The Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of
worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
First - The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
Second - High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition
of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each
Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
Third - The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal,
business, and community life; and
Fourth - The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and
peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united
in the ideal of service.
Avenues of Service
Based on the Object of Rotary, the Avenues of Service are Rotary’s philosophical
cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:
Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club.
Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.
Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.
International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace.
New Generations Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects, and exchange programs.
The Four-Way Test
The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following
questions:
Of the things we think, say or do
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Mission
The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity,
and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of
business, professional, and community leaders.
Diversity and Rotary
Rotary International recognizes the value of diversity within individual clubs. Rotary
encourages clubs to assess those in their communities who are eligible for
membership, under existing membership guidelines, and to endeavor to include the
appropriate range of individuals in their clubs. A club that reflects its community with
regard to professional and business classification, gender, age, religion, and ethnicity
is a club with the key to its future.
Strategic priorities and goals
The revised strategic plan, effective 1 July 2010, identifies three strategic priorities
supported by 16 goals. Rotary International recognizes the value of diversity within
individual clubs.
Support and Strengthen Clubs
Foster club innovation and flexibility
Encourage clubs to participate in a variety of service activities
Promote membership diversity
Improve member recruitment and retention
Develop leaders
Start new, dynamic clubs
Encourage strategic planning at club and district levels
Focus and Increase Humanitarian Service
Eradicate polio
Increase sustainable service focused on: -New Generations Service programs -The Rotary Foundation's six areas of focus
Increase collaboration and connection with other organizations
Create significant projects both locally and internationally

Paul Percival Harris
1868 - 1947
First President,
National & International
Association of Rotary Clubs 1910
Paul Percival Harris, the founder of Rotary was born in Racine,
Wisconsin, USA on 19 April 1868. Paul was the second of six
children to George N Harris and Cornelia Bryan Harris. A man
with varied knowledge and experience, he received a Bachelor of Physical Culture and
honorary LL D degree from the University of Vermont and LL B from the University of
Iowa.
Paul Harris worked as a newspaper reporter, a business teacher, an actor in a stock
company, a cowboy and as a salesman for a marble and granite concern before finally
settling in Chicago in 1896 to practise law. In July 1910, he married Jean Thomson, a
Scottish girl and a co-member in Chicago Prairie Club.
One evening Paul went with a friend to his suburban home. After dinner, as they strolled
through the neighbourhood, Paul’s friend greeted by name various tradesmen at their
stores. This reminded Paul of his New England village and it occurred to him “Why not in
Chicago have a fellowship composed of just one man from each of many different
occupations, without restriction as to their politics or religion, with broad tolerance of
each other’s opinion. In such a fellowship could there not be mutual helpfulness?”
On 23 February 1905, Paul Harris formed the first club with three young businessmen:
Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant; Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer and Hiram
Shorey, a tailor. Paul Harris was the first President of the National Association of Rotary
Clubs (in 1910) and also of the International Association of Rotary Clubs – (the name
later changed to Rotary International) in the year 1912. Paul was active in Rotary until his
death on 27 January 1947.
Today the seed he sowed in 1905 has blossomed into a large tree covering 168
countries with over 32,000 clubs with a membership of 1.2 million Rotarians world-wide.

RI World President 2012-13
SAKUJI TANAKA (Kyoko) Yashio, Saitama, JAPAN
Trustee, The Rotary Foundation, 2006-10
Director, Rotary International, 2003-05
District Governor, 1994-95
Sakuji Tanaka was chair of the Daika Company and president of the National Household
Papers Distribution Association of Japan. He also has been vice president of the Yashio City
Chamber of Commerce. A member of the Rotary Club of Yashio since its charter in 1975, he
has served RI as a director; Rotary Foundation trustee; committee member and chair,
including chair of the 2009 Birmingham Convention Committee; regional Rotary Foundation
coordinator; district governor; and training leader. Working with his district, he has helped to
construct a school building in Bangladesh. Sakuji has received the RI Service Above Self
Award and the Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service
Award. He and his wife, Kyoko, are Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors of the Permanent Fund,
Major Donors, and members of the Arch C. Klumph Society. In addition, Sakuji has
established an endowed Rotary Peace Fellowship. Sakuji and Kyoko have been married
since 1963. They live in Yashio and have three children and six grandchildren.
Dear fellow Rotarians,
Rotary has been part of my life for many years. I became a Rotarian almost by accident. I did not know anything
about Rotary when I was invited to join. But I respected the person who invited me, so I accepted. Now, I see
Service Above Self as a way of life. It means that no individual can live by himself, alone. We are always in a
community. At home, at school, at work, and in our countries—we share our lives with others. It is human and
natural to want to share our lives. Whether we are happy or sad, facing success or difficulty, we want to know that
we have others close by. And as much as we want other people to be there for us, we each have a need to be
there for others. When we serve our communities—when we go to teach someone a skill, to help paint a house,
to participate in an NID—we become more fully involved in our communities. We build connections with others;
we give of ourselves. And in doing this, we work toward our real goal: a world of greater happiness, greater
contentment, and greater peace.
I wish you all the best in your Rotary service, and I look forward to a year of building
Peace through Service together.
Yours in Rotary,
Sakuji Tanaka
President, 2012-2013

