Inspiration from existing albums

The digipack that we have to create must include a CD cover so i have taken some inspiration from some existing albums that i think would suit the genre that i am trying to promote. For example, the debut album from Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes is very simplistic while still looking stylish and having an impact. The fire has connotations ofAnger and rage which are both emotions that are displayed a lot in the genre that i am basing my ideas on. The Arctic Monkeys

cover for ‘whatever people say i am that’s what i’m not’ has such an iconic image that everybody now recognises. For my album cover I would like to create something that is simplistic, but something that is very individual so that it can be distinctive among other music. This cover looks very edgy; the black and white colour scheme, the man’s facial hair and him smoking all indicates the rough and gritty style of the music and band which is something that i would like to replicate. The other cover for While She Sleeps’ this is the six is also very simplistic. It uses dark colours and some white highlights and the only image is the band’s logo which fans would recognise very easily. Overall, from looking at other album covers i have come to the conclusion that my cover should be simplistic, involving some dark colours and themes to represent the metAL/ROCK/PUNK style of music.

yThe band have released 1 EP in 2010 and 2 studio albums since 2012. They also created deluxe editions of the north stands for nothing and this is the six.

history

Formed in Sheffield in 2006, the band consists of vocalist Lawrence Taylor, guitarists Sean Long and Mat Welsh, bassist Aaran McKenzie and drummer Adam Savage, although they did not start with this line up. ‘Loz’ Taylor joined the band in 2009 when former vocalist Jordan Widdowson left the band because of work commitments. They are currently signed to Search and Destroy Records in the UK, The End Records[1] in the US and Shock Records in Australia, however, they have recently announced that they are going forward as an independent band and are self releasing their third full studio album. They won a Kerrang award in 2012 for the ‘best newcomers’.

The band’s genre has been described as metalcore, hardcore punk and alternative metal. They take inspiration from bands such as Thrice, Slipknot, Foo Fighters and Underoath.

I decided to choose this band as my focus because as guitarist Matt Welsh said, "it's super heavy but then it's melodic too". This is a style of music that i really like and listen to a lot. This kind of music usually has heavy drums which means that it has a good beat which would be good for a music video. The band also write their own songs and base them on their beliefs and things that they are passionate about. Most of their songs promote very realistic views about the world and the idea of individuality and independence and this is another thing that i really like about the band.

Why i chose this

The digipak that we have to create must involve one or two discs and the rest must be filled with artwork and other things associated with the band. The image to the left is a rough idea of what I would like the cover to look like. It uses a font which is typical for the band and the simplistic design fits with most other album covers I have looked at from this genre. I followed the theme of creating an iconic image to focus on.

Colour schemes

In terms of colour schemes i wanted to stick with something which incorporated dark colours as i think this would reflect the dark grunge AND METAL STYLE OF THE BAND. While She Sleeps usually have an element of red in their newer work; black and red can have a good impact on the audience as it is edgy and traditional, however the red resembles a new modernised feel and also makes it more striking and appealing.

The imagery used in my digipak would focus mainly on images of the band; as you can see above i have included examples of what they would look like. Images of the band recording the song are meaningful as it shows the process and hard work that goes into creating the music. This would also help the audience connect

With the band as they would feel as though they can see them on a more personal level. Linking to this i would also like to have some behind the scenes images of the band. I would also like to include artwork that the band have created themselves such as the top left image, that show their own individuality.

Page 5: A2 music video planning

On this panel of the digipack i would like to include some of the artwork/images from the band. These would mainly be in darker colours as the outside of the album is mainly white. I would like to create a contrast between the outside and inside. This is so that my digipak follows and challenges conventions as the albums from this genre are usually all dark themed. Having the contrast shows two different elements and shows that the band can be diverse.

Cover - the cover of the digipack will be the image of a skull with its brains spilling out. This image relates to the name of the album whilst still looking abstract and creative. The colour scheme of black white and pink is inspired by some of the colours used in the videos from the band. They focus on black white and red. By continuing this theme i think it relates to the artist well and also resembles the style of music as a skull is representative of death; this matches the dark and usually negative themes used in rock/metal music.

This disc would be a dvd to include in the package; it would display behind the scenes footage of the band whilst they are on tour. The DVD is an important part of the digipak as it allows the audience to get a better and more personal insight into the lives of the members in the band. The image on the disc would be a photo of the band backstage at a show as this would represent what is on the disc.

