WILL ROGERS DOWNS DAMAGED BY TORNADOBy Eric Mitchell
No people or horses were killed or seriously in-
jured when a tornado ripped through Will Rogers
Downs' barn area the evening of March 30.
“We had two barns that got hit the hardest,” said
Rick Brasher, chief steward at the racetrack in Clare-
more, Okla. “We had one horse that had some cuts
and had to be shipped to the vet clinic. There were
people in the barns and none of them got hurt.”
Brasher said the tornado sheared the roof off half
a barn and did less extensive damage to another.
The track, in the midst of its spring Thoroughbred
meet, has 15 barns and 674 stalls. Brasher said most
horses racing here ship in from area training centers.
A utility company sent an industrial magnet to
the track to sweep the racing surface March 31 and
remove debris. Racing is expected to resume April
4, according to Travis Noland with Cherokee Nation
Entertainment, which owns and operates the track
and a casino there. BH

BARRETTS SEES DECLINES IN AVERAGE, GROSSBy Tracy Gantz
With Barretts' March 30 select 2-year-old sale
now in the books, sales officials say they are
set to build upon their first complete year at the
new Del Mar location.
Sale figures dropped slightly—average down
8.9% to $124,558 and gross 12.9% to $5,356,000
while the buy-back percentage was 32.8%.
However, the top two prices of $460,000 for a
son of The Factor and $450,000 for a daughter of
Smart Strike, beat 2015's top prices of $400,000
and $350,000.
"The higher-end horses did well," said Kim
Lloyd, general manager of Barretts. "Consignors
were a little nervous coming out, and they had a
right to be with a new place and a new timeslot."
Lloyd said he feels the company has established
itself at Del Mar and noted Japanese buyers in par-

the Mulholland Springs consignment at last year's
Keeneland fall sale, and after factoring in sale's
company commission and other costs, she made an
estimated profit of $307,500.
One unsold juvenile that would have returned a
healthy profit for consignor John Brocklebank, agent
for Dickman Legacy Ranch, was a Union Rags colt
bought back on a final bid of $725,000.
Originally purchased for $105,000 by Energy
Solutions and Jennifer Wadleigh as a short yearling at
last year's Keeneland January sale, the colt RNA'd for
$250,000 at Keeneland September sale.
Brocklebank said March 31 that at $725,000 the
colt was close to his reserve and he had received sev-
eral lucrative offers following the sale and expected
to get him sold.
Brocklebank and Dickman Legacy also bought
back an Unbridled's Song colt for $350,000 and a
City Zip colt (bought as a yearling for $165,000) for
$340,000. BH
BARRETTS PROFITABLE FOR TOP PINHOOKERSBy Ron Mitchell
The one-day auction was very good
to some pinhookers, as 36 of the
43 horses sold during the March 30
Barretts select sale of 2-year-olds in
training at Del Mar had previously
gone through a sales ring.
The sale-topper, a The Factor colt
consigned by Ciaran Dunne's Waver-
tree Stables, produced a whopping
695% return on investment, by far the
sale's largest profit percentage.
Purchased at Barretts for $460,000
by Narvick International, as agent, the
colt was bought from the Lane's End
draft at last year's Keeneland Septem-
ber sale by Kate Sheehan for $35,000.
Previously, JSM Equine had secured him as an
$85,000 weanling from the St George Sales' consign-
ment to the 2014 Keeneland November sale.
Wavertree's estimated profit of $382,000 is based
on the consignor's total investment cost: net price
(price less the sales company's commission) plus
upkeep, which in this case is estimated at $18,000
from time of purchase as a yearling to being sold as
a 2-year-old. For a weanling to 2-year-old pinhook,
the ROI factors in estimated upkeep costs of $27,000.
"He was a very nice colt," Dunne said, adding that
while the sale-topper produced a healthy profit for
his client, the objective for all the horses in the con-
signment is to find new homes.
Not surprisingly, the second-highest ROI of 256%
came from the second-highest-priced offering and
top-selling filly. The daughter of Smart Strike, con-
signed by Becky Thomas' Sequel Bloodstock, went to
trainer Bob Baffert on a final bid of $450,000.
Thomas had bought the filly for $100,000 from