Our District
Clubs are grouped into 530 Rotary districts worldwide, each led by a District
Governor (elected annually) who is directly responsible for the administration of the
district. There are 23 Rotary Districts in Australia.
Rotary International District 9550 is one of the most diverse Rotary Districts in the
world, covering 1.5 million square kilometres north of the 21st parallel in the Northern
Territory and Queensland in Australia, and East Timor (Timor Leste). The District is
vastly diverse, and includes the world heritage areas of Kakadu National Park and
the Great Barrier Reef, rainforests, tropics and the outback. The District is renowned
for its agriculture, cattle, fishing, horticulture, mining, sugar cane, tropical fruits, and
tourism.
District 955O has 50 clubs and about 1300 members. Within our
District, East Timor covers an area of 15,000 square kilometres
and has a population of about one million people. Its natural
environment is marked by stunning mountains, beautiful beaches
and reefs, lush forests and, depending on the season, rushing
rivers or dry river-beds.
However East Timor is one of the ten poorest countries in the
world. The problems faced by East Timor are compounded by the
lack of infrastructure and a critical shortage of skills in most areas
of vocation. The East Timorese regard education as the most
important priority in the development of their country, because it is

the lack of people with the expertise and technical skills to rebuild the country that
remains the most critical stumbling block for development. The Rotary Club of Dili
was chartered in 2002.
Multicultural Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, and has a population of
about 100,000. It has a young population and vibrant economy, Charles Darwin
University, and a major liquefied natural gas plant that commenced production in
2006. Darwin is the closest Australian city to Dili in East Timor, being only a 1 hr 45
min flight away. There are eight D9550 Rotary clubs in the Territory, with five in
Darwin.
Townsville is situated on the east coast of North Queensland. It has a population of
about 160,000 and has an excellent James Cook University that is renowned for its
Marine Sciences. There are 12 Rotary clubs in the area. Throughout towns to the
south are another five Rotary Clubs, fertile sugarcane farming region, and the
famous Whitsunday beaches and islands.
350 kilometres north of Townsville is the lush, tropical city of Cairns. It has a
population of 140,000 and is known as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns
is home to seven Rotary clubs, with another 12 clubs located in towns to the north,
south and west.
900 kilometres west of Townsville and in the outback is Mount Isa, the mining,
industrial and commercial centre of Northwest Queensland. There are four Rotary
Clubs in this region. Our Rotary International District 9550 covers about 20% of
Australia – a 1.5 million square kilometre area north of the 21st parallel in Queensland
and the Northern Territory (including as far south as Tennant Creek), and Timor
Leste, where there is a Rotary Club in Dili. There are nine Rotary Clubs in the
Northern Territory, with clubs in Darwin, Nhulunbuy, Katherine and Tennant Creek,
while in North Queensland clubs extend from Thursday Island and Cairns in the north
to Proserpine and Airlie Beach in the south, and west to Mount Isa. Our District
includes the world heritage areas of Kakadu National Park and the Great Barrier
Reef, rainforests, tropics, and the outback.

