Granny is (Valerie Bloom)

Granny is

stories in the moonlight

underneath the guangu tree

and a spider web of magic

all round we.

Granny say,

‘Only de best fe de gran’children,

it don’t matter what de price,

don’t want no one pointin’ finger’

Granny nice

Granny is

fried dumplin’ an’run-dung

coconut drops an’ grater cake,

fresh coffee smell in the mornin’

when we wake

Granny is

loadin’ up the donkey

basket full on market day

with fresh snapper the fishermen bring back

from the bay

Granny is

clothes washin’ in the river

scrubbin’ dirt out on the stone

haulin’ crayfish an’ eel from water

on her own.

What does culture mean?

The ideas, beliefs, celebrations, social choices, behaviors and ways of life of a particular group of people.

Which culture may these

pictures represent?

Steps to Success

I can: Listen carefully to an unfamiliar poem.

Think about the language of the poem and what this might tell me.

Identify new vocabulary and share it’s meaning to help understand the poem.

Old Meg (John Keats)

Old Meg she was a Gipsy,And liv'd upon the Moors:Her bed it was the brown heather turf,And her house was out of doors.

Her Brothers were the craggy hills,Her Sisters larchen trees -Alone with her great familyShe live'd as she did please

No breakfast had she many a morn,No dinner many a noon,And 'stead of supper she would stareFull hard against the Moon.

But every morn she was freshShe made her garlanding,And every night the old Meg satShe wove, and she would sing.

And with her fingers old and brownShe plaited mats o' Rushes,And gave them to the CottagersShe met among the Bushes.

Traditional Gypsy

People for whom being free to travel was (is) a very important part of their lives. Traditionally such people earned their living by natural crafts, fortune telling and manual labor.