The Road
An in-depth look at horses targeting Triple Crown races
DERBY WINNERS TYPICALLY CRUISE IN FINAL PREPBy Frank Angst
Past performances by the last 10 Kentucky Derby (gr. I)
winners suggest a close race between Mohaymen and
Nyquist in the April 2 Florida Derby (gr. I) would not hurt their
chances five weeks later in Louisville; however, a big jump in
performance by either—or both—could be a concern.
A look at the final Derby prep races of the past 10 Derby
winners reveals only one of the 10 improved by more than
three points from his career-best Equibase Speed Figure at
that point in his racing career (Animal Kingdom registered
a 11-point ESF jump in his clear 2011 grade III Spiral Stakes
victory).
In general, Derby winners in their final prep races register
ESFs similar to their career-best—a few points above or below
(see table on this page).
In terms of competition, five of the 10 Derby winners reg-
istered clear victories in their final Derby preps, including four
of the past five.
Considering you'd expect a high percentage of Derby
winners to register clear victories in their final preps, the
fact that Derby winners like I'll Have Another edged Creative
Cause by a nose in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) before taking
the Derby, and Street Sense lost by a nose in the Blue Grass
Stakes (gr. I) before his Derby victory suggests close races are
not particularly negative.
The table lists the past 10 Derby winners by year and
includes the race, grade, track, and surface of their final Derby
preps. In terms of the result of that prep, the table lists the finish
and lengths ahead or behind, the way the performance com-
pared to the horse's previous career-best ESF, and the number
of weeks (give or take a day if the prep was conducted on a
Sunday) the prep race was conducted before the Derby. BH

STELLAR FIELD TAKING SHAPE FOR ASHLANDBy Sarah Troxell
Unbeaten filly Cathryn Sophia is set to head a small
but strong field of 3-year-old filles in the Ashland (gr.
I) April 9, on the opening weekend at Keeneland.
Keeneland racing secretary Ben Huffman
spoke about recruiting efforts: "The connec-
tions of Cathryn Sophia called several weeks
ago and said they were pointing for the race.
Her connections nominated on their own,
and the real recruiting is going on now."
He added it's challenging to find connec-
tions willing to take on the John Servis trained
Street Boss filly, who was originally slated for
the April 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks (gr. II).
"We liked the purse structure better at
Keeneland," said Chuck Zacney of Cash is
King Stable, the filly's owner. The $500,000
Ashland purse doubles that of Gulfstream's
Oaks.
Other expected entrants are Rachel's
Valentina, who hasn’t raced since her sec-
ond-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile

DEEP IMPACT COLTS HEADLINE CHIBA SALEBy Naohiro Goda
Two colts by outstanding stallion Deep Impact
head a consignment of 38 from Teruya Yoshi-
da's Shadai Farm at the upcoming Chiba Thor-
oughbred sale of 2-year-olds May 16 at the parade
ring of Funabashi Racecourse in Japan.
The first, Hip 22, is the fourth foal out of the
Theatrical mare Mrs. Lindsay, winner of the Prix
Vermeille (Fr-I) and the E.P. Taylor (Can-IT). The
colt is a half brother to Mr. Owen (Invincible Spirit),
who finished third in the Poule d'Essai des Pou-
lains (French 2,000 Guineas, Fr-I).
The other Deep Impact colt is Hip 40, the sec-
ond foal of Cozi Rosie (Pleasantly Perfect), a winner
of three graded stakes in the U.S.
Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) has sired 81
stakes winners and his international reputation
was furthered March 26 when Real Steel won the
Dubai Turf (UAE-I) on World Cup day.
Shadai's consignment also includes a Workforce
colt out of Dance Partner, the high-class Japanese
filly whose victories include the Yushun Himba
(Japanese Oaks) and Queen Elizabeth II Commem-
orative Cup (both Jpn-I).
The colt is a half brother to multiple Japanese
graded stakes winner Federalist (Empire Maker). BH