SIMPLY, ROTARY
Rather than place a list of things I have done in a former life and in Rotary I thought it
may be of more relevance to pen a few words about my challenge to you in Rotary.
Simply growing Rotary
The future of our District is not something to take lightly as we know that numbers
have been declining for some years now. This means that we need to concentrate on
membership growth in all clubs this year and in future years.
If you accept the challenge of making your club a most welcoming and rewarding
club to be part of, if your club ensures that each of you, no matter how new or how
long in Rotary is rewarded by having a job, if you are prepared to learn more about
Rotary and share it, simply you will be proud to bring guests to your meetings.
So my first challenge is to ask you to help guide your club to greater maturity. For
that is what a good club has, the maturity to recognise what works and what doesn’t
and also the maturity to change and evolve.
Simply Knowing Rotary
Once upon a time if Rotary did great things it would be reported in the local
newspaper. Now to get recognition we have to plan for it. It doesn’t just happen. We
simply need to get our message across. Please wear your Rotary pin at all times and
be prepared to tell people about Rotary if and when they ask, and they will. You will
have thirty seconds to a minute to convince them that Rotary rates a part in their
lives. Will you be ready? So our second challenge is to spread the word at every
opportunity, have a plan to do this and assess that plan regularly. Are our efforts
succeeding?
Simply Sowing Rotary
Rotary has always been simple. We do great things in our towns and cities; we
support humanitarian endeavours in every corner of the world. We are that close to
wiping out the scourge of Polio and we will do so. I am asking each and every one of
you to make a difference in your club this year.
Ian

IAN IS WIDELY ACKNOWLEDGED AS A SELF STARTER AND YET VERY MUCH A QUIET
ACHIEVER. HE HAS GIVEN SOME 25 YEARS SERVICE TO THE AUSTRALIAN ROYAL

DECADE IN SUBMARINES FOLLOWED BY A DECADE WITH INTELLIGENCE AND THEN
FINAL SERVICE AS EO HMAS COONAWARRA. HE GAINED HIS TERTIARY
QUALIFICATIONS THROUGH PART TIME DISTANCE LEARNING AND IS JUSTIFIABLY
PROUD OF HIS SUCCESSFUL, USER FRIENDLY INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT
SMALL BUSINESS. APART FROM ROTARY, IAN’S GREATEST LOVE IS THE SPORT OF
HOCKEY IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY AND HIS SUPPORT OVER MANY YEARS HAS
BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN ITS GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. IAN IS ONE OF THOSE
RARE FEW WHO ARE ALWAYS READY AND WILLING TO GO THAT EXTRA MILE, HIS
COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION HAS BEEN ‘SERVICE ABOVE SELF’ OF THE HIGHEST
ORDER.

President’s Report
As President of the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise it has been an honour and a
privilege to be part of the Rotary family. And to represent this worldwide organisation
such as Rotary International which we are all very much a part of. Reflecting on
2011 – 2012 Rotary year “Reach within to Embrace Humanity” the Rotary Club of
Darwin Sunrise has continued to support the Rotary Foundation, inducted new
members and supported local and international projects.
I would like to acknowledge my Board members who supported me 100%. Frank
Stewart, Club Secretary, for his tireless efforts in ensuring that the weekly meetings
were set out accordingly, the club bulletin being available for our weekly meetings.
Ron Strachan, Sergeant at Arms, Ian Berry, Club Treasurer, for doing a fine job with
the club finances. Roger Pocock, Director Club Administrator and President – Elect,
for ensuring that we had a variety of interesting guest speakers each week. Martyn
Wilkinson, Director of Club Service Projects and his committee for ensuring that our
local projects were carried out within the required timeframes. Ainslie Ward, Director
of Foundation and her committee, Julie Nicholson, Group One Rep for organising the
CMax, D9550 Polio Plus Movie Fundraiser. Lorraine Corowa, Director, Membership,
for taking the leading role in organising fund raising, social and family get together
such as the Children Christmas Party, the informal get together at the Trailer Boat
Club and our very successful Progressive Dinner. A vote of thanks also to the
Finance Committee Frank, Ian, Quentin and Roger who meet regularly to discuss
funding requests for worthwhile projects and made recommendation to the Board,
this enabled the Board Meetings to focus on other priority areas, because the
financial requests had already been assessed and prioritized against the funding
criteria.
The two additional Darwin projects our club sponsored in the 2011 – 2012 Rotary
year were the Moil Preschool Gardening Project; and the Ludmilla Primary Special
School project. Funds were provided for - movable kitchen benches which will
support and engage not only the local Bagot Community school children, but all the
Ludmilla school community.
Our club has ongoing local and international community projects that we support, for
example the Polio Eradication Containers, the Aboriginal Health Worker Excellence
Awards, the Paramedic of the Year Award, the Cambodian Project, as well as
sponsoring three Indonesian orphanage children, the National Science Forum,