On the inside of the digipak i would like to include a small booklet that slots into one of the sides that contains lyrics to each song on the album. I think this would be a good feature as it follows conventions of existing albums and it is something that will be useful to the audience as they can take the lyrics and interpret them in their own way. Some listeners also feel that they can connect with a song more easily if they know the words. Each page would include a different image related to the band.

The back of the digipak would display the track list. This also follows conventions of existing albums and it is a useful tool so that the listener can skip to their favourite songs without trouble. The background would be white and the font would be black to make sure it is noticeable against the background. The style would be rough and edgy to match the band’s original font which i have displayed below.

The main feature of the digipak is obviously the album itself. The most important thing is the cover as this is what an audience will see first; the disc would be matching to the cover as this creates continuity through the digipak. There would be writing around the perimeter of the disc such as the band’s name etc. the image behind the disc would be a black and white image of the band.

The promotional package must also include a magazine advert for the album. Usually these types of adverts feature a picture of the album and some information about it. The advert would have the band’s name acting as a masthead at the top of the page and the name of the album underneath. It would also feature the image used on the cover of the album so people can identify it easily. The colour scheme of the advert will be the same as the album cover with a white background and black text to make it stand out.

The simplistic style allows it to look professional, yet striking and noticeable. I think the simplicity also represents how the band are not complicated and are not interested in getting too involved in the issues with the music industry and how they are now stripping back and continuing with only themselves and what they have created.I think the album should include the release date of the album so that it makes people aware of when it is available and this also builds suspense and excitement for the release. Underneath this I would like to include some quotes from music magazines such as NME or Rocksound, about the album and how good and dynamic it is. This may possibly persuade an audience to buy the album as good, well known and established companies are saying good things which would be trustworthy and people would purchase it, hoping to agree with their views. A magazine advert is a good way of providing the audience with another entry point to the album and it could also increase the audience aswell. The particular target audience that it would be aimed at are clearly people who are passionate about music; they would be more likely to buy a music magazine and therefore more likely to see the advert.

Locations

● Some studio shots● Outdoor run down

locations - most metal music videos that i watch are performances in large empty spaces such as abandoned houses or derelict areas.

Costum

props

actors

The costumes would include dark, grungy clothes for the band - e.g ripped jeans and leather jackets. The rest of the characters such as the ones who feature in the narrative will be wearing their normal everyday clothes in a range of styles to show that they are normal individuals.

The actors for the band will be all male and it would be beneficial if I could use people who have tattoos as this is something that is relevant to the metal genre and would give it an authentic feel. the re will be one male protagonist and extras used where needed for the narrative.

The main props used would be the band’s instruments such as drums and guitars. There will be a lot of focus on these during the video as the metal genre relies on being able to play an instrument and make a show out of it. Other props will include the protest placards and megaphone etc, that the main character in the narrative will hold.

Music Video Ideas

I chose this song as it is a very fast paced track which is a feature that would lend itself well to a good editing pace. I chose music which I personally like and wanted to stay away from the generic pop songs that other people may choose. This particular metal song is meaningful and raises important issues - i think this would be good for a music video as the lyrics would create a good story and give a clear topic in the video. Also, metal music videos tend to have a lot of conventions that would be easy to follow such as lots of dark imagery, close ups and live performance.

MusicGenre: Metal

Track: Brainwashed - While She Sleeps

Final idea

The final idea that i have come up with for the music video of ‘brainwashed’ relates very closely to the title. The video will consist of a lot of live performance as this is typical for a music video of this genre. This is because the song is very fast paced and relies on the band’s portrayal of energy to make the song come alive even more. The live performance shots will be taken in a deserted, run down area to match the gritty style of the song. Accompanying these shots there will be a number of close ups of the band and their instruments and it will focus mainly on the lead singer. There will also be a narrative running throughout to keep the video interesting and so that the storyline can engage with the audience. The narrative will be based on the public being ‘brainwashed’ by the government. There will be shots of news presenters and people watching the TV etc, to represent this. The story will follow a male protagonist who is protesting against their views and being frowned upon by the rest of society. As the

video progresses he gains a following of people and the video will culminate in the individuals doing different things to show their individuality and freedom.
