The Schinkel Church in Straupitz is a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture designed by Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Modelled after an Ancient Roman basilica, the church was con- structed between 1828 and 1932 and is still to this day considered one of the cultural highlights of the Spreewald region. The church is open to visitors from May to October (11 am to noon & 3 pm to 4 pm). The Peitz ponds are home to the ironworks and fishery museum, as well an exhibition of min- erals and fossils. The furnace halls are unique, as is the 19th-century foundry, which is still functioning in part today. Spanning over 200 m², the fishery museum houses a pond diorama, an aquarium, and exhibits from Peitz’s long-standing traditions of pond farming and carp breeding. The traditional ‘Klemmkuchen’ baking is especially popular with visitors, as are the demonstrations of pewter working in the foundry. The present day Kanow Mill [Kanow-Mühle] was bought at auction by Christian Kahnow from ‘Nowa Niwa/Neu Zauche’ (formerly Kanno Mill) in 1815. The mill evolved from the 13th-century ‘Wushack Mill’, which lay in the Wendish village Zagorica (the settlement behind the hill). The original water mill is still in operation today and can be visited during opening hours. This is also where the finest and tastiest linseed oil is pressed and sold on the farm. Head on a journey back in time and see the Spree- wald town as it was 150 years ago, when exotic products such as coffee, cocoa and spices were stocked on the shelves of its general stores. Historical shops and craft workshops, ranging from the furrier to the shoemak- er, bring the 19th century back to life. In addition, the Spreewald- bahn narrow-gauge railway is sure to delight technology fans! Take over the driver’s cab of locomotive no 995703 and make yourself comfortable in the second-class compartment dating from 1893. The water playground with rafts, canals, excava- tors and a waterfall is a magnet for children. They can be a pirate or, like Archimedes, pump water using a screw, operate locks, or simply splash around to their heart’s content – a true paradise for water lovers. Parents and grandparents can admire the artworks made of mud while relaxing on the greenery of the Schlossinsel. South-east of Berlin is a unique landscape in Cen- tral Europe – the UNESCO Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The special attraction of the Spreewald lies in its park-like landscape which is criss-crossed by numerous rivers and streams. The Spreewald is a habitat that is rich in flora and fauna. In 1990 it was declared a biosphere reserve, and in 1991 was awarded UNESCO status. The unusual mix of a mediaeval defence tower, an imposing heraldic hall and a renaissance castle give some indication as to the eventful history of the complex. Inside, the old royal seat comes back to life thanks to modern technology. Seeing, liste- ning, touching and participating are all encouraged here. Visitors hear their ancestors speak and listen to choral music, while the castle’s treasures lie at their feet. This natural residual lowland forest in the town centre is particularly impressive with its rare vegetation and its around 220 oak trees up to 30 metres in height. It links Lübben’s different neighbourhoods, and with its winding paths and beautiful spots is an ideal place in which to stroll and linger. The LiUBA Stone marks the spot of a Slavic place of worship. At one time the Wends worshipped the love goddess LiUBA here beneath the sacred oak by praying and making sacrifices to her. 20th century art-nouveau at its finest. Over 2,000 lamps burn in “Europe’s most beautiful art- nouveau theatre”, built in 1908 on Schillerplatz, giving it a very special flair. Guided tours and the staged operas, ballets, dramas and concerts allow visitors to experience its fabulous atmosphere and admire the jewel that the citizens of Cottbus created at the heart of their city more than 100 years ago. The steeple of the late Gothic hall church has welco- med visitors to the town for centuries, and its name- sake is found in ecclesiastical and secular songbooks worldwide. It has a lavish interior, with leaded win- dows by well-known contemporaries of Gerhardt that incorporate hymn verses. Because of this, the church is known internationally as the “Lied Church”. Visitors who climb the tower with the tower keeper will learn more about the church and enjoy a fantastic view. In the 19th century, Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau (1785-1871) created a landscape park in the English style in Branitz. The lake pyramid, called the Tumulus, is the prince’s burial place. The late baroque castle, with its partially-original interiors offers a largely authentic impression of princely life. The restored salons rank among the finest examples of aristocratic interior decoration. In addition to the landscape park spanning over 22 acres, the Lübbenau castle ensemble features historic buildings such as the castle itself, the mews, the orangery, and the chancellery. The estate has belonged to the family of the Count of Lynar since 1621. Boasting 62 rooms, suites, and apartments, as well as the LINARI castle restaurant and ROCCO’S bar, the ensemble is one of the most popular travel destinations for day trippers and holidaymakers looking to combine culture with nature. The Spreewelten baths are an all-round experience. Swim with real Humboldt penguins as they shoot through the water, separated from the guests only by giant panorama glass windows. Or visit the remark- able sauna area to leave your worries behind in a new world somewhere between rustic Spreewald flair and intoxicating sensations. Either way, you’ll want to stay at the Spreewelten baths! And since March 2019, you can spend the night—at the courtyard-style Spreewelten Hotel. Here the focus is firmly on relaxation: A cosy atmosphere, modern ambience, warmth and tranquillity ensure a relaxing stay at the heart of the UNESCO Spree- wald Biosphere Reserve. The Spreewald Therme is a brine-thermal bath complex as could only be found in the Spreewald. With its uni- que architecture, the complex easily blends into the landscape. The valuable thermal