newsletter Proud to belong Issue 21 Summer 2017 www.thebusheyacademy.org It has been another successful year at The Bushey Academy, and this newsletter shows you just some of the wonderful things that have been happening. Since joining the school in April, I have been incredibly impressed by the opportunities given to our learners to shine both inside and outside the classroom. There is a real buzz around the place and I thank all the learners and the staff who make this happen on a daily basis. It is no surprise that once again the academy is heavily oversubscribed for the new Year 7 intake this September. The academy is dedicated to offering the best possible learning opportunities for our students and we have ensured that the last school term of this year has been eventful and stimulating. There have been so many exciting chances for students to be involved in events that have taken place in the last few months including our dazzling inhouse performance of School of Rock; our Science Fair, where students were able to showcase their projects; prom night; our student leadership elections; Proud to Belong week and a very impressive Sports Day were all among the many activities which our pupils took part in this Summer Term. We are extremely proud of the 35 students who have been presented with an ATL Award for their ‘outstanding attitude to learning’. I also attended an event hosted by The Meller Educational Trust where 10 of our Year 10 and Year 12 students received awards in categories including Aspiration, Compassion, Excellence, Conduct and Determination. As a school we are committed to inspiring, nurturing and importantly, rewarding our students to ensure that achievement and enthusiasm are recognised. As a fully inclusive, non-selective and high achieving school, we live up to our motto of ‘Proud to Belong’. The learners taking pride in their work, their appearance and themselves as young people is very important to us. We have very high expectations of all our learners but we ensure that there are also high levels of support too. That is what makes The Bushey Academy such a special place to be. May I take this opportunity to thank the learners, the staff, the parents, the governors and the MET for making the school what it is. I hope everyone connected to The Bushey Academy has a fantastic summer and I look forward to working with you all in September. On the evening of Friday June 30th the year 11s celebrated the end of their exams and their 5 years at the academy with their prom. It was a very grand affair with students arriving in vehicles ranging from BMW and Audi sports cars, a stretch Limo, a Bentley Continental and a 1963 Mercury Monterey Breezeway. The girls wore beautiful dresses and looked extremely glamorous and the boys were very handsome in their suits. The evening culminated in the crowning of Prom King and Queen, Ethan Law-Gelder and Tiffany Smith.

On Wednesday 7th July Cucina set up a Milkshake Bar which was enjoyed by staff and students. The milkshakes were a welcome relief from the hot weather and one fifth of the proceeds were donated to, New Hope Trust.

Prom Night

Shaketastic!

On Wednesday 19th July students were invited to enjoy our Turkish BBQ. Prepared and served on The Quad staff and students were able to choose from a variety of tasty BBQ dishes and salad and some very impressive Rum Baba desserts to follow.

The process for our school production of School of Rock started in January this year. Based on the hit film this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decided to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school.

A lengthy audition process helped us to discover our talented cast who would be able to play their instruments on stage. Cast and crew have worked solidly for the past seven months to put on a show that truly rocks!!

Why we are

‘Proud to belong’

Joe Cokansinga, an ex-student of the academy, who has previously represented England in the Under 21 Rugby Squad, has recently been announced in the squad for the full England side. We all wish him every success with his England career and are extremely ‘proud that he belonged’.

The Reach Free School: 19:00 Performance

The Bushey Academy was asked to participate in the local Battle of the Bands, which was a competition against schools in the local Hertfordshire area; The Reach Free School, Francis Combe, and Cavendish. We only had 72 hours to get something prepared.

Naturally, as we are working hard for “School of Rock” The Musical, we selected; “School of Rock (The Competition),” “Amazing Grace” and “Stick it to the Man.” After tough competition the judges came to a unanimous decision that we were the overall winners.

The Band members were;

Leon Morina GUITAR

Tyla Eastwood GUITAR

Bailey Robinson DRUMS

Syra Spencer-Ahmed PIANO/KEYS

Zahra Ahmadi BASS

Alice Banjo VOCALS

Congratulations to our intrepid Year 10 explorers who successfully completed their first weekend of their Duke of Edinburgh Award programme. This trip involved camping, walking and cooking for themselves in preparation for the assessed weekend and the

students showed great team work and commitment. They were supported by a great team of staff and all those involved agreed that it was a thoroughly successful and enjoyable experience.

July 11th 2017 marked the Bushey Academy’s second annual Science Fair! This year it was 7A3 that took part. The students had 2 months to conceive, develop and demonstrate their own scientific ideas. With no help from teachers, the students developed presentations and methods to test their very own hypothesis and carry out the experiments at home.

The winners are as follows:

Best presentation – Roman Cody & Myles Huie

Best scientific principle- Aliesha Hussain

Overall winners – Sienna Cross, Francesca Lobbi & Andrew Gordon

Honourable mentions for their outstanding work go to:

Holly GalletlySanyu Njuki & Lara HonorJermaine Forde

All students should be thoroughly proud of themselves, as we in the academy are of them.

In collaboration with our caterers, Cucina, Year 9 Catering students at The Bushey Academy were recently given the opportunity to design a themed menu for the restaurant, with the winning students also being given the opportunity to make and sell their own dishes to students and staff. We received a high number of exceptionally creative and high quality entries from students which made deciding

on the winning entry almost impossible to judge. However, a decision was finally reached and the students with the winning themed menu were Holly White and Emma Green. Their Space themed menu included Alien Cupcakes, Meteoroid Spaghetti, fruit and Marshmallow Rockets & Cheesy Stars and went down extremely well with all the staff and students.

On Thursday 22nd June, Head Chef Calvin Hill and Head Pastry Chef Reece Collier from The Grove worked with Year 10 GCSE Catering students. Students were shown a demonstration of how to make the prefect pastry before being asked to create their own. Students had to individually make sweet shortcrust and savoury shortcrust pastry with various fillings. The chefs supported the student’s to hone their skills and techniques resulting in some outstanding restaurant quality dishes being produced. Thank you to the Chefs from The Grove for supporting our students, who clearly enjoyed and benefited from the experience.