Centre for Youth Music, Plain English Speaking Awards. These are many ongoing
worthwhile projects that we have supported as well as other one off projects that
came to hand throughout the Rotary year.
One highlight for the year saw Jeff and I travel to Bangkok, Thailand in May 2012 to
attend the 103th Rotary International Convention, here we were in awe when we
came across 40,000 Rotarians from around the globe that were in attendance. This
was our first Rotary International Convention outside of Australia. We found the
Convention to have a good selection of keynote speakers and a variety of breakout
sessions and local activities to attend. One of the highlights of the keynote speakers
was the opening address from the Rotary International President Kalyan Banjee, the
other highlight was the address given by Dr Bruce Aylward, Assistant Director
General for Polio, Emergencies and Country Collaboration at the World Health
Organisation, declaring that India is now Polio free. The remaining countries of
Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria still have reported cases of Polio infections.
In conclusion I wish the President Elect Roger and his incoming Board a very
successful year and I will continue to support the Club in my role as Immediate Past
President.
Di Borella
2011/2012 President

Incoming President’s Report
Well here we go folks, my first public utterance on being your President for the 2012
– 2013 year. (What have you done?).
First of all may I say thank you to Di Borella and her team for the year just gone and
the strong position our club currently enjoys. We have a strong membership of 39
members and our financial position as can be seen from the reports herein is strong.
My major aim for the year ahead is to provide an opportunity for all of you to become
even more involved in the activity of the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise. There are so
many things which can be achieved over the next year by each of you should you
take the challenge and give just a little more of yourselves.
I am excited to be working with the new board of the club and wish to take this
opportunity to introduce to you all these very important people and ask that you all
give them your support. They are:
Marilynne Marshall – Director Club Administration & President Elect
2013/2014.
Jeff Borella – Director Service Projects
Lorraine Corowa – Director Membership
Julie Nicholson – Director Foundation
Frank Stewart – Secretary
Ian Berry – Treasurer
Di Borella – Past President
We have already had a lead up meeting to the year during May and by the time you
all read this report we will have held a joint board meeting with Di’s team. The first
thing we have agreed to is that committees will be announced along with details of
the first committee meeting dates and locations at our change over dinner. We want
your contribution to the clubs activity and the committee system is currently the best
way we have for you to be part of the action.
This year we will be continuing all our established projects and I would hope we can
refine some of these to obtain greater member engagement and where possible
upgrade the outcomes derived by your effort.
This year has seen the signing of an MOU with the YMCA of the Top End in which
![Page 24: 22001122--1133 · Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; Third - The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022050212/5f5edc79f4f5e8350f351c59/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
24 of 74
we have committed to jointly work on two fundraising activities for the YMCA and to
provide hands on support for some of their programs and activities. This offers many
opportunities and challenges going forward which I hope you can all embrace as you
are able. Jeff Borella as Director Service Projects will be doing some familiarisation
visits to YMCA facilities to see where we may be able to assist.
As you are aware membership of Rotary International in especially the developed
world is in decline, here in Darwin we have lost a club this year. If we look at our own
membership history over the last 5 years we are just holding our numbers but not
growing at all. This despite the fact that we have gained many new members over
this time. Our target for the year is to increase membership to 60 by June 2013 which
equates to an increase of 21 over the year. This increase will be lead by the
Membership Committee under the Directorship of Lorraine Corowa and I ask that you
all give her your full support. In mathematical terms this increase can be achieved if
every two current members introduce one new member.
Our efforts lead by Marilynne Marshall in raising funds for Polio Plus have been
extremely successful but we feel these can be refined and made even more
productive for the foundation. Julie Nicholson as Director Foundation will facilitate
change and will also endeavor to create an ongoing event which promotes the Rotary
Foundation to the membership and to the general public of Darwin.
Public relations will be a major focus for the year and to this end Asha McLaren and
Quentin Kilian will head our PR efforts they will be supported by PR officers from
each of our committees. Our aim is to make the population of greater Darwin aware
that the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise exists and achieves great things within this
community. Done well this will provide additional support for our efforts to achieve
greater membership, better fundraising, sponsorship of events and community
support and recognition.
Some of the things we can hopefully achieve during the year are:
Increased club social activity at least 4 events each year
The re establishment of the “Beer Appreciation Dinner”
Expansion of the “Hat Day” event to raise funds for Rotary Health
![Page 25: 22001122--1133 · Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; Third - The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022050212/5f5edc79f4f5e8350f351c59/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
25 of 74
At the end of the year I am hopeful that you can all complete a “Form of Review” of
the years activity and while we will ask all the usual questions as to your satisfaction
with the club the question I would like you all to be able to answer clearly and with
little thought is “I have achieved this benefit for my community through my
membership of the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise.”
I am more than a little challenged by the year ahead, please feel free to give me your
views as the year unfolds, I do promise to listen, however be positive and try to
include in your comments a better way forward for all we do.
Have a great year.
Roger Pocock
2012-13 President Elect