MARKETWATCH INTERVIEW: TIM BOYCEBy Alastair Bull
This week's interview is with Tim Boyce,
sales director of the Texas 2-year-olds in
training and horses of racing age sale, held
by the Texas Thoroughbred Association at
Lone Star Park April 4.
MarketWatch: Texas racing has been
going through some challenging times. How
does the state of Texas racing impact the
sale?
Tim Boyce: The uncertainties hurt mar-
ketplaces more than realities. Now, I think
there's somewhat of a stability—albeit some-
what bleak—but everybody knows there's
going to be racing and what the level of
that racing is. That is better than having an
unknown. Given there is ownership of race-
tracks that seems 100% committed to keep-
ing a first-class facility, that stability is going
to help in the long run.
In addition, everyone who comes here
knows that a horse in this sale will be eligi-
ble for a $100,000 race this year (the Texas
Thoroughbred Futurity). That's a little more
guarantee for the buyer, and horses from
here can go almost anywhere.
MW: If racing continues to have difficulties
in Texas, can this sale still carve out a good
place in the market regionally?
TB: It hasn't been a problem too much
for this sale in the past because it's more
of a Southwest sale. We would sell Louisi-
ana-breds and Oklahoma-breds well, and Ar-
kansas-breds are now bringing a lot of mon-
ey. This is a centrally located marketplace,
and we have one of the best sales facilities in
the Southwest.
MW: How would you describe the strength
of the catalog?
TB: Obviously with the size (down from
123 to 85), the critical mass is weakened, but
I think I have as much top quality as I have
had in the past. Here on the grounds they
know I have as many top horses as last year
and the year before. My consignors have
brought a lot of good horses over the years—
horses that have gone on to make mil-
lions—and the same consignors come back,
like Inside Move, the Asmussens, Twin Oaks
Training, Benchmark. They bring good hors-
es every year. I'm very pleased and flattered
that they do that, and, hopefully, they'll get
rewarded on Monday.
MW: What are your expectations for the
sale?
TB: I think we'll be around the same as
last year ($75,000) for the sale-topper, maybe
even a little stronger actually. There's a cou-
ple here on the grounds every bit as pretty,
maybe even better looking than last year's
sale-topper. We just don't have as many to
sell. The demand won't change that much, I
don't think the demand's going to go down,
and our supply is down. It's just supply and
demand. BH

