Excerpts from Pope Francis’ Letter Laudato Si (On Care for Our Creation) CHAPTER THREE – The Human Roots of the Ecological Crisis III. The Crisis and Effects of Modern Anthropocentrism, continued

New biological technologies

The seven long paragraphs in this section are evidence of the

complexities involved. Pope Francis refers often to “human intervention,”

with statements like: While human intervention on plants and animals is permissible

when it pertains to the necessities of human life, the Catechism of the Catholic Church

teaches that experimentation on animals is morally acceptable only if it remains within reasonable limits

and contributes to caring for or saving human lives.

That is the framework for reflecting on human intervention on plants and

animals, which at present includes genetic manipulation by biotechnology. While it is

difficult to summarize the paragraphs on genetic modification, whether vegetable or

animal, medical or agricultural, the document states that these issues require constant

attention and a concern for their ethical implications.

The Pope concludes this section: We forget that the inalienable worth of a human being

transcends his or her degree of development. As we have seen in this chapter, a technology severed from

ethics will not easily be able to limit its own power.

Next week: CHAPTER FOUR

In today’s first reading and in the gospel, God and Jesus are not

revealed in the storms that surround Elijah and the disciples.

Instead, God is in the courage that Jesus offers to the disciples and in

the quiet whispering sound following the wind, earthquake, and fire

that shake the cave of Elijah. In our own lives of faith, do we find

God in the quiet or is our gaze distracted by worldly shows of power

and force?

The “boats” we inhabit today are varied, but we can expect turbulence much like the disciples themselves experienced. Though Peter was willing to step outside the boat, his faith was little, not enough for him to stand on his own. But he cried for help, was heard and was saved. We may take comfort in knowing that even if our journey is bumpy, the Lord is there to save us when we cry out.

Mystical Word

written by L.J. Milone, Director of Faith Formation, [email protected]

If you ever have any comments regarding Mystical Word, you are most welcome to contact L. J. Milone.

St. Catherine of Siena, that fiery young mystic, embodied godly freedom. And it was freedom that she communicated to her people: “Free yourselves from the bond of pride and bind yourselves to the humble Lamb.” She said that surrendering to the service of God was the greatest liberty: “Oh how sweet is this servitude that frees us from the servitude of sin!” But what held us in bondage? From what was Catherine anxious to free others? For her, the root of all slavery lay in fear.

Fr. Paul Murray, contemporary Irish Dominican and commentator on the mystical spirituality of St. Catherine, writes, “[Catherine] names for us — now in one letter, now in another — some of the many different forms that fear assumes, noting for example how afraid we can become of other people, of what they think of us and of how they judge us; afraid of death and suffering, or of God’s judgment; or afraid even of ourselves, of our own weakness and our spiritual and moral failure. “Oh how dangerous such fear is!” she writes. “It cuts off the arms of holy desire. It binds us and keeps us from knowing the truth.”

Fear can consume us. It is not only easy but understandable that fear holds such sway in our world today when we consider the virus and the high levels of unemployment. St. Catherine would admonish us, “I have asked and will continue to ask the good gentle Jesus to free you from all slavish fear, leaving you only holy fear.” We might think that is all well and good but I still feel anxious. What about my job? How will I live? While not dismissing these very legitimate concerns, Catherine might suggest that fretting about it only makes it worse. She knows and recommends only one way out of the chaos: turn to God.

“Our helper,” writes Catherine, “is God, and he is such that no one can withstand him. As long as we continue to look to this strong loving helper, we cannot be weakened by the thought of our own frailty.” Murray comments, “That contemplative focus on divine love is, for Catherine, absolutely crucial if we are to find the courage and strength to overcome our bondage to weakness and sin. Should an individual, therefore, be brought to the point of despair by the bondage of

weakness, that man or that woman should go to God like a child going to its mother, bringing all its fear and all its weakness into the presence of love. Catherine explains that love — the ‘wondrous charity’ of God — is the ‘gentlest of mothers.’ It is the ‘remedy for all our weakness.’” Far from being a naïve solution to our problems,

Catherine’s simple way of turning to God in the middle of our personal fears, chaos, weakness, and sin, can very much free us. Catherine knows this because she herself has been freed by a contemplative centering on divine love. Murray says, “Catherine knew that an individual can become so totally caught up in the coils of sin that he or she begins to suffer a virtual moral paralysis. Should this happen, the sinner, in Catherine’s understanding, is not just wicked or worldly. The sinner is afraid.” Our

fears can warp our perception of reality and cause us to do mean and selfish things. Our fears can run away with our lives and mess them up in the extreme. “But in this extremity, there still remains one way in which their freedom can be expressed, and that is by turning to God and asking for help,” says Murray. So, Catherine teaches us, “Stay near your gentle mother, charity, who will free you from all servile fear and all coldness of heart, and give you strength, and breadth, and freedom of heart.”

Even the more minor faces of fear can ruin stretches of peace in our lives. Catherine laconically states, “I have never seen a single burden relieved by impatience.” How true that is! When has being impatient ever relieved a personal burden? She wants us to be free of fear in all its forms. The impatient person, if we were to dig underneath layers of repressed anger and bitterness, is likely caught in the steely grip of fear.

Whatever burdens we carry, whatever hurts afflict us, whatever fears overwhelm us, Catherine preaches, “If you want to be relieved of your burdens and infirmities, keep your eyes on the slain, consumed Lamb, so that the fire of his charity may warm your heart and soul to love for patience and consume all the cold and damp of selfish sensual love and passion and self-pity.” We can be free!