Treasurer’s Report
A very similar year to the last – in turnover we were $2000 more than last year, major
donations approximately $4000 more, and fundraising about $6000 more. Our
equity (as at 31-May-12) is about $19300 (a little less than same time last year).
My major goals for this year have been to complete codifying a budget process and
to get the Club back into the audit cycle that has fallen away over the last few years.
The budget process project has had a rocky year and still remains incomplete,
although significant work has been done on it.
The major change is arrangements this year has been the inauguration of the
Finance Committee to look at, assess and recommend expenditure to the Board, and
to assess and advise the Board on proposed fund raising activities.
NOTE: When perusing the figures in this report you should note that the financial
year is not yet complete, with most figures being up to 31-May-11.
Current Assets (as at 31-May-11) are approx. $7,000 in the current account and
$12,000 in the investment account. We are slightly above the same time last year.
Our turnover for this financial year to date is just over $50,000, (up $2.000 on same
time last year), of which we have fund raised $26,000 and donated just over $21000.
Broad details of income & expenditure are below, with detailed balance and Profit &
Loss statements attached to this report. There have been no significant write offs for
this financial year to date, although there are a couple to be processed for end of
financial year – but less than $1000. Finally, we incurred a significant expenditure
this year in replacing/upgrading the Polio collection containers, but this should see us
in good stead for a number of years.
I believe that the Club’s finances are on a sound footing going forward to a new
financial year.
I would like to acknowledge the support that I have received throughout from the
Board, and those unsung heroes who collect and raise money at our meetings.

Club Administration Report
Director: Roger Pocock
Secretary – Frank Stewart
Bulletin Editor & Club Historian- Frank Stewart
Deputy Bulletin Editor – Purdey Eades
Treasurer – Ian Berry
Sergeant at Arms – Ron Strachan
Club Protection Officer – Leanne Hardinge/ Lloyd Blinco
Attendance Officers – Roster – Many keen members
Public Relations – Asha McLaren
Audio Visual Coordinator – Warren Leeder and Martyn Wilkinson
Web Manager – Purdey Eades/Martyn Wilkinson
Public Officer – Nicole Gale / Sue Gumley
As I have reported to the club on many occasions during the year “we are being
administered” in fact our administrative team has excelled within their various roles.
We have seen some change during the year with the role of attendance officer spread over a
number of members and this is working well and will continue. Next year will see this
extended to the role of Sergeant which will also be rostered among a very active and varied
group.
Frank Stewart our Secretary, Bulletin Editor, Club Historian, Finance Committee Secretary
and “Font of all Knowledge” has again provided exceptional service to our club and to Rotary
generally. Our club is very lucky indeed to have the resource which is Frank Stewart his
advice and assistance to us all can not be quantified, lets just say he is very special.
Ian Berry our Treasurer has again provided valuable advice to the board along with
understandable reports which are up to date and make decision making at board level a lot
easier.
Additionally Ian chairs the “Finance Committee” which makes recommendations to the board
on a wide range of requests for funding from organizations large and small and also from the
general public. Ron Strachan – Sergeant at Arms has provided great entertainment for our
meetings during the year his sense of humor has lifted our meetings from the ordinary to the
extraordinary on many occasions. It is very hard indeed to make a group of people laugh on
a regular basis and at the same time not make too many comments which are politically
incorrect there are so many things we are not supposed to talk about in the current day. Well
![Page 29: 22001122--1133 · Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; Third - The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022050212/5f5edc79f4f5e8350f351c59/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)

