TWO OR THREE YEARS? At Edmonton County we know that not all young people are ready to pass the Level 3 threshold at the same age. As adults, parents and teachers, we have the experience to know that at certain times in our lives, for a range of reasons, it can take a little longer than other people to achieve our goals. Sixth Form education is changing. Many students will start their Level 3 programme of study in Year 12 and complete it by the end of Year 13. For an increasing number though it may take 3 years to complete their studies. Edmonton County sees every young person as an individual and we will guide you to the right pathway to enable you to achieve at a rate that has appropriate challenge, yet is right for you and will ensure success.

Choosing the right course is important if you are to enjoy your time in the Sixth Form and be successful. In thinking about what courses best suit you, consider the following questions carefully:

What subjects do I enjoy? Do I want to continue studying a current subject in more depth or do I want to try something new? How do I prefer being assessed – coursework, exams or a mixture of both? How do I learn best – through a more theoretical route or more vocationally applied route linked to the world of work? Am I good at working independently or will I need closer support and guidance? What career or Higher Education Pathway do I want to follow in the future?

Meeting Targets & Home Study

All Sixth Form students are expected to meet challenging targets. Students are permitted to study at home when they do not have lessons provided they enter and leave the campus during break and lunch times. Students who get ‘U’ grades may be denied this privilege. There is an expectation that no students will be predicted ‘U’ grades in their subjects by the end of the first term. Students predicted ’U’ grades in two subjects at this time will be strongly advised to leave the 6th Form.

It is the school's policy not to enter students for retakes or ask for papers to be remarked - students should take examinations expecting to succeed, not presuming there will be a second or even third chance. If students feel they could have done better at the end of the first year of the course, they should apply every effort to balance this out with improved grades in the second year, rather than taking their eye off the ball by retaking units already achieved.

WORKING TOGETHER IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE STUDENT The following framework forms the foundation of day to day study in the 6th Form In the 6th Form we will support each person:- as a student following examination courses as a prospective employee or student in higher education as a role model to other students and the wider community as a young adult taking a full and active part within and beyond the school community As students you will be expected to:- maintain full attendance and punctuality to school, lessons, mentoring and assemblies maintain a course of independent study at school and home that ensures you meet aspirational

grades and includes registration during study periods. wear an ID badge at all times and follow procedures when signing in and out of school attend assemblies, enrichment and other occasional activities as required, which form part of

your programme of study dress in a manner which is not offensive to common decency or to our diverse school

community behave as an appropriate role model to all other students, working with staff to ensure a positive

learning environment for all in the 6th Form and the rest of the school avoid more than 5 hours of paid work per week Arrange appointments or job interviews outside of school time with the exception of specialist or

hospital appointments return to school with a note from home explaining why you have been absent

As part of the team parents will aim to support students by:-

taking an active interest in the course of study

ensuring full attendance and punctuality at school

monitoring independent study at home

attending parents’ evenings, mentoring sessions when invited and other information giving events

The Daily Routine As with Year 11, lessons start at 8.40am and students must be on site by 8:30am. Aside from formal lessons all students are also required to attend all tutoring/mentoring sessions and assemblies on a weekly basis. The time with your tutor is a vital part of a 6th Former’s education as it provides the forum for sharing the learning experience and providing the immediate support that a student may need. Assemblies provide a vital opportunity for all of the house group to be together for the sharing of information as well as an opportunity for a range of speakers on topics relevant to 6th Formers. On a practical level there is so much going on for groups and individual students that it is vital that the Head of House, Student Manager and Student Leadership Team are able to consult students and pass on information. Outside of lesson times all students will have unsupervised study periods for the completion of homework, coursework and independent study. Homework - this is work that is teacher directed and most often required to be completed by a set date usually the next lesson. The homework will either support what has been covered in the lesson or be tasks that will ensure that students are able to access information covered in the next lesson. In some instances the homework will be preliminary work toward undertaking coursework.

LIFE IN THE SIXTH FORM

Page 12: 6th Form Prospectus 2011 - Edmonton County · PDF fileBTEC Nationals in Applied Science 34 ... Nationals 3 A2/BTEC Nationals Higher Education/ ... You will be offered a place in Edmonton

12

Coursework – for most students the completion of coursework will be a significant part of completing their courses. Most subjects require at least one piece of extended work that is externally examined. For those students undertaking Vocational & Applied Level 2/3 courses the coursework component is far more extensive. Independent Study – one of the most striking differences between Year 11 and 12 is the requirement that students are able to work on their own to complete extra reading and research that has not been directly set by the teacher although guidance will be given. All students are required to maintain a regular revision programme including revising all lessons within the week that they have been taught. At break and lunchtimes students are welcome and indeed encouraged to socialise and relax in the Common Rooms. During lesson times the common rooms should be used for independent study.

Educational Maintenance Allowance – EMA The Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is going to be replaced by an enhanced discretionary learner support fund. Decisions about which young people should receive financial support will be made by schools, colleges, and training providers who are in a better position than Government to determine the needs of individual students. This new fund will be better able to target those young people who face a real financial barrier to participation.

