He made 22 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss to Slovenia in his Olympic debut on Feb. 14. Zapolski plays for Jokerit of the KHL and leads the league in shutouts with nine. But with the Olympics a possibility, he wanted to give it a shot and has spent the year in Germany playing for Kassel. His Olympic dream has become reality and on the ice following yesterday's win vs. Slovakia, he got to share a special moment with his daughter Jamie when he skated over to the glass and wished her a happy (5th) birthday and told her he loved her. His wife, mom and dad, little sister and other daughter were there at the glass too. TIDBITS Ryan Donato scored two power play goals yesterday to help propel the U.S. to a 2-1 win over Slovakia. Brian O'Neill and Jordan Greenway scored in their Olympic debut Wednesday (Feb. 14) vs. Slovenia. The last players previously to score in their first Olympic game came in 2010 when Ryan Malone, Bobby Ryan and David Backes tallied in their first ever Olympic game -- a 3-1 win over Switzerland on Feb. 16 ... Of the 22 players that dressed for Wednesday's (Feb. 14) game vs. Slovenia, all but Brian Gionta were making their Olympic debut. In addition, John McCarthy played his first-ever game for a U.S. national team at any level. ... Jordan Greenway celebrated his 21st birthday on Friday (Feb. 16) in South Korea ... Team USA has a large contingent of family and friends here in South Korea. Chad Billins, Jonathon Blum and Noah Welch each have 10 guests. For five players

-- Blum, Chris Bourque, Chad Kolarik, David Leggio, and Bobby Sanguinetti -- both their wife and child(ren) are here, along with others in some cases ... Team USA is tied with Slovenia as the second oldest in the tournament in average age at 30, trailing only Canada at 31. Teams range in average age from 27 to 31. Further, the U.S. is tied as the

shortest team in the tournament at 1.82 meters and 11th in average weight at 190 pounds. Slovakia is the tallest (1.87) and heaviest (201) of any team in the tournament on average ... Five U.S. players arrived in Gangneung the evening of Feb. 7, while 17 others arrived the evening of Feb. 8. Brian Gionta, Bobby Sanguinetti and Ryan Bourque had travel delays and didn't arrive until just after Team USA's practice on Feb. 9 concluded ... The U.S. had six practices before its first game on Feb. 14 vs. Slovenia. The first practice included all but the three players above, with the other practices including all 25 rostered players ... Captain Brian Gionta was in studio with NBCSN's Liam McHugh the morning of Feb. 13. Gionta, Noah Welch, Jim Slater and Bobby Butler visited NBC's Today Show that night, including an on-air session with Al Roker. The foursome also took a photo with Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim ... Anne Thompson from NBC Nightly News sat down in stands at Gangneung Hockey Centre following practice on Saturday (Feb. 10) with Broc Little, Marc Arcobello and Brian O'Neill to talk about their roots at Yale University. Brian Gionta scored 425 in a Yahtzee game here in South Korea against David Leggio and Jim Slater, a score that included two Yahtzees ... It is believed that Chris Bourque (U.S.)/Ray Bourque (Canada) and Paul Stastny (U.S.)/Peter Stastny (Czechoslovakia/Slovakia) are the only two father-son combos who have played in the men's ice hockey tournament in the Olympics representing different countries.

NTDP ROOTSFive members of the U.S. Olympic squad played at USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich., including Jordan Greenway, Chad Kolarik, Brandon Maxwell, Ryan Stoa and Troy Terry.

FAMILY AFFAIRRyan Donato's father, Ted, was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team and Chris Bourque's father, Ray, played for Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics. Matt Gilroy's father-in-law, John Taft, served as captain for Team USA at the 1976 Olympic Winter Games.

NHL EXPERIENCEFifteen of the 25 players on this year's U.S. Olympic Men's Team have played in the NHL, combining for 3,083 games. That group is led by captain Brian Gionta, who has 1,006 games of experience across 15 seasons. The others include Jim Slater (584), James Wisniewski (552), Matt Gilroy (225), Mark Arcobello (139), Bobby Butler (130), Jonathon Blum (110), John McCarthy (88), Noah Welch (75), Chris Bourque (51), Bobby Sanguinetti (45), Ryan Stoa (40), Brian O'Neill (22), Chad Billins (10) and Chad Kolarik (6).

SEAN BRAZIELSean Braziel, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, is the team leader for the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team. In his career, Braziel deployed to more than 27 countries and served in 13 separate combat deployments. In his final position during his 22 years of activeservice, he was the deputy commander for Marine Corps Intelligence Activity, in Quantico, Virginia—the 1,200 person civilian and military Service Intelligence Center.

