DESCRIPTION

The basic outline and strategy for a proposed website and mobile application.

TRANSCRIPT

Page 2: Fast Foodie

Regardless of industry, promotions and specials play a large role in making ones product or service more appealing than the competitions. This is clearly evident in the food and drink industry with happy-hours, two-for-one specials or percentage-off offers drawing in an above average number of customers during the time these specials are active.

Over time these offers become engrained in the brand’s image and are well known by consumers, for example Spur’s two for one burger special on a Monday, or Steers Wacky Wednesday special. However specials that are run for a shorter time or by brands with a smaller advertising budget, can often go by unnoticed. Research has indicated a clear gap for an online source that provides easy access to all special offers and deals available.

Enter Fast Foodie: the most comprehensive, and up-to-date online source of food and drink related specials, deals and promotions. Rather than being limited to price and product style content, Fast Foodie provides users with humorous and witty reviews on many of the restaurants and eateries it features. The combination of concise, relevant and easily accessible information and a unique take on restaurant critique, make the Fast Foodie brand both meaningful and able to different.

What follows are the proposed functions of the Fast Foodie website and application as well as a basic outline of the social media strategy and online advertising plan. Cape Town based offers have been used for purpose of demonstration.

Introduction

Page 3: Fast Foodie

The Website

The primary function of the website is to provide users with quick and easy access the best food and drink related offers available. It features simple, user-friendly filtering controls that make streamlining searches fast and effective. The site makes use of a single page layout in which content is displayed in a scrolling, listed form, with most relevant content appearing first. The relevance of content is determined by the day on which the site is accessed, for example if the site is access on a Monday, the top entries will relate to specials on offer on a Monday.

From the fixed navigation bar at the top of the page users are able to access the review featured on the site. Once selected reviews appear as thumbnails that contain the beginning of the review as well as the rating. Users can read the entire review by selecting the “read more” option. The ratings are explained by selecting the question mark icon next to each rating.

The website is built to allow for access via all mobile devices and all content can be shared to social media platforms directly from the website.

Butlers Pizza

Back

With this week’s torrential rain I certainly wasn’t going to be making dinner, or venturing out to get any either. Even though no rain has ever been recorded inside my kitchen, weather is a stellar excuse for eating out, and I pounce on excuses like no metaphor of cat and mouse could ever justify. The decision was made, and so was the phone call to Butlers, in 35 – 45 minutes I could expect my order, delivered free of charge.

In my opinion pizza menus are pretty standard, and regardless of establishment, my choice in toppings always include feta, bacon or both. From Butlers the choice is between the following:

Big Cheese Blue: bacon, Butleritos (a peppery thing with a tomatoey zing – their words) and blue cheese.

Funky Fab: feta, avo, bacon, Butleritos.

Meaty Foursome: bacon, ham, salami, pepperoni, Butleritos.

It’s safe to say that if all other pizzas were wiped from the face of the earth, those three would more than suffice. This time the Big Cheese Blue prevailed. I am not a fan of blue cheese but in this case it complements the bacon amazingly. Blah, blah, blah, anything tastes good with bacon.

About 40 minutes later there was a knock at the door, and when I opened it I realised what the real essence of the Butlers brand was: humour. Standing in the doorway was a young man who was neatly dressed in a smart shirt, black pants, and a bright red bowtie with matching cummerbund, completely and utterly drenched!

I love my pizza with a side of degraded deliveryman, thanks Butlers!

Barcelos is a chain of restaurants with a focus on flame-grilled chicken. I don’t care about their franchise or their menu, not in the slightest. There’s only one choice worthy of review, and that’s the two for one chicken burger special.

Usually R25.95 each these crazy poultry purveyors offer two of these babies for R31.95. That’s no joke! You can choose between lemon & herb, mild peri or veri peri marinade and the chefs churn them out on the double (a pun I just couldn’t resist). Along with being fast and cheap, you can get your grubby paws on these guys 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Just note that on weekends after about 23h00, you’ll be competing with a barrage of boozers who have taken the trek from numerous watering holes to fill their bellies. Then again on weekends after 23h00 you’re more than likely well-refreshed yourself and will be non the wiser. Good on you.

A couple of downsides with this establishment are that it’s located inside an Engen Quik Shop. With a Woolworths and a selection of pricy chocolates you might find the line between want and need getting rather blurred. Also it crawls with police and neighbourhood watch. They don’t take fondly to drunks or drunk driving, and once you’ve sampled the sweet nectar of Barcelos, you’ll find yourself ending up here at the end of many a night. Pokerface on, there are burgers to be eaten and no lawman should get in the way.

Where to start - the same question you’ll ask yourself when you arrive at the entrance to the fast food Mecca, known as Eastern Food Bazaar. The strangest thing about having such variety is that the majority of people I know who eat here, myself included, rarely eat anything other than two or three items from their menus.

That’s right, menus, as in plural; one for each of the themed restaurants found behind a massive buffet style glass counter. Once the hard work of deciding what to eat has been done the procedure is simple: place your order at one of three tills, pay the pittance they charge for just about everything, and then wait in line with your slip in front of the menu you chose from.

Certain menus are more popular than others, which can result in a fairly long, but worthwhile wait. The most popular menus are the two that are home to my favourite dishes: Chicken Shwarma, and Butter Chicken. At R35 and R40 respectively, you get enough food per portion to feed two, and even though I battle to finish all of it, I won’t be sharing.

Aside from that, the Chinese food is great, so is the Tandoori Chicken, and a R9 garlic Naan goes down a like a homesick mole when dipped in Butter Chicken sauce. All round Eastern Food Bazaar is hard to fault and is a worthy recipient of the Golden Spork.

