A LETTER FROM AUDREY HUCK Dear St. Angela Merici Parishioners, I would like to formally introduce myself as the new Catechetical Director for St. Angela Merici. Born into a devoutly Catholic household, I was raised in Covington, Louisiana along with my six younger siblings. I went on to attend Ave Maria University where I received a bachelors in Literature. Upon graduating in 2010, I returned to my home parish—St. Peter Catholic Church—where I spent the next five years teaching 4th/5th Religion and 6th English Language Arts. I also served as the St. Peter Senior High Youth Minister from 2011-2013 and earned my Alternative Teaching Certification from Our Lady of Holy Cross College, New Orleans. I have been married to my husband Tom now for seven and a half years and we’ve been blessed with five children, one in heaven and four living. Out of a desire to spend more time with these precious little ones, I took a break from traditional teaching back in 2015. Instead, I’ve spent the past five years working as a consultant writer for Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc. while also teaching remotely for Mother of Divine Grace School. I feel deeply blessed to be joining the St. Angela Merici community, using my professional experience and talents to help build up the heavenly community. As Catechetical Director, I will be overseeing St. Angela Merici’s Parish School of Religion (PSR) and Confirmation Preparation Program. If you are interested in learning more about what these programs will look like for the 2020-2021 school year or joining me in this important work as a volunteer, please contact me at [email protected]. I look forward to getting to know you in the months to come. In Christ, Audrey Huck Catechetical Director

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Thus says the LORD: Observe what is right, do what is just;

for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed.

The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, ministering to him,

loving the name of the LORD, and becoming his servants—

all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant,

them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer;

their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar,

for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.

The word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

First Reading Isaiah 56:1, 6-7

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

R. (4) O God, let all the nations praise you!

May God have pity on us and bless us;

may he let his face shine upon us.

So may your way be known upon earth;

among all nations, your salvation.

R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

May the nations be glad and exult

because you rule the peoples in equity;

the nations on the earth you guide.

R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

May the peoples praise you, O God;

may all the peoples praise you!

May God bless us,

and may all the ends of the earth fear him!

R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 67:2-3,5,6,8

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans

Brothers and sisters: I am speaking to you Gentiles.

Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous

and thus save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?

For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. Just as you once disobeyed God

but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now disobeyed in order that,

by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy.

For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

Second Reading Romans 11:13-15,29-32

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” The Gospel of the Lord.

She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel Reading Matthew 15:21-28

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus proclaimed the Gospel of the kingdom and cured every disease among the people.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Tuesday Morning Scripture Study

The Tuesday morning Scripture Study will now meet at its new time 9:30-10:45 a.m. every Tuesday morning in the Religious Ed Library. The first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8. The group studies the readings for the upcoming Sunday in order to more fully understand and apply these passages to our daily lives. In addition, both Old and New Testaments are studied using various scholastic commentaries. The study helps with the learning of how the New Testament flows from the Old Testament and Judaism as we connect basic beliefs about God, creation, prayer and morality. All are welcome who are interested in learning more about scripture!

Prayer for Start of the School Year

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Blessed are you, Lord God, Creator of body and mind and heart: you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff of our Catholic schools that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever. Amen

MEDITATIONS ON THE "LUMINOUS MYSTERIES" The First Luminous Mystery: Christ is Baptized in the Jordon. When Jesus is baptized, the Father's voice is heard: "This is my beloved Son." All are called to become adopted sons and daughters of God through baptism. We pray that children in the womb may be protected, so that they may be born and welcomed into the Christian community by baptism.

Readings for the week

“Parents are the first and most important educators of their own children, and they also

possess a fundamental competence in this area: they are educators because they are parents.

They share their educational mission with other individuals or institutions, such as the Church and State. But the mission of education must always

be carried out in accordance with a proper application of the principal subsidiarity.”

St. John Paul II, Letter to Families The first catechists in any child’s life are its parents or guardians. They are the ones who first provide a child with a concept of right and wrong; the ones who—for better or worse—make manifest the Father’s love. Mindful of this sacred responsibility, faith is meant to be shared within the home as part of daily life. The home, or “domestic church,” is intended to be a place where children can learn about, experience, and ultimately live out the faith as a true disciple of Christ.

Parish School of Religion (PSR) Program 2020-2021

With this in mind, our goal here at St. Angela Merici is to create a catechetical program for our parish youth that recognizes and supports parents in their essential role. Our hope is to enter into a sacred partnership with parents, working together to form these precious little ones so that they can internalize and embrace the truths of our Church within their lives. For the 2020-2021 school year, this partnership will look a bit different than it has in years past due to the current situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In an effort to adhere to all current guidelines and to keep our children and catechists as safe as possible, we will be switching predominantly to remote learning for this school year for grades K-8, utilizing curriculums with fully embedded online platforms. PSR lessons will be assigned by catechists on a weekly basis and students will have one week to complete all lesson components (i.e. readings, videos, games, and assessments) at home with their family (requiring approximately one hour of time per week). Optional supplemental resources will also be provided regularly, designed to help parents more fully incorporate faith into family living. In addition to these weekly remote lessons, there will also be periodic on-campus events entitled Families in Faith. These catechetical workshops are mandatory for both parents/guardians and students and will always occur on a Monday evening from 6-7:15 p.m. They are designed to better equip parents in their role as primary educators while also providing the students with opportunities for hands-on, larger group learning. Activities will include the celebration of the Mass, Stations of the Cross and opportunities for Reconciliation as well as developmentally appropriate lessons, crafts and activities. A detailed 2020-2021 PSR Calendar can be found on our parish website as well as the necessary registration forms and waivers. Please note that there is a mandatory Parent/Guardian Orientation on Monday, August 31 at 6 pm in the Religious Ed Library. For more information, contact Audrey Huck, Catechetical Coordinator, at [email protected].

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our Archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family.