brine arises from a depth of 1,350 meters directly beneath it in Burg. The thermal, spa, sauna and fitness offers are all authentically and unmistakably connected to the Spreewald. The towers, gates and guard houses mark out the layout of the old town. The Münz and Spremberg towers stand at each end of the 1,200-m-long section of the old fortifications. The Spremberg Tower, the city’s landmark, was built in the 13th century and together with the bastion and gatehouse forms the southern gate. The pin- nacle crown was added in 1823-25 according to plans by Schinkel. The Spremberg Tower is 31 metres high and is open to visitors. Situated in the heart of the town, the island beautifully combines trees, nature and culture. Imaginative hiking trails and adventure areas such as a labyrinth, sound garden, climbing pyra- mid and lawn terraces invite visitors to stroll and linger. For events such as the Lübben Punt Nights or the Island Music Summer, the Schlossinsel provides the perfect natural setting for open-air music, dance, theatre and artistry. Calau is the birthplace of the “Kalauer” or “pun”, as in the 19th century the shoemakers who worked here used to churn out jokes and delight in the am- biguity of words. These puns spread far and wide, not least thanks to Ernst Dohm, who published them in his satirical magazine “Kladderadatsch”. As a re- sult, the term “Kalauer” established itself in the German langua- ge as the word for “pun” and remains in use today. The Calauer Schusterjungen (Calau Cobbler Boys) invite you to explore the town and follow in the footsteps of the former shoemakers. More than 1,200 animals of 170 different species and genera live in the magnificent parkland on the Spree river. Elephants, tigers, leopards, lynx, coatis, various monkeys, zebras, antelopes, ostriches, tapirs and a wealth of wading birds and waterfowl can all be seen here. A large domestic animal area, complete with a petting zoo and several playgrounds, is just waiting to be dis- covered. The small park steam train stops directly outside the zoo. Located between the Hauptspree and the cycling and hiking trails on the Spree- damm, the SpreeLagune with its canoe resting place, bathing area, climbing net bridge and raft crossing offers active recreation in and on the water. The Schlossinsel and town centre can be reached in just a few minutes via the longest wooden bridge in the Spreewald (barrier-free). Swimming and sunbathing in the bathing area round off the fun and relaxation to be had in the green town of Lübben. The 27m-high lookout tower on the fabled Schloss- berg, a pre- and protohistoric rampart, was built in 1915–17. It offers a wide view of the Spreewald land- scape, and as Burg’s landmark is a popular excursion destination. The unique setting of the Schlossberg, which is surrounded by enchanting natural scenery, is the scene for exceptional events such as the “Spreewald Night of Fables” and the ”Night of the Pumpkin Ghosts”, with impressive lighting and pyrotechnical effects. (Apr.-Oct. daily 10 am to 6 pm) Experience nature with all your senses in the Schlossberghof herb farm. Here, you can see real Spreewald herbs and crops at every stage of their life, from cultivation in the herb garden through to their use in special delicacies at the ‘Spreewälder Kräutermanufaktur’ herb studio. Stop by the information centre to discover interesting facts about the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve or visit the ‘Nature Experience Clock’ to test all your senses. There are also regular, scheduled visits to a typical Spreewald farmhouse, known as the ‘Annemarie Schulz House’, which was built in 1726. Once the main market place and originally sur- rounded with half-timbered houses, the Altmarkt today is an impressive ensemble of Saxon-baroque town houses and 18th-/19th-century traditional eaved buildings. The Pharmacy Museum, housed in the 400-year-old Löwenapotheke, features pharmacy fittings from the 19th and 20th centuries, herb and poison chambers and medicine cellars. The Centre for Human Rights Cottbus runs the memorial prison, which was formerly the largest and most notorious political prison in East Germany. The exhibition entitled “Checked clouds: Political imprisonment in the Cottbus prison 1933 – 1989” shows typical examples of political injustice from the time of the Nazi reign of terror and the Communist dictatorship period, including reconstructed cells from different decades. “Dissen would just be a normal village if it weren’t for the many stork nests, the beautiful half- timbered church and the marvellous local-history museum ...”, wrote a journalist once. Dissen in fact has other interesting sights, including Stary Lud – a Slavic Middle Ages settlement, the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Garden, and the rehabilitated Spree flood-plain, which can also be explored on guided bike tours. Beneath the Schlossberg, the construction of an artificial moat resulted in the creation of an island, which still bears the name of Mühlen- insel (Mill Island) today. In 1902/03, the first power station in Cottbus was built on the site of the Stadtmühle, which burnt down in 1882. In 1927/28, the diesel power plant was built as a second power source. The Heimatstube Burg is a small but impressive museum housed in a thatched log cabin typical of the Spreewald. It provides an interesting insight into Burg, its history and its legends, including church history, traditional crafts, and Sorbian/Wendish customs and costumes. Another permanent exhibition tells the story of the Spreewald narrow-gauge railway. At the traditional Heimatstube Festival in September, tradi- tion and history are brought to life in the Dreiseitenhof next to the port. Open: Easter-Oct.: Wed-Sun 1 pm to 5 pm; Nov-Mar: Wed-Fri noon to 4 pm. The Schinkel Church in Straupitz is a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture designed by Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Modelled after an Ancient Roman basilica, the church was con-structed between 1828 and 1932 and is still to this day considered one of the cultural highlights of the Spreewald region. The church is open to visitors from May to October (11 am to noon & 3 pm to 4 pm).

