Abaqus is a suite of powerful engineering simulation programs based on the finite element method, sold by Dassault Systmes as part of their SIMULIA Product Life-cycle Management (PLM) software tools.

STEPS INVOLVED IN ABAQUS FOR MODELLING AND SIMULATION OF THE ANALYSIS

In Abaqus/CAE, the whole modelling of the extrusion process is divided into eight modules.

Under Part module, three axisymmetric parts in the viewport are created by giving the coordinates in the promt area.

Part-2 Die

Part name

Part-3 Reference Node

Part Module (Sketch)

Under Property module, the material property is created. In this analysis two material properties are created.

Metal

Rigid

The two material properties are assigned to these sections.

Three sections are created. The names are as follows:

Billet-section

Die-section

Ref-section

Saving and Defining Material Properties

Under Assembly module, in create instance the three parts billet, die and reference node are assembled together

Assembling the Parts

Step

Under Step module, four Steps are created, procedure is coupled-temp-displacement.

Step-1: Stabilize the workpiece inside the die

Step-2: Extrusion

Step-3: Remove the contact pair

Step:4 Let the workpiece cool down

In step-1

Time period-1 sec

Incrementation type-Automatic

Max. no of increments-100

Max. Allowable temperature change per increment :1000 C

Solution technique is contact iteration

In step-3

Time period-0.1 sec

Incrementation type-Automatic

Max. no of increments-200

Max. Allowable temperature change per increment :1000 C

Solution technique is contact iteration

In step-2

Time period-1 sec

Incrementation type-Automatic

Max. no of iteration-800

Max. Allowable temperature change per increment :1000 C

In step-4

Time period-1000 sec

Incrementation type-Automatic

Max. no of increments-200

Max. Allowable temperature change per increment :1000 C

Create Surface

Two surfaces are created.

Die Surface & Billet surface

Interaction properties are created.

Name-FRIC-INTER

Type- Contact

Contact properties options are-

Tangential behavior

Normal behavior

Heat generation

Geometric properties

Two interactions are created. Names are-

INTER. Type- Surface-to-surface-contact, Created in Initial step, propagated in step-1&2 and Inactive in Step-3&4

FILM CONDITION. Created in Step-4

Create interaction properties

Create interaction

Constraint is created.

Type- Rigid body

Reference point is selected.

Seed Mesh

Under Mesh module, for each part the seed edges are done, where the size and the number of seeds are given.

In Mesh module, meshing is done individually on each part.

Assign the Element type. Element type is Coupled-temp-displacement-CAX4T.

Creating Sets

For prescribing BC. Three node sets are created.

Seven BCs are created.

BC-1. Created in Step-1 and propagated in Step-2,3 &4.

BC-2, BC-3, BC-4, BC-5 & BC-6. Created in Step-1 and inactive in remaining steps.

BC-7. Created in Step-2 and propagated in remaining steps.

In the 1st step,

At REF node set,

U=0, V=0, and UR3=0

At AXIS node set,

U=0

In TOP,

V= -0.000125

In REF (Picked up in viewport)

Uniform temperature-20o C

In the second step, At TOP

V= -0.25

In Predefined Field, in metal bar node set,

Temperature set is 200 C

Job

Job is created

Name is given

Type is full analysis

Create job

Visualization

In visualization module, the result of the analysis can be read.

Contour plots and graphs can be plotted in visualization module.