done Ron.
Leanne Hardinge/ Lloyd Blinco – Club Protection Officer. We lost Leanne towards the end
of her term as she has moved back to more Southern climes to be closer to her family. She
maintained our register of “Ochre Card” holders and these duties have been passed on to
Lloyd who has started his year a little early.
Asha McLaren – Public Relations. Our club achievements have been promoted as best was
achievable in the circumstances at the time and Asha has been very active in the role. The
major thing identified during the year was the need to become far more inventive in the area
of Public Relations and this will be addressed over the next year.
Warren Leeder and Martyn Wilkinson - Audio Visual Coordinators. These gentlemen have
again provided the technical assistance required to support our many and varied presenters
during the year. Martyn has also been good enough to offer his services as Web Manager
during the absence of Purdey Eades.
Sue Gumley – Public Officer. This is an unsung role within the club which ensures that all
those legal requirements to ensure we are undertaking correct governance. Sue has recently
taken the role from Nicole Gale and is learning on the job as so many Rotarians do.
Our club has been lucky enough to attract many entertaining and informative presenters
during the year they have included:
NT Child Protection
Duncan McNeil
Life Line
Indigenous Volunteers
In addition to these we were visited by the Indian Cultural Group who made a major donation
to Polio Plus, some very informative “Me Talks” from new members Susan Penfold, Sue
Gumley and Majeed Mogharreban. The “Balloon” debate was again outstanding and the
impromptu political debate on the relative merits of Kevin and Julia was informative as to our
feelings towards the state of politics within Australia.
I would like to thank all those that have provided introductions to speakers during the year,
without you I would have struggled to manage the task this year.

COMMITTEE MEETINGS:
We managed two committee meetings throughout the year; these were part of the
general Friday meeting so compromised by time however there was some
information sharing on the day.
Community Services
Joan Ridley Gardens – We were surprised and a little disappointed to find that our garden had been demolished almost overnight to make way for an integrated garden space that joined the Joan Ridley Unit (JRU) . With the associated security issues it was deemed necessary to design a new space which didn’t include our little patch. We did however provide 2 above ground veggie gardens for the Cowdy Ward users. Lloyd was on hand to make sure the structural conditions were met, we also supplied some mulch from our ever generous Leslie from Shoal Bay Waste.
Clean Up Australia – a yearly event which many members participate in the largest community event to clean up and conserve our environment – I would like to make mention of Malika OKeil and Keith her partner, who quietly work in the background as the contact point for the Clean Up Australia day every year, this year was no exception. Thanks Malika and Keith. This year assistance was also provided by Roger with shade and the Sea Scouts and Rob Dorgelo did a great job on the ground.
Supported the Australia Rotary Health Research Fund (ARHRF) this year with a Hat Day fund raiser and lottery. Thanks to Jeff Borella and Julie Nicholson for helping out we raised approx $350 for Mental Health Research.

The Club supported a wide range of community organizations and a detailed list is provided by the Treasurer elsewhere.
Tropical Garden Spectacular - Now located in the early part of the year this event brings in a good income for the clubs, and it’s a great Club effort when it all comes together, the rewards are much appreciated by all the community. Thanks to Frank for again maintaining the roster and to club members for filling all the spots. Numbers a bit down on last year so we hope for improved attendances next year
Vocational Service:
The Great Balloon debate has become something of a tradition. The balloonists gave a good account of themselves and their vocations.
Our workplace visit was to the Dog pound with McDonald’s afterward for breakfast. Thanks to Jeff Borella and team for their comprehensive tour. I think we managed to finish the tour without smuggling any strays out.
International Service:
Another of our committee, Jan Conti, was also extremely busy doing a fantastic job helping with the ROMAC program in a very practical way looking after her “babies” in and out of Darwin mostly from Timor. Jan gets limited support from the club, and hopefully the Progressive dinner will provide much needed funds to the Rotary Overseas Medical Aid Program.