The Peitz ponds are home to the ironworks and fi shery museum, as well an exhibition of min-erals and fossils. The furnace halls are unique, as is the 19th-century foundry, which is still functioning in part today. Spanning over 200 m², the fi shery museum houses a pond diorama, an aquarium, and exhibits from Peitz’s long-standing traditions of pond farming and carp breeding.

This is also where the fi nest and tastiest linseed oil is pressed and sold on the farm.

Head on a journey back in time and see the Spree-wald town as it was 150 years ago, when exotic prod ucts such as coffee, cocoa and spices were stocked on the shelves of its general stores. Historical shops and craft workshops, ranging from the furrier to the shoemak-er, bring the 19th century back to life. In addition, the Spree wald-bahn narrow-gauge railway is sure to delight technology fans! Take over the driver’s cab of locomotive no 995703 and make yourself comfortable in the second-class compartment dating from 1893.

The water playground with rafts, canals, excava-tors and a waterfall is a magnet for children. They can be a pirate or, like Archimedes, pump water using a screw, operate locks, or simply splash around to their heart’s content – a true paradise for water lovers. Parents and grandparents can admire the artworks made of mud while relaxing on the greenery of the Schlossinsel.

South-east of Berlin is a unique landscape in Cen-tral Europe – the UNESCO Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The special attraction of the Spreewald lies in its park-like landscape which is criss-crossed by numerous rivers and streams. The Spreewald is a habitat that is rich in fl ora and fauna.

Seeing, liste-ning, touching and participating are all encouraged here. Visitors hear their ancestors speak and listen to choral music, while the castle’s treasures lie at their feet.

This natural residual lowland forest in the town centre is particularly impressive with its rare vegetation and its around 220 oak trees up to 30 metres in height. It links Lübben’s different neigh bourhoods, and with its winding paths and beautiful spots is an ideal place in which to stroll and linger. The LiUBA Stone marks the spot of a Slavic place of worship. At one time the Wends worshipped the love goddess LiUBA here beneath the sacred oak by praying and making sacrifi ces to her.