ht STEVE HASKIN’S DERBY DOZEN
s p o n s o r e d b y
1 MOHAYMEN
Trainer/owner: Kiaran McLaughlin/Shadwell Stable
Pedigree: Tapit—Justwhistledixie, by Dixie Union
Breeder: Clearsky Farms (KY)
Worked a half in a solid :484⁄5 March 24 for his big show-
down in the Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (gr. I). It was pretty
much all McLaughlin was looking for. He has all the advan-
tages, having won twice over the track, and it didn’t appear
as if he came close to running a peak performance in either
race, so he should continue to move forward.
2 NYQUIST
Doug O’Neill/Reddam Racing
Uncle Mo—Seeking Gabrielle, by Forestry
Summerhill Farm (KY)
O’Neill certainly wasn’t looking for any speed in his March 25
five-furlong breeze in 1:03. Coming off only one seven-furlong
race this year, there are only two ways Nyquist should be able
to beat Mohaymen at this time and place—he gets a big jump
on him or he simply is a faster, gamer, and classier horse.
3 DESTIN
Todd Pletcher/Twin Creeks Racing Stables
Giant’s Causeway—Dream of Summer, by Siberian Summer
James C. Weigel & Taylor Made Stallions (KY)
I thought he might work this weekend, as he worked exactly
two weeks after his Sam F. Davis Stakes (gr. III) score. But
owner Randy Gullatt said all is good with him and explained
that with four races at a mile or longer in the past four
months—at three different racetracks—they’re trying to freshen
him up for a busy May.
4 MOR SPIRIT
Bob Baffert/Michael Lund Petersen
Eskendereya—Im a Dixie Girl, by Dixie Union
Elkstone Group (PA)
It was good to see him turn in a half-mile work in a sharp :474⁄5
that was listed as breezing, which is rare at Santa Anita. It was
the second-fastest of 29 works at the distance March 24. There
is little doubt that, like Mohaymen, we have yet to see the best
of this horse; Baffert has left a lot in the tank.
5 CUPID
Bob Baffert/Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith
Tapit—Pretty ’n Smart, by Beau Genius
JKG Thoroughbreds (KY)
I believe there is still a great deal of untapped talent here, and
his front-running victory in the Rebel Stakes (gr. II) was simply
a case of being the best horse in the race and utilizing his
inside post in the best way possible. I wouldn’t want him to re-
peat those tactics in the Arkansas Derby (gr. I) and especially
at Churchill Downs.
6 GUN RUNNER
Steve Asmussen/Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm
Candy Ride—Quiet Giant, by Giant’s Causeway
Besilu Stables (KY)
He has all the tools and is improving with every race, and if
he can handle the six-week gap to the Run for the Roses and
get rid of some of his greenness, he is going to be a major
factor on Derby Day. I moved him just behind Cupid only be-
cause I feel Cupid beat a slightly better field in the Rebel.
7 DANZING CANDY
Clifford Sise Jr./Halo Farms and Jim and Diane Bashor
Twirling Candy—Talkin and Singing, by Songandaprayer
Halo Farms (KY)
You never want to see a trainer unhappy over a work, whether
too fast or too slow, and after he sizzled five furlongs in :583⁄5
March 26, Sise stated flat-out he did not want him to go that
fast, looking for 1:00 and change. It not only was the fastest of
54 works at the distance, the average time was 1:012⁄5.
8 SUDDENBREAKINGNEWS
Donnie Von Hemel/Samuel F. Henderson
Mineshaft—Uchitel, by Afleet Alex
Branch Equine (KY)
Boy is it close among him, Whitmore, Creator, and Cherry
Wine. I see all of them as legitimate Derby contenders. With
what he had to overcome in the Rebel, and conceding five to
seven pounds to those in front of him, and based on his em-
phatic score in the Southwest Stakes (gr. III), he is still a major
contender.
9 MO TOM
Tom Amoss/G M B Racing
Uncle Mo—Caroni, by Rubiano
Hargus and Sandra Sexton and Silver Fern Farm (KY)
What can you say about this poor horse, who has had noth-
ing but rotten luck and ill-advised rides in his last two starts,
in which he basically gave away all-important points. Glad to
see jockey Corey Lanerie at least own up to his costly ride.
10 WHITMORE
Ron Moquett/Harry Rosenblum, Robert LaPenta, and
Southern Springs Stables
Pleasantly Perfect—Melody’s Spirit, by Scat Daddy
John Liviakis (KY)
So, is this a mile-and-a-quarter horse who simply has been the
victim of circumstance in his two second-place finishes this year,
both of which he appeared to have won, but wound up losing?
That’s what you have to figure out. His sire shouts distance, but
his female family is pretty much a mile to 11⁄8-mile pedigree.
11 SHAGAF
Chad Brown/Shadwell Stable
Bernardini—Muhaawara, by Unbridled’s Song
Shadwell Farm (KY)
I still can’t separate him from the other two Chad Brown
3-year-olds, My Man Sam and Flexibility, but I’m going to
ignore his slow times, slow speed figs, slow closing fractions,
and lack of racing experience and project big improvement
when the distances stretch out. And he is undefeated.
12 EXAGGERATOR
Keith Desormeaux/Big Chief Racing, Head of Plains Partners,
Rocker O Ranch, et al.
Curlin—Dawn Raid, by Vindication
Joseph B. Murphy (KY)
Just when I was tempted to drop him from the Top 12, he
turned in the kind of work that made me wait and give him
one more chance in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I). His big
problem has been finishing off his races, and I love that he
came home his final eighth in :114⁄5 in his five-furlong work
March 26 in a sharp 1:002⁄5.