New Generations Service:
The combined clubs of Darwin sent 3 students out this year to the National Youth Science Forum, Thanks once again to Prath Prathapan from Nightcliff Rotary for co-ordination. We had 2 out of 3 returns and give a good account of their time away.
This Rotary year members of the Service Projects Committee again participated in
two events which are now an annual occurrence.
(1) The Paramedic of the Year Award – This event is now in its 12th year, my
thanks to Rotary members Sandy Oldroyd, Malika Okeil and Debbie Downs (St John) for their ongoing dedication and work in making this event happen.
(2) The Aboriginal Health Worker Excellence Awards – Now in its 5h year, this
event is now well established and a well supported annual event. Thanks to Di Borella and Malika Okeil.
Details of these activities are given elsewhere in this Annual Report.
My thanks to all members of the Service Projects Committee for your assistance
during the year.

2011 Aboriginal Health Worker Awards
On 18 November 2011, The Honourable Kon Vatskalis MLA hosted the Aboriginal Health
Workers Excellence Awards at Parliament House. This event is a major event for the Aboriginal
Health Worker profession in the NT and our club.
The Awards were initiated by the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise in 2006 to acknowledge the
dedication and service they provide within the health care system through-out the Territory.
These Awards are held in recognition of the work that this group of health professionals deliver to
ensure that Aboriginal Territorians are able to access quality health care. The Rotary Club of
Darwin Sunrise was again the major sponsor and organiser of this event in 2011, supported and
sponsored by the Department of Health and Families, Department of Health and Ageing, and
United Voice. This event was also fully supported by the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance NT.
Mr Jeff Moffett, Chief Executive of Department of
Health presented this year's 'Legend' award to Marion
Swift. Marion has been a practising Aboriginal Health
Worker for 28 years. In this time she has
demonstrated an outstanding commitment to both the
profession and the community she supports. Marion
did her Aboriginal Health Worker training in Alice
Springs at the old Health Department training centre;
she then did further studies when Batchelor College started in Alice Springs. Marion says she
was influenced and inspired to be an Aboriginal Health Worker by her cousin sister Kumanji
Inkamala, who was an Aboriginal Health Worker for over 30 years.
Rotarians who were involved in the organising of the 2011 event included: Malika Okeil, Di
Borella, Frank Stewart and other members. In addition to our sponsors, special thanks go to
Tissa Ratnayeke from Imprint Design and Promotions and Chris Mackay from Discovery Design.
Tissa and Chris ensured that the branding, power point, newspaper advertisements and web
sites were all completed in a timely manner and really set the standard for the event. I also
extend my thanks to members of the Charles Darwin University Youth Music Centre who
providing music for the event and Charlie King who did a top job in being MC for this event.

2011 Paramedic of the Year Award The Northern Territory 2011 Paramedic of the Year Awards were presented by the Minister for Health, Hon Kon Vatskalis MLA, at Parliament House on Thursday 1 September 2011. The Paramedic of the Year Awards was initiated by the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise to acknowledge the chosen vocation of paramedics through the dedication and service they provide in communities through-out the Northern Territory.
A total of 19 nominations were received from the community by individuals who have been directly treated by Paramedics, from those who have witnessed and been comforted by the work of a Paramedic and from staff who have nominated their peers. The awards herald the outstanding performance of Paramedic Officers working in Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and Darwin and acknowledge the professional conduct of Paramedics who often perform their role under extreme and difficult circumstances.
Congratulations to Rhys Dowell on being awarded NT Paramedic of the Year for 2011! Rhys was nominated for this year’s award by two members of the Katherine Community, who recognised that he was an outstanding Paramedic and asset to the community. Rhys Lachlan Dowell was born and raised in Katherine, Northern Territory and joined St John Ambulance as a trainee paramedic in January 2010, where he was appointed to the Katherine Region. Rhys is no stranger to the work that St John Ambulance
undertakes, as he initially joined the ranks as a St John Ambulance Cadet in 2001 for a period of two years, and then re-joined as an adult volunteer in 2008, prior to his commencement as a full time paramedic. His dedication and unfailing work ethic, with the ability to turn his hand to any task at hand, stood Rhys in very good stead for his role as a paramedic. Rhys is currently the Superintendent of the Katherine Cadet Division and is also an active member of the Katherine Adult Volunteer Division. We gratefully acknowledge our supporters and sponsors for this year’s awards: Northern Territory Government, Fire Protection Professionals, JR-Telecommunications, Rydges Darwin Airport Resort, Territory Surgical Supplies, Country Classics, United Voice and Zip Print.