20th century art-nouveau at its fi nest. Over 2,000 lamps burn in “Europe’s most beautiful art-nouveau theatre”, built in 1908 on Schillerplatz, giving it a very special fl air. Guided tours and the staged operas, ballets, dramas and concerts allow visitors to experience its fabulous atmosphere and admire the jewel that the citizens of Cottbus created at the heart of their city more than 100 years ago.

The steeple of the late Gothic hall church has welco-med visitors to the town for centuries, and its name-sake is found in ecclesiastical and secular songbooks worldwide. It has a lavish interior, with leaded win-dows by well-known contemporaries of Gerhardt that incorporate hymn verses.

The restored salons rank among the fi nest examples of aristocratic interior decoration.

Or visit the remark-able sauna area to leave your worries behind in a new world somewhere between rustic Spreewald fl air and intoxicating sensations. Either way, you’ll want to stay at the Spreewelten baths! And since March 2019, you can spend the night—at the courtyard-style Spreewelten Hotel.

Here the focus is fi rmly on relaxation: A cosy atmosphere, modern ambience, warmth and tranquillity ensure a relaxing stay at the heart of the UNESCO Spree-wald Biosphere Reserve. The Spreewald Therme is a brine-thermal bath complex as could only be found in the Spreewald. With its uni-que architecture, the complex easily blends into the landscape. The valuable thermal brine arises from a depth of 1,350 meters directly beneath it in Burg. The thermal, spa, sauna and fi tness offers are all authentically and unmistakably connected to the Spreewald.

The towers, gates and guard houses mark out the layout of the old town. The Münz and Spremberg towers stand at each end of the 1,200-m-long section of the old fortifi cations. The Spremberg Tower, the city’s landmark, was built in the 13th century and together with the bastion and gatehouse forms the southern gate. The pin-nacle crown was added in 1823-25 according to plans by Schinkel. The Spremberg Tower is 31 metres high and is open to visitors.

Situated in the heart of the town, the island beautifully combines trees, nature and culture. Imaginative hiking trails and adventure areas such as a labyrinth, sound garden, climbing pyra-mid and lawn terraces invite visitors to stroll and linger. For events such as the Lübben Punt Nights or the Island Music Summer, the Schlossinsel provides the perfect natural setting for open-air music, dance, theatre and artistry.

Calau is the birthplace of the “Kalauer” or “pun”, as in the 19th century the shoemakers who worked here used to churn out jokes and delight in the am-biguity of words. These puns spread far and wide, not least thanks to Ernst Dohm, who published them in his satirical magazine “Kladderadatsch”. As a re-sult, the term “Kalauer” established itself in the German langua-ge as the word for “pun” and remains in use today. The Calauer Schusterjungen (Calau Cobbler Boys) invite you to explore the town and follow in the footsteps of the former shoemakers.

More than 1,200 animals of 170 different species and genera live in the magnifi cent parkland on the Spree river. Elephants, tigers, leopards, lynx, coatis, various monkeys, zebras, antelopes, ostriches, tapirs and a wealth of wading birds and waterfowl can all be seen here. A large domestic animal area, complete with a petting zoo and several playgrounds, is just waiting to be dis-covered. The small park steam train stops directly outside the zoo.

Located between the Hauptspree and the cycling and hiking trails on the Spree-damm, the SpreeLagune with its canoe resting place, bathing area, climbing net bridge and raft crossing offers active recreation in and on the water. The Schlossinsel and town centre can be reached in just a few minutes via the longest wooden bridge in the Spreewald (barrier-free). Swimming and sunbathing in the bathing area round off the fun and relaxation to be had in the green town of Lübben.

The 27m-high lookout tower on the fabled Schloss-berg, a pre- and protohistoric rampart, was built in 1915–17. It offers a wide view of the Spreewald land-scape, and as Burg’s landmark is a popular excursion destination. The unique setting of the Schlossberg, which is surrounded by enchanting natural scenery, is the scene for exceptional events such as the “Spreewald Night of Fables” and the ”Night of the Pumpkin Ghosts”, with impressive lighting and pyrotechnical effects. (Apr.-Oct. daily 10 am to 6 pm)

Experience nature with all your senses in the Schlossberghof herb farm.