Communications with Parents

Academic monitoring and communication with parents forms the foundation for the academic success of all students. The following methods are employed to facilitate positive relationships between staff, students and parents. Profiles issued 4 times a year Parents Information Evenings Parent/Teacher Evenings Telephone calls from subject Teachers and tutors Head of House /Student Manager and Senior Leadership Team meetings when necessary Head of House /Student Manager telephone contact with home Regular written communications direct with parents Lates and absence letters/telephone calls home Parents are invited to telephone the 6

th Form staff during any school day to discuss issues concerning

their child or to arrange an appointment.

The main thing to remember with your study at 6th Form Level is that you must start the way you intend to continue – to reach your targets and achieve top grades takes a lot of consistent hard work and determination. The level and depth of study in class is much greater and right from the beginning of the year independent study will be central to all your subjects.

Central to developing independent, motivated life long learners is knowing what the next academic step is. Researching and applying to colleges, universities, the public services or toward employment is a formal part of the 6th Form Programme. All students are required to take part in the following activities and events: Parents Evening Higher Education and Employment Fair providing general progression information as well as information from specific colleges and universities, armed services, support services and modern apprenticeships. Professional Workshops to support the University Central Applications Services (UCAS) process Information on University and College Open Days. Professional Finance workshops Practice interviews with School Governors Ongoing information and support from Tutors and Student Managers

Careers Information

The school library contains a range of resources which give information about careers: Books on various job areas Life Facts folders contain detailed information about a very wide range of specific jobs The computers have the Kudos & Key Clips programmes, which both give information and help you find careers that might be suitable for your talents & interests On the notice board above the Learning Resource Base computers is a list of useful careers related websites Our Careers Advisor, Ms Morgan and Work Related Learning Co-ordinator, Ms Hughes, are also happy to answer general queries at break & lunchtimes or by appointment.

Life in the 6th Form – From our Students’ Perspective

6th Form is a great place to learn about life and growing up

When starting 6th Form expect a complete change from life in Year 11. There is still the comfort of being around the teachers that you know and who know you, your skills, capabilities and the way you like to learn, but there is also more freedom to do what you want to do. You will be studying with a group of students who have chosen that subject because they want to and so you gain so much more from lessons. Classes are generally smaller than at GCSE, which means more time with your teachers, more opportunities for discussions, and a lot more independent study! The hardest thing about the transition is being able to make the best use of your study periods. The standard and volume of work that is required by teachers is a lot more than at Key Stage 4 and it’s sometimes not until exam results come in that reality comes into focus so my advice is work hard right from the start – it will be so important later. Our 6th Form offers great opportunities for you as a student; there is a wide range of volunteering options available. There are many events organised and you also have the option of becoming a leader, or even a member of the Head Girl/Boy team, which gives students a chance to make the most of the school, and have a say in the decisions that are made. Socially, there are a lot of changes as well: you change classes and speak to people you’ve never spoken to before, everyone is more equal. The whole 6th Form socialises as one large group rather than small friendship groups, creating a great, fun and very friendly atmosphere. Staying on at 6th Form is something that most students feel is right for them, as you are guided through the courses you do, in preparation for life after school. There is so much support from teachers in which decisions you make, whether you want to go on to university, take a gap year or start working straight away, helping you to achieve what you want from life.

“We are really lucky here as we have great facilities – probably because of the Technology status I think, I have always been able to get on a computer to get everything done.”

“I think it is a really good environment. The amount of support we get is really good and all the students get along really well. I’m really enjoying it.”

“There is a lot more freedom in the 6th Form, it has given me the chance to study the way that I want to.”

Enrichment

Ours is a 6th Form Community – academic achievement is the foundation and central to everything that we do but we also believe that students should leave Edmonton County with the broader skills to be successful in all aspects of their lives. Our Student Leadership Team is a very active one that shows considerable initiative in organising a number of activities and events:

Leadership around both sites Community Winter Festival Assemblies End of Year Celebration Fund raising for Charities Supporting younger students in class

Students are also able to take part in regular volunteering in partnership with Youth Action Volunteering Enfield (YAVE). Placements are arranged for students with certification at the end of the completion of 15 hours of volunteering.

The 6th Form is always a busy place. Students have many and varied opportunities to take a wider role in the day to day running of the 6th Form. All these experiences become very important when students begin the process of writing personal statements for college, university or job applications.

At Edmonton County we know that for a student to be successful in their adult life, they not only need academic success but must also be able to demonstrate a broader range of skills such as teamwork, independence, initiative and resilience. We encourage students to help out in the school community. For the majority this will include helping in class with students lower down the school. We are keen for the students to come up with their own ideas too, so if you have a suggestion for how you can work within our school or wider community, please discuss it with the 6th form leadership team. Most importantly, it also looks great on your UCAS application and CV that you are more than just a set of grades!
