It is good to have you with us. If you have any questions or would like to know more about the Ipswich Catholic Community please visit our parish website at www.ipswichcatholic.com We hope you enjoy your time in Ipswich. Please come again soon. Dear Parishioners A queson I was oſten asked by my family and friends during the holiday in Vietnam is that: “Who cook the meal for you?” They know that I am the worst cook. I told them that I can cook for myself. They then asked what happened if I had a visitor or friend. I told them that the ‘Supermarket’ or the ‘Restaurant’ will cook for us… The Gospel this Sunday brings to us an important reality for our life. Jesus no longer speaks of himself as the “bread of life” but about his flesh and blood: “I tell you most solemnly, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you… He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him.” We are invited to the banquet of the Eucharist where we will be nourished by both the Word of God and especially the Body and Blood of Christ. This is wonderful and necessary for us on our pilgrim journey towards the eternity. We are also invited, aſter being nourished at the Eucharisc Banquet, to be food for one another by loving, helping and caring for our brothers and sisters in need according to our ability and capacity. The food (and other items) brought up to the Altar with the bread and wine in the Offertory Procession at weekend Masses so far is a significant sign, I guess, of being food for one another in our Ipswich Catholic Community, and beyond through Saint Vincent de Paul. And surely, we can be food for our brothers and sisters in Christ in a lot of other ways. May I add another ‘item’ to our prayers at Mass this Weekend. We have the children in our parishes who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmaon this coming Thursday, 23 August. We keep them in our prayers. May the Holy Spirit be at work in them as they connue their life journey ahead. And of course, we journey with them in whatever way we can… Eucharist is the heart of the Church all the me, and the heart of our life. We pray that we be always aware of this reality in our living and dealing with one another. May God bless us all! John Hong. CONFIRMATION 2018: Giſts for Confirmaon: We have available in stock at the piety shop (situated at the front of St Mary’s Church) giſts specifically for Confirmaon. Come and have a browse through the shop, as there are a range of other religious good available. The shop is normally open before and aſter Mass if there is a volunteer available.

A very warm welcome to anyone visiting our Parish. It is good to have you with us.

Dear Parishioners

A question I was often asked by my family and friends during the holiday in Vietnam is that: “Who cook the meal for you?” They know that I am the worst cook. I told them that I can cook for myself. They then asked what happened if I had a visitor or friend. I told them that the ‘Supermarket’ or the ‘Restaurant’ will cook for us…

The Gospel this Sunday brings to us an important reality for our life.

We are also invited, after being nourished at the Eucharistic Banquet, to be food for one another by loving, helping and caring for our brothers and sisters in need according to our ability and capacity. The food (and other items) brought up to the Altar with the bread and wine in the Offertory Procession at

weekend Masses so far is a significant sign, I guess, of being food for one another in our Ipswich Catholic Community, and beyond through Saint Vincent de Paul. And surely, we can be food for our brothers and sisters in Christ in a lot of other ways.

May I add another ‘item’ to our prayers at Mass this Weekend. We have the children in our parishes who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this coming Thursday, 23 August. We keep them in our prayers. May the Holy Spirit be at work in them as they continue their life journey ahead. And of course, we journey with them in whatever way we can…

Eucharist is the heart of the Church all the time, and the heart of our life. We pray that we be always aware of this reality in our living and dealing with one another.

May God bless us all!

John Hong.

LEICHHARDT CARE & CONCERN: Our next Morning Tea will be held on Tuesday 21st August at 9.30am in the School Hall. Everyone is most welcome to come along and have a chat over a nice hot cuppa.

OVER THE COMING WEEKS I WILL SHARE WITH YOU SOME INSIGHTS FROM PARISH RENEWAL FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ADELAIDE AND THE PROCLAIM CONFERENCE: Building on the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis calls us to the renewal of our parishes:

The parish is not an outdated institution; precisely because it possesses great flexibility, it can assume quite different contours depending on the openness and missionary creativity of the pastor and the community. While certainly not the only institution which evangelizes, if the parish proves capable of self-renewal and constant adaptivity, it continues to be “the Church living in the midst of the homes of her sons and daughters”. This presumes that it really is in contact with the homes and the lives of its people, and does not become a useless structure out of touch with people or a self-absorbed group made up of a chosen few. The parish is the presence of the Church in a given territory, an environment for hearing God’s word, for growth in the Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship and celebration. In all its activities the parish encourages and trains its members to be evangelisers. It is a community of communities, a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey, and a centre of constant missionary outreach. We must admit, though, that the call to review and renew our

parishes has not yet sufficed to bring them nearer to people, to make them environments of living communion and participation, and to make them completely mission-oriented (Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel, par. 28).

The parish is a community in which each member is called to a personal relationship with Jesus. The parish is directed towards discipleship, and understands itself as a community of disciples, and as a school of discipleship. It is a place of prayer and of formation that enables parishioners to embrace what the Second Vatican Council termed the universal call to holiness. Each of the baptised is seen as having a gift of the Spirit given for the sake of all. Each one is different, but all are participants: “To each is given a manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Cor 12:7). Our parishes, schools and communities will need to be places where members can learn to pray, to know and understand the Scriptures, and our Catholic tradition. They are places where we learn to discern and to use our gifts in the cause of the kingdom of God in our world. All are involved in evangelisation, bringing the gospel of joy to the world. (How do you experience being a disciple within the Ipswich Catholic Community, does our Parish nurture you in your discipleship?). Stephen ofm

Sing A New Song - A few years ago a new hymn book called “Catholic Worship Book II” was released and has been sitting in all parishes, with varying degrees of use. In an attempt to explore this resource more fully, our “Sing A New Song” sessions have attracted a happy band of singers keen to learn some new material that will eventually be incorporated into our liturgies. The next get-together will be on Tuesday the 21st of August at St. Joseph’s Church, North Ipswich, commencing at 7:00pm. If you have a copy of this green hymn book, please bring it along. Let’s see how many hymns we can get through in one hour! All parishioners are welcome.

ICC parishioners who wish to attend are asked to register with St Mary’s Ipswich Parish Office by 31/8/2018.

OASIS DAY: We extend an invitation to parishioners to spend a few hours in quiet prayer and reflection on Thursday 6th Septem-ber from 5pm to 7.30pm to be held at Mater Dei, Ferrett Street Sadliers Crossing. The evening will be a mixture of prayer, scrip-ture, quiet personal reflection, and a shared dinner. Our hope in offering these Oasis days is to encourage a prayerful stillness where we can let go of the busyness of our lives and sit in the presence of God for just a few hours. Bring along dinner to share. To register for the Oasis day please phone the Parish Office on 3281 2133 or email [email protected]
