miles) race

from the rail with Mario Gutierrez in the irons.

Meanwhile in Louisiana, assistant Jack Sisterson

will saddle Land Over Sea in the Fair Grounds Oaks

(gr. II), worth 170 points on the Road to the Kentucky

Oaks. The Bellamy Road filly, who has finished sec-

ond to champion Songbird three times—most recent-

ly in the March 5 Santa Ysabel Stakes (gr. III)—could

break through, given the chance to shine.

"She's doing excellent. I spoke to Jack, who is there

with her, and everything is positive. So now we'll

see what happens away from that crazy bird," Mora

laughed. "We hope to get lucky and try to make the

Kentucky Oaks."

Team O'Neill also has undefeated champion

Nyquist gearing up for an April 2 Florida Derby (gr.

I) showdown with Mohaymen. The son of Uncle Mo

currently ranks eighth on the Kentucky Derby leader-

board with 30 points, but could pick more up in the

Florida Derby, also worth 170 points.

Nyquist turned in his final work before shipping to

Gulfstream March 25 at Santa Anita, where clockers

credited him for five furlongs in 1:03 breezing. O'Neill

had him going his standard mile in 1:49 3/5, with the

last eighth in :11 3/5.

"He's doing super," said Mora. "After the World

Cup here in Dubai we'll all be together again." BH

ROMANS REFLECTS ON KEEN ICE'S WORLD CUP BIDBy Claire Novak

Trainer Dale Romans looks a little worse for wear

as he recovers from an illness, but he still visited

the track these past few mornings to supervise the

preparations of Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) contender

Keen Ice.

Donegal Racing's 4-year-old Curlin colt, who de-

feated Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the

Travers (gr. I) last August, had an easy gallop under

exercise rider Tammy Fox March 25.

Despite Keen Ice's poor seventh-place effort in the

Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (UAE-I) and a sixth in

the Donn Handicap (gr. I), Romans remains bullish on

his chances.

"He's as good as he can possibly be," Romans said.

"He's got the two trips under his belt. The original

prep, I think we came on top of the race too close and

he didn't seem to be ad-

justed, but it was hard

to realize that until you

see how he came out

of the race, which was

much better.

"From what we've

seen in his recent

training, he'll be a ma-

jor contender in this

race."

Keen Ice will wear

blinkers in what Ro-

mans considered a

very strong renewal of

the Dubai World Cup.

"I hate blinkers on

a racehorse; I hate

all equipment," the

trainer said. "I go with

as little as possible,

but for $10 million, if

you're going to get a

boost from blinkers,

you roll the dice and throw them on there."

Asked how he sees the race playing out when

Keen Ice breaks from post 1 in a 12-horse field, Ro-

mans said, "If it was up to me, we will let him break

on his own, let him find his stride, let horses come

over as they want.

"We've got world champion jockey (Ryan Moore),

and he just has to figure out how to get clear sailing

from the eighth-pole home."

Romans won the World Cup in 2005 with Ken and

Sarah Ramsey's Roses in May.

"$10 million brings out the best of everything, and

it should," he said. "It's been the richest race in the

world since its inception, but now it's become the

most prestigious older-horse race in the world.

"This is a little different from Roses in May, but

it's still a horse race. Winning it was a life-changing

moment for me. I was very proud to win it, and for

anyone who is fortunate to do so, it will change their

life a lot more than just money would." BH

BIG DAY AT FAIR GROUNDS FOR EA BLOODSTOCKBy Alastair Bull

Barring an elevated temperature that kept Market

Rally out of the UAE Derby (UAE-II), EA Bloodstock

would have connections to a trio of horses in top

3-year-old races around the world March 26.

As it is, the bloodstock-buying agency established

in 2014 by Equine Analysis Systems has links to

horses contesting preps for the Kentucky Derby and

Kentucky Oaks at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

On behalf of Winchell Thoroughbreds, EA Bloodstock

last year bought Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II) contender

Adore, and a half share in top Louisiana Derby (gr. II)

prospect Gun Runner, who races for Winchell Thor-

oughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm.

"We only bought six horses last year, and one's

Adore, one's Gun Runner, and one's Market Rally.

Percentage wise it's been a good year," EA Blood-

stock agent Catlyn Spivey said.

Equine Analysis Systems is a veterinary-run con-

sultancy Dave Lambert started 20 years ago. It has

a database of about 40,000

horses and connections to

horses such as Favorite Trick,

Countess Diana, Azeri, Roses

in May, Thunder Gulch, and

Tapit.

