Meeting the Challenge

Set your goals high. Thinking about them will bring you joy. But do not despair if they are hard to meet. Reaching your goals is always a struggle. In Christian life, obstacles hamper our goals. But most of us are not facing the obstacles of the early Church. Those Christians were persecuted for their faith. Some of them were tempted to abandon Christ. In their struggle against sin, some of them resisted to the point of shedding blood. That has not happened to most of us. Still, sin tempts us in many ways. Many young people, for example, set high goals for themselves: not to abuse drugs, not to foster racism, not to have sex outside of marriage, not to commit acts of violence, not to drink and drive. But those goals are hard to reach. Temptation appears every day.

The Letter to the Hebrews says we can build up our endurance by reflecting on the perseverance of others. They shed the sins that kept them from their goals. “Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.” He endured the cross, “in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.” Set your goals high. And meet them with Christ.

“Do you think I have come to give you peace on Earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” (Luke 12:51) Living a stewardship lifestyle means stepping out of our comfort zone when needed. Many of us like to play it safe, not cause waves, stay in the middle of the road. In today’s world we are called to be informed and take a stance for life, marriage and religious liberty.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION Arrangements for marriage can be made by contacting the parish priest eight months prior to the date of marriage. This will provide adequate time for documentation and the diocesan required marriage preparation program. This program is intended not only for engaged couples but also for couples considering engagement and marriage. Please call Todd and Maureen Heroux, 306 491-7878 or email [email protected] for information and to register for the next session.

Baptism for Older Children

In the past couple of years we have had inquiries from the parents of a number of children who

have not been baptized and now the child is showing a keen interest in receiving the sacrament of

Baptism. Because of this, Holy Spirit parish offers a process for children 8 years old and older

who would like to explore the possibility of being baptized and receive the sacraments of

Confirmation and First Communion.

The sessions will begin towards the end of September. We will meet approximately every two weeks after school for one hour. The day of the week will depend on which day works best for most families. As the children come together for these learning opportunities they experience sessions that are not only teaching them about being a Catholic Christian but are also life-giving both for them and their parents. They learn lots with fun and they form relationship with the other children. Please contact me for more information or to register. I look forward to telling you more about this beautiful process! ~Sharon Powell, Faith Formation Coordinator : [email protected]. or 306-374-1425

Barnyard Roundup – Jesus Gathers Us In – VBS

From August 12th -16th there was a lot of activity at Holy Spirit Parish! We were blessed to have over 60 children attend this year’s Vacation Bible School, “Barnyard Roundup,” where we celebrated that Jesus is the Good Shephard who gathers us! This VBS allowed the children to experience what it means to be members of the Catholic Church through fun and exciting experiences. Thank you to the children who attended and participated with such great enthusiasm. Thank you to the parents for bringing your children to the parish every day; your commitment to your children’s faith is truly impressive. A HUGE THANK YOU must go out to all our volunteers: Caterina, Jesse, Pius, Nathan, Beau, Natasha, Clare, Lexie, Emerson, Mark, Emmi, Carmela, Lara, Danika, Lyrra, Krystal, Meron, Carmen, Virginia, and Mrs. Keen. There is a lot of preparation and planning that goes into hosting a successful VBS and without all of you it would not have been possible. Mostly, thank you all for a fun and exciting week of praise and worship! Celena Komarnicki, Youth Ministry Coordinator

Find a place in your home to keep Take Five for Faith - maybe the kitchen table, posted on the refrigerator, or on your nightstand. Give yourself the gift of five uncluttered minutes a day to read the day’s passage and reflect and pray about what you have just read. Take an extra copy for a homebound neighbour or friend. They’ll be glad you did!

