Art-making during the February Vacation will celebrate winter with four exciting activities each day, including drawing/painting, ceramics, sculpture/3D, and performing arts. Four days of creativity during vacation breaks! Each day, students will attend 2 Studios: Ceramics and Mixed Media. Excellent for all levels, the Ceramics Studio is an introduction to wheel-throwing and handbuilding, with many opportunities for intermediate students to perfect their skills. Mixed Media includes techniques such as drawing, painting, printmaking or collage. The curriculum is challenging and flexible, offering plenty of opportunity for self-expression, discovery and fun while working with other teens. All materials provided.

4 STUDIO EXPERIENCES EACH DAY!Drawing and Painting / 2DAge appropriate projects are designed to stimulate the creative process and enhance visual skills through careful observation. Art techniques in drawing, painting, and printmaking are taught using a variety of media including watercolor, acrylic, pastel, collage and mixed media.

Sculpture/3DCreate unique and imaginative sculptures! Explore such topics as 3D design, fiber arts, bookmaking, paper mache, and assemblage, using traditional and non-traditional materials.

CeramicsCreate in clay! Using white stoneware clay, learn handbuilding techniques including coiling, pinching and sculpting. All pottery and artworks will be glazed and fired.

Performing ArtsEach class offers stimulating group games and performance opportunities. Students experiment with pantomime, improvisation, ensemble work, movement and character creation, creating a stage presentation drawn from poetry, fairy tales, myths, skits and student-generated dramas.

SAMPLE DAYEach day, students will attend 4 creative classes led by our experienced art teachers, with additional supervision provided by a Teacher Assistant (TA) and Counselor in Training (CIT). Students have mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks, and free time after lunch to play outdoors or participate in other workshops. Lesson plans and art projects, which focus on skill building and self-expression, are inspired by weekly themes.

TEEN SUMMER PROGRAMSTEEN STUDIOS & COUNSELORS IN TRAINING

TEEN STUDIOS FOR GR 7-12Participants will be grouped according to grade.NAC Teen Studios offer opportunities for teens to express their ideas, develop skills, learn art techniques and important critical thinking skills. Teens participate daily in three studios: Ceramics (including wheel throwing and handbuilding), Drawing, and Mixed Media (including painting, printmaking, collage, and 3D). This is a great opportunity for teens to build their art portfolios, learn art concepts and meet other teens. Classes are led by experienced New Art Center professional artists. Students may bring lunch or submit a signed “Permission to Leave” form to buy lunch outside the premises. All materials provided.

*NEW THIS SUMMER - LIFE DRAWING!This summer, NAC is adding life drawing to our TEEN STUDIO program. There will be clothed figure drawing (weeks 3 and 7) and portrait drawing (weeks 5 and 9), which will include at least 3 drawing sessions with a live portrait or figure model. Model fee is included in tuition.

COUNSELORS IN TRAINING : CIT PROGRAM GR 9-12This is a hands-on training program for high school students who are interested in developing leadership skills while working with young children in the arts. Under the mentorship of experienced New Art Center faculty and staff, CIT’s will have the opportunity to work directly with students, assisting teachers during art classes. This is a unique opportunity to gain practical experience and important skills. Register for one or more weeks. Register by week: $250 ($225 until 5/1)

PROGRAM INFORMATIONABOUT NAC VACATION PROGRAMS

WHO WE ARESince 1977 the New Art Center, a non-profit community art space, has provided outstanding artis-tic experiences for people of all ages. Every year, there are nearly 3,000 registrations of children, teens and adults who participate in art classes, workshops, exhibitions and art-related events. Located in a beautiful historic neighborhood in the heart of Newton, NAC attracts students from all thirteen of Newton’s villages and across the greater Boston area.

NAC’s vacation art programs are tailored for students of all ability levels interested in developing skills, creativity, and self-expression. Programs take place in four well-equipped art studios, two ceramics studios, and outside on Washington Park. Classes are led by professional artists who implement a curriculum that encourages students to express their creative talents and ideas while learning the fundamentals of arts practice, art history and art literacy.

PROGRAM INFORMATIONABOUT NAC VACATION PROGRAMS

REGISTRATIONAll registrations are taken on a first come, first-served basis. Full payment is due upon registration. Early registration discount for summer ends May 1, 2019!

WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDS Prior to May 21, 2019, withdrawals will be fully refunded, less a $25 administrative fee*. Registrations withdrawn after May 21, 2019 cannot be refunded; they will be credited (less the administrative fee*) toward classes and programs taken within one year of the date of the credit.*Credit card companies do not refund processing fees. NAC’s Administrative Fee covers most processing fees, but we will deduct processing fees for refunds of charges above $1000.

WAITING LIST If a week is full at the time of registration, you may request to be put on a waiting list for that week and we will contact you if a space opens up. Call the office for more information.

WELCOME LETTERSSummer Welcome Letters will be sent out the week before your child’s program. Please make sure to clearly write the best email address to reach you, so you may obtain important information and emergency forms.

EMERGENCY FORMSUpdated online emergency forms are mandatory for our summer programs. You will received a link from our registrar in early June. Forms are due 2 weeks before your program begins.

SCHOLARSHIPSScholarships are available according to need, on a first-come, first-served basis. Please email [email protected] for an application.

MEDIA RELEASENAC Programs are sometimes videotaped or photographed for publicity in catalogs, newspapers, radio, television, or on our social media pages. Permission to be included in publicity is implied by enrollment. Please contact the office in writing if you do not wish to be included in publicity.

PARKING & ACCESSThe New Art Center has a small parking lot located off Madison Avenue. Please follow signs regarding the flow of traffic during drop-off and pick-up times. The Main Gallery is wheelchair accessible. Please notify office staff of any special circumstances, needs, or requirements.

NUTS/ALLERGIESDue to the prevalence of nut allergies, NAC is a nut-free environment. NO NUTS, PLEASE.

MEDICATIONSAll medications must be checked in with a staff member prior to the start of the week, with detailed, written instructions. Children may not keep medication in their backpacks or lunch boxes, and all medications will be administered by a staff member, according to parental instructions. Parents must submit an emergency form for each enrolled child.

BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT POLICYStudents must be able to function independently or be accompanied by an aide. As each week begins, teachers will discuss appropriate behavior, language, and the safe, respectful use of materials in the classroom.