This year has seen our membership refreshed with some fabulous first time
Rotarians and some transferring Rotarians. It has added to the wonderful blend that
is the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise.
As Membership Committee Director I have been remiss with Committee meetings
this year… I hope to do better next year
President Di expressed a desire to start an Early Act Club at the Ludmilla School. As
a relationship starter we thought we should do something positive for the School. The
Special Education teacher at Ludmilla School has been getting successful
engagement with the students from Bagot Community by running a “restaurant “ or
cooking class. She has asked that we support that program through the provision of
some movable kitchen benches.
President Di expressed an interest in having a progressive dinner fundraiser and it
was agreed that some of the proceeds from the dinner could go to the Ludmilla
School project. We are awaiting final approvals from the Finance Committee and the
Board for this to go ahead. This is a good start and perhaps there will be an
opportunity to commence an Early Act club next year.
The Stuff yourself for Health Progressive Dinner Fundraiser on 26 May was a hoot!
With 37 people in attendance, multiple fabulous donations, raffles and loads of
generosity shown by club members, YMCA(bus) and St Vincent De Paul (bus) we
were able to raise over $2000. It was a most enjoyable fun night which also attracted
prospective members. I’m sure Frank will put some photos in this report!

We also had a great casual night at the Trailer Boat Club on 31 March, which
attracted around 30 members who also bought along more prospective members.
Feedback from members is that they would like to see more fun fellowship events
like these in the coming year.

Long Term Vision:
Our committee’s long term vision is to eradicate polio, increase the number of Rotary
Foundation Benefactors and Paul Harris Fellows and to maximise the usage of
grants from the Rotary Foundation.
Raising Funds for the Rotary Foundation:
In 2011/12 the Rotary Foundation committee aimed to raise funds for the Rotary
Foundation by:
Continuing with the Polio Containers and improving the polio containers
The Polio Container program had a new lease of life with the introduction of a new
and improved style of container with increased visibility and security features.
Congratulations to Marilynne Marshall, who initiated, organised, sourced the new
collection containers and then did the distribution. She is an absolute credit to our
club and to Rotary.
Our Club responded to a request from the Rotary
Club of Palmerston – Litchfield which wanted to
establish its own program in the Palmerston –
Litchfield area. We organised the supply and
purchase of 50 containers for that club which will
be operating an identical scheme south of the
Berrimah Line.
Our PolioPlus Collection Containers raised $6,482
up to the end of May this Rotary Year and this was
added to by a very generous donation of $2,500
from the NT Indian Cultural Society on 11th May
2012.

PolioPlus Pins
The Club supported this Rotary Down Under initiative with the purchase and sale of
300 pins at $3.00 each.
The Foundation Draw
The Foundation draw continues to raise money for our Annual Giving to the Rotary
Foundation on a weekly basis. For every dollar ticket you buy 60 cents goes to the
fund and 40 cents adds to the jackpot draw – the lucky person this year was Frank
Stewart who collected a $1,700 jackpot (part carry over from last year as well). The
Foundation draw raised $2,350 which will go towards the many projects and includes
Provide Clean Water, Treat and Prevent Disease, Help Communities Flourish,
Supporting Education and Create a Peaceful World.
Rotary Foundation Benefactors
Asha McLaren generously offered to provide her legal services to any member
wishing to become a Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation. Although the details are
confidential – we are pleased to say this offer has been taken up and we look forward
to other members joining.

Our Banner
The logo of the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise was designed by Past District Governor Guan Teik Yeo and depicts an image of a rising sun, in the form of the Rotary Wheel radiating the energy of Rotary, and an Aboriginal art stylised barramundi. The barramundi is a well known symbol icon of the Top End and is shown as "Walking on Water" in reach of the morning sun. The barramundi has not been incorporated in any other Rotary banner in Australia, and the Aboriginal-like design recognises the indigenous heritage in the Northern Territory.

What is a Rotarian?
A Rotarian is a person who digs wells from which they will never drink
A person who vaccinates children they will never meet A person who restores sight for those they will never see A person who builds houses they will never live in A person who knows real happiness, which as Albert
Schweitser said, can only be found by serving others A Rotarian is a person who Educates children they will
never know A person who Plants Trees they will never sit under A person who feeds hungry people, regardless of colour,
race or politics A person who makes crawlers walk half round the world