Monday, August 19 MEMORIAL OF JOHN EUDES, PRIEST God cares through your hands During the plagues of 1627 and 1631, John Eudes cared for the sick, sleeping in a field to avoid infecting his fellow priests. Similar efforts made today are honored by World Humanitarian Day, commemorating 22 United Nations staff killed by a terrorist attack in Baghdad in 2003. Since then, more than 4,000 aid workers have been injured, kidnapped, or killed, targeted as they

served more than 65 million people displaced from their homes and more than 26,000 civilians killed or injured in six countries. Learn more at World Humanitarian Day and ask yourself how you can help contribute to a more humane world today and every day.

Judges 2:11-10; Matthew 19:16-22 (419). “The Lord would be moved to pity by their groaning.”

Tuesday, August 20 MEMORIAL OF BERNARD, ABBOT, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Saintly? It’s complicated Bernard of Clairvaux was a brilliant and charismatic leader of the Cistercian monastic reform that encouraged a return to the original Benedictine life of prayer and manual labor. At the same time he was friend and mentor to powerful church leaders and was drawn into the geopolitical struggles embodied in the Crusades. How to reconcile the image of the prayerful monk with that of spiritual cheerleader to a militant army of Crusaders? Church history is filled with contradictions—as is each one of us. We have the simple contemplative and the militant crusader living in our own heart. Which one shall we nurture?

Judges 6:11-24a; Matthew 19:23-30 (420) “Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Wednesday, August 21 MEMORIAL OF PIUS X, POPE Be a warm-hearted believer Pope Pius X pastored the universal church from 1903 to 1914, a tumultuous period in world history, which saw traditional ways of life giving way, whether in the natural sciences, politics, or economic life, to new ways of thinking, organizing, believing. Though most commonly remembered as a staunch traditionalist and “anti-modernist,” Pius should also be remembered for his simple, unpretentious lifestyle (he never lost sight of his poor roots), his personal warmth and love of children, and his generous charitable outreach. After the horrific Messina earthquake of 1908, the most destructive earthquake ever recorded in Europe with some 100,000 casualties, Pius is said by one source to have filled the Apostolic Palace with refugees long before the Italian government acted. Make sure a warm heart is front and center in your own life of faith.

Judges 9:6-15; Matthew 20:1-16 (421). “Are you envious because I am generous?”

Thursday, August 22 MEMORIAL OF THE QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The sky is not the limit Lumen gentium, Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, declares the “Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all guilt of original sin, on the completion of her earthly sojourn, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen of the Universe.” Going to Orlando, Florida anytime soon? Visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, a 2,000-seat church dedicated to the Queenship of Mary and established to serve the 30 million tourists who visit the Orlando area every year. Wish to be reminded of Mary’s connection to the whole universe, and why that will matter into the future? Visit nearby Cape Canaveral. Judges 11:29-39a; Matthew 22:1-14 (422). “The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and

good alike.” Friday, August 23 MEMORIAL OF ROSE OF LIMA, VIRGIN Care of the soul Life isn’t easy. It’s good and beautiful, yes, but stressful, chaotic, and sometimes even devastating. Wouldn’t it be great to “get away from it all”? One might think that this is what Saint Rose of Lima did when she became practically a recluse in her parents’ house. She dedicated her life to solitude and a profound sense of solidarity with Jesus the Christ, especially the Suffering Christ. Yet within this calling, Rose found a spaciousness within herself to open a nearby room in the house to care for people in need. How do you experience this sacred dynamic of contemplative quiet and compassionate care?

Ruth 1:1, 3-6, 14b-16, 22; Matthew 22:34-40 (423). “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind . . . . You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Saturday, August 24 FEAST OF BARTHOLOMEW, APOSTLE Caught up in prayer If you met Jesus face-to-face and he saw right through you—straight into your soul—and told you exactly what you had been doing before meeting him, what would he see and what would he say? Would he judge that you were honest and good? That you had spent the prior moment in prayer? That’s what happened to the Apostle Bartholomew upon being introduced to Jesus. Let’s always be ready to be “caught in the act” of communing with God, with a pure heart, recognizing our King when he greets us.