Once the main market place and originally sur-rounded with half-timbered houses, the Altmarkt today is an impressive ensemble of Saxon-baroque town houses and 18th-/19th-century traditional eaved buildings. The Pharmacy Museum, housed in the 400-year-old Löwenapotheke, features pharmacy fi ttings from the 19th and 20th centuries, herb and poison chambers and medicine cellars.

“Dissen would just be a normal village if it weren’t for the many stork nests, the beautiful half-timbered church and the marvellous local-history museum ...”, wrote a journalist once. Dissen in fact has other interesting sights, including Stary Lud – a Slavic Middle Ages settlement, the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Garden, and the rehabilitated Spree fl ood-plain, which can also be explored on guided bike tours.

Beneath the Schlossberg, the construction of an artifi cial moat resulted in the creation of an island, which still bears the name of Mühlen-insel (Mill Island) today. In 1902/03, the fi rst power station in Cottbus was built on the site of the Stadtmühle, which burnt down in 1882.

At the traditional Heimatstube Festival in September, tradi-tion and history are brought to life in the Dreiseitenhof next to the port. Open: Easter-Oct.: Wed-Sun 1 pm to 5 pm; Nov-Mar: Wed-Fri noon to 4 pm.

Luckau, fi rst mentioned in 1276, became one of Lower Lusatia’s capitals in 1492. The city features spacious gardens and parks created for the 2000 State Horticul-tural Show as well as a lovingly restored historical centre surrounded by an 1800-m-long wall. The George Chapel, the neoclassical town hall, buildings with magnifi cent renaissance gables, and the Nikolai Church all bear witness to the city’s eventful history documented in the Niederlausitz Museum.

Fürstlich Drehna is fi rst mentioned in docu-ments dating from 1477. Fürstlich Drehna is a moated castle, and was originally a mediaeval fortress that after 1560 was expanded into the current four-wing building. The park was laid out from 1807 onwards under P.J. Lenne. Expanded in 1877, in 1984 it was partially destroyed by lignite opencast mining. Today, old and new have been successfully merged to create a horticul-tural show-piece.

In Brandenburg’s oldest open-air mu-seum you can fi nd out about life in the Spreewald in the 19th century. Museum staff greet guests in typical Spreewald costumes and guide them around four historic farms from different regions of the Spreewald. Visitors can take a look inside originally decorated farmhouses, see a family bed that really was big enough for an entire family, learn fascinating details about historic crafts, or call in at the oldest punt-maker in the Spreewald

In the hands-on areas in the open-air museum, the entire family can try their hand at old-fashioned chores that used to be part of everyday life, including washing sheets at the washbasin using soap and a washboard. In the cowshed, town and city children can have a go at milking, or walking in wooden clogs. Skipping-ropes and stilts were popular 100 years ago, and the hay-bed is the perfect place for a lie-down.

The Raddusch Slavic Fort is a replica 9th/10th-century early-mediaeval fortress belonging to the Slavic Lusizi tribe. Externally a faithful archaeological reconstruction, inside it houses a fascinating exhibition on more than 12,000 years of Lower Lusatia history. Finds from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages are presented in a modern way. Special exhibitions, a large outside area with playgrounds and a ‘time-platform’, and a restaurant and castle-shop mean that there is something for everyone.

The impressive fortress tower in the historic old town has walls up to six metres thick and massive barrel vaults. This was the main building in the old castle complex and later the general tower in the fortress of Hans von Küstrin. Today, it is home to a museum featuring the history of the fortress. A multimedia exhibition complete with talking fi gures and an interactive table reveals how the fortress in Peitz was constructed, while the banqueting hall is used for concerts, weddings and other celebrations. You can even venture up the baroque turrets for spectacular vistas from a height of around 35 metres.

In the Wendish era, the castle of the Wendish Prince Wussilo, who remains a legendary fi gure to this day, was situated in Schlepzig/Słopišïa. In 1374, Hans Schenbub was named owner of an iron hammer works for the production of bog iron ore and poured the slag on the site of the castle. In 1788, a guest house was built on top of the slag, complete with a tavern licence and brewing and distilling rights. Today, the brewmaster brews ‘Spreewälder Pils’ (Pilsner), ‘Spree-walder Dunkel’ (dark beer), ‘Zwickel’ (cloudy lager), Hefeweizen (hand-brewed, unfi ltered wheat beer), and ‘Maibock’ (pale lager).
