President's Report

The upsurge in interest in family history was reflected in the large attendance at the meeting held on Monday, 5th October, at the Foyle Street Library of the Society's new Foyle Branch in

'Derry, when 120 people turned up to hear my talk on how to trace family history. An article had

appeared in the Derry Journal and Mary Delargy and I had been interviewed by Simon Brett on B.B.C. Radio Foyle. On the night, we were graced by the presence of the Mayor; however the

room proved too small and we had to turn away 50 people but we plan to repeat the talk.

On Saturday, 3rd October, the Society was represented by Ann Robinson, Syl Maguire, Audrey Higginbottom, Christine McCafferty, Pat Allen and myself at a Family History Day held in Lisburn

City Library. We were amazed when 450 people turned up. We had our display stand and handed out leaflets about the Society and gave free advice.

The National Archives in Dublin have finally released free on the internet the 1911 census for all 32 counties of Ireland and plan to have the 1901 census available towards the end of the year or

early 2010. I was invited as President of N.I.F.H.S. to take part with Sarah Travers on B.B.C.

Television Northern Ireland on Newsline at prime viewing time to talk about the 1911 census -

this helped to bring the existence of the Society to a large audience.

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland [PRONI] recently launched free on the internet 30 Belfast and Ulster Street Directories covering the years 1819-1900. Some of these pre-partition directories include Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal. Our readers will please note that PRONI

will be closed from October 2010 to May 2011 as it moves to new premises in the Titanic Quarter so visitors planning research trips to Belfast should bear these dates in mind.

Please note the Society now has PayPal available on the website and we hope this will make it easier and cheaper for our overseas members to pay their subscriptions in their local currency.