A couple of years ago Lam-

bert founded EA Bloodstock,

which focuses on traditional

methods of selection along

with scientific analysis.

"Like every other blood-

stock agent out there, we look

at horses, short list them, look

at them conformationally, and

look at their demeanor," said

Spivey, whose background

includes stints with leading

trainers Jonathan Sheppard

and Graham Motion.

"The only difference is that

we use the veterinary model

that Dave has set to kind of

make horses jump through

the proverbial hoops.

"We put them through the ringer: They'll have to

pass the cardiovascular analysis, the conformation

analysis, just all the different science that goes into

the caliber of horses that we like to be involved with."

Both Gun Runner and Adore were bought

privately—Gun Runner when he was preparing for

a 2-year-old sale and Adore when she was getting

ready for the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old sale.

Adore breezed a furlong in :10 before the sale but

was withdrawn after contracting a fever; however,

Spivey kept in touch with the consignors and bought

her a couple of weeks later.

"I wasn't meant to be at the Midlantic sale to buy

for anyone, but she just really stood out," she said.

"She was just one that I couldn't let go of for some

reason."

Market Rally was bought for a Dubai client, along

with Top Clearance, fifth behind American Pharoah

in the 2015 Travers (gr. I). Top Clearance has won in

Dubai, but Market Rally has been the greater success

after his easy UAE Guineas (UAE-III) victory.

Spivey says she's hopeful EA Bloodstock's early

success can lead to a larger client base. BH

liquidity offset that? A lot of tracks would say yes." BH

CRW BETTING LOWERS WINNING PAYOUTSBy Frank Angst

The industry's embrace of computer-robotic

wagering through the high rebates required to

sustain these players has resulted in a less attrac-

tive game for all other horseplayers, according to an

expert presenting at the Association of Racing Com-

missioners International conference in New Orleans

March 25.

Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau vice pres-

ident of wagering and analysis Curtis Linnell present-

ed a TRPB study looking at North American pari-mut-

uel handle in March 2016. It determined CRW players

accounted for 15.9% to 20.2% of total handle during

the month and cashed out between 17.9% and 23.1%

of all pari-mutuel winnings.

That success rate resulted in lower payouts for

every other bettor in the pari-mutuel pools. While

these large-volume players are making the betting

product less attractive to all other players by low-

ering winning payouts, racetracks, for now, see the

added liquidity of CRW bettors' handle as more valu-

able than their negative impact on payouts.

RACING HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER DAILY FANTASY

In the glory days of Internet poker, players

could sign up for tournaments at nearly any

hour of day and tables magically filled with play-

ers from around the world in minutes.

The Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement

Act of 2006, which cut off payments to those

sites from U.S players, brought those days to an

end.

Since then states like New Jersey have legal-

ized Internet poker. Last year during a visit to

the Garden State, I fired up a poker site to dis-

cover the level of game I wanted to play wasn't

readily available and even the most popular

games took about 30 minutes to fill. Reports say

Internet wagering revenues in New Jersey have

initially fallen well short of expectations.

Moving from gray areas of legal standing to

legal, regulated gaming presents challenges.

Certainly limiting poker to players in New Jersey

has hindered the attraction as poker needs play-

ers to deliver a full experience.

Daily fantasy will soon face

similar challenges. While some have

projected growth of daily fantasy

from its current $2.6 billion handle

to $14 billion by 2020, many factors

could impact those projections.

As daily fantasy moves to a legal,

state-regulated gaming form, the

next hurdle will be taxation and

licensing fees. Heavily taxing daily

fantasy could slow innovation, as

some smaller sites likely would not

be able to afford high license fees

and taxes.

Those hurdles could slow pro-

gress, but I suspect there's enough

demand for daily fantasy that it

will thrive. It helps that pro sports

leagues that have opposed sports wagering

expansion have embraced daily fantasy because

it brings eyeballs to their sports.

While it may take time to reach that $14

billion in handle and likely will never provide the

kind of purse boosts horse racing has seen from

slot machine gaming, it is still worth the indus-

try's while to work together with this emerging

gaming form because of its potential to bring in

new bettors.

Because daily fantasy players are partici-

pating in decision-based gambling—like horse

racing—they seem like a good fit to become

horseplayers once educated about racing.

Really, pari-mutuel wagering is the original daily

fantasy.

Tracks and advance-deposit wagering sites

are natural fits with daily fantasy. Horse racing

also would have something to offer the new

kid on the block, thanks to its experience being

regulated at the state level but finding ways to

open interstate wagering on its product. BH