A word of advice from a seasoned veteran: after sunset during the month of Ramadan (early July - early August), stay as far away from Eastern Bazaar as Julius Malema stays from the truth. Unless of course you enjoy crowds large enough to eclipse the sun.

Hudsons,Part One

Back

Although Hudsons piece de resistance is the burger, I’ll have to take their word for its awesomeness, because I’ve never eaten one. As a self-proclaimed aficionado of all things fast, cheap and food related, I visited Hudsons with two things in mind: starters and cocktails. The reason being is that between 16:00 and 18:00 both of these are half price.

Before even looking at the menu I was happy; this special was the answer to many of my problems. I could bring my girlfriend here, and stop her nagging that we never do anything. What’s more I could earn mega brownie points by paying for everything, and not break the bank in the process. Not a likely scenario at a place as trendy as this. On top of that I could order a cocktail and still look like a respectable man, because it’s low price made it the logical choice. *

With girlfriend in tow I arrived at their Claremont restaurant, destined for success and eager to see what was on offer. Turning a blind eye to the plethora of outstand looking burgers, I focussed on the starters. We ordered Porky Poppers – chilli poppers wrapped in bacon, battered and served with a blue cheese dip, BBQ chicken wings, Nachos and Popeye’s Cigars – calzone rolls stuffed with spinach and cream cheese, all of which would cost a measly R71. That was accompanied by an orange milkshake called the Dreamsickle; it tasted like a Fizzer and came in a glass the size of a childs head.

I had high expectations because of what I’d heard, and Hudsons did not disappoint. I will definitely be back to try their burger, and with the bar set high it’s got its work cut out for it.

*A Mojito is passable, a strawberry Daquiri not so much.

Salushi

Back

Salushi: an upmarket restaurant with cheap sushi and convenient parking. I could end the review there and it would be an accurate enough description, but I will expand on these points because the restaurant deserves it.

Parking might not seem like an important factor, but it is the bane of my existence and I would rather not go somewhere if I have to do battle to park my car. At Salushi I have never not found parking, and more often than not I can see my car from my table. Couple this with being centrally located in Claremont, and you have a recipe for success.

Although their menu provides evidence of noodles and salads, and on the rare occasion I’ve seen people eat one or the other, to me, Salushi equals sushi. In fact the 50% off sushi promotion they offer has made paying full price for sushi anywhere else feel like a sin. The quality is great, and it is always fresh and tasty. Anything freshly made takes a while to prepare and Salushi is no exception; in this respect however that are relatively fast. The hands on approach of the owner and managers and friendly, efficient staff create an awesome environment that make the slight wait no problem at all.

Bon Bons Gift and Passion Prawn are their two specialty dishes, and are both a must have. I usually add one of these to my standard selection of fashion sandwiches and California rolls. Salushi do their bit for charity by charging R1 per glass, and R5 per jug of water, the proceeds of which are all donated to Baphumele Childrens Home.

The popularity and availablity of this special make it feel like a mortal sin to go else where for sushi, and make paying full price seem like pure evil.

In order to have a successful business, one needs to identify a gap in the market, and fill it; visit Food Lovers Market at lunch time and the result of this equation becomes crystal clear: happy customers by the truck load.

Their promise is simple: provide top quality fresh food and produce at affordable prices. From sushi to pizza slices, you’d be hard pressed to find something you don’t want to eat here. With R50 in your wallet, you can choose from a myriad of sandwiches and rolls (Under R30), or fill a tub with whatever salad or freshly prepared hot meal your heart, or stomach, desires (R25 – R45 depending).

Food Lovers Market have not sacrificed quantity for quality, and boast a coffee shop, bakery, deli and fresh produce section, each of which is excellent in their field. There are constantly specials on offer: 50% off sushi after 15:30, R2.50 for doughnuts*, as well as the hot meals, that towards the end of the day are dished up and sold at ridiculously low prices.

Whether you are in the near vicinity or not, it’s well worth a visit; their awesome food, friendly staff and well-managed store ensure that Food Lovers Market is a lunch hour oasis, and a worthy recipient of the Golden Spork.

* This is dangerous territory; the doughnuts are ridiculously cheap and more addictive than heroin. You’ve been warned.

About the ratings Back

The Golden Spork is an award bestowed upon restaurants achieving supreme glory in every area of their craft – pure prestige. Just how prestigious is it? Imagine an Oscar, winning a Grammy and then being Knighted by the Queen. That prestigious.

Good but not quite perfect. Like getting pulled over while you’re drunk: good is getting away with it, perfect is not getting pulled over in the first place.

Four stars is waking up on a Saturday, thinking it’s Monday, and then realising it’s Saturday.

Three stars is like finding money in the pocket of those jeans you haven’t worn in a while. The only problem is that it’s R10 and not R100.

Two stars is like trying to listen to a CD that’s scratched; bits of good ruined by equal parts of bad.

The bar/bars are not very high to begin with, but one star fails to clear any of them. Think Eric Cartman running the 100m hurdles.

The Fast Foodie App is available for smartphone and tablet use. It features content displayed in a similar fashion to the website, with most relevant content being displayed first.

A drop down menu provides users with a set of filtering options allowing for a streamlined search. Unique to the app is the ability to search for content via what has been most liked, allowing users to ascertain the most popular offers.

The content across both platforms is ubiquitous, and updated regularly to ensure all offers are valid and prices up-to-date. As with the website users of the app can share content to social media platforms directly from the app.