JOHANNSON PRESENCEU.S. general manager Jim Johannson passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours on Jan. 21, 2018, at his home in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the age of 53. Johannson's wife Abby and their two-year-old daughter Ellie are here for the Games as is Johannson's brother John. There is a locker stall dedicated to Johannson in the team's dressing room and all members of Team USA have JJ T-shirts and coins. Other remembrances include a patch inside both the practice and game jerseys and JJ pins.

CAPTAIN AMERICABrian Gionta is captain of the 2018 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team. Gionta, who played for Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy, has skated in 1,006 career NHL regular-season contests. The U.S. has three alternate captains in defensemen Matt Gilroy and Noah Welch and forward Jim Slater. Two of the three will serve as alternates for each game, with Gilroy and Welch serving the role for tonight's game.

2018 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMESThe U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team is one of 12 teams competing at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.

The tournament features 12 teams divided into three groups of four. Team USA is competing in Group B alongside Russia, Slovakia and Slovenia. Group A includes Canada, Czech Republic, South Korea and Switzerland while Group C includes Finland, Germany, Norway and Sweden.

The teams will play a round robin within their groups, with eight teamsearningbyestothequarterfinalroundandfourteamsplayingqualificationgamestoearnquarterfinalspots.Thewinnersofthefourquarterfinalcontestsadvancetothesemifinals,andthetwosemifinalwinnerswillsquareoffinthegold-medalgamewhilethetwosemifinallosers will meet for bronze.

WILLMANN AND DEPECHE MODETeam USA massage therapist Peewee Willmann, who has been part of the support staff of U.S. teams since 2009, will re-join rock group De-peche Mode on its tour following the Olympics. It is Willmann's first foray into being a massage therapist for a music group.

Jim Johannson, General Manager Jim Johannson passed away unexpectedly at age 53 on Jan. 21, 2018, at his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was named Team USA's general manager on August 4, 2017, and worked full-time for USA Hockey as assistant executive director of hockey operations. A two-time Olympian as a player (1988, 1992), Johannson has been involved in a management capacity with U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Teams since 2002.

Tony Granato, Head Coach Tony Granato, the current head coach of the University of Wisconsin men's ice hockey team, is making his Olympic head coaching debut with the 2018 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team. He previously served as an assistant coach of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team. Before joining Wisconsin, Granato helped lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to four straight playoff appearances as an assistant coach. Granato played for the U.S. in seven international competitions, including the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.

Keith Allain, Assistant Coach Keith Allain previously served in the same capacity for the 1992 and 2006 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Teams, the 2005 and 2006 U.S. Men's National Teams and the championship-winning 1996 U.S. World Cup of Hockey Team. Allain is currently the head coach of the men's ice hockey teamatYaleUniversity,whereheledtheteamtoitsfirst-everNCAANationalChampionshipin2013. Allain was an assistant coach of the Washington Capitals from 1993-1997 before becoming the goalie coach for the St. Louis Blues from 1998-2006.

Chris Chelios, Assistant Coach ChrisCheliosisonthecoachingstaffforanOlympicteamforthefirsttime.Hepreviouslyservedas an assistant coach for the 2016 U.S. National Junior Team that earned a bronze medal at the IIHF World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Finland. As a player, Chelios represented the U.S. on 10 different occasions, including four Olympic Winter Games (1984, 1998, 2002, 2006). Elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013, Chelios spent 26 seasons in the NHL before retiring as the all-time leader in games played by a defensemen in league history with 1,651 appearances.

Ron Rolston, Assistant Coach RonRolstonisonthecoachingstaffforanOlympicteamforthefirsttimein2018.Rolstonpreviouslyserved as the head coach of the U.S. National Development Team from 2004-2011, where he led the team to three gold medals and one silver medal at the IIHF World Under-18 Championship. Most recently, Rolston has spent two seasons with the Arizona Coyotes organization, including oneyearasheadcoachtotheirformerAHLaffiliate,theSpringfieldFalcons,in2015-16.

Scott Young, Assistant Coach Scott Young is serving as an assistant coach for a U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team for the firsttimein2018.YoungiscurrentlythedirectorofplayerdevelopmentforthePittsburghPenguinsfollowing three years on the men's hockey staff at his alma mater, Boston University. Young is one of only 12 U.S.-born men's hockey players to compete in three Olympic Winter Games (1988, 1992, 2002). He was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2017 this past December.

FELLOW U.S. NATIONAL HOCKEY TEAM SUCCESSOver the last two months, six other U.S. hockey teams have found success in international competition. On Nov. 12, the U.S. Women's National Hockey Team topped Canada, 5-1, to claim the 2017 Four Nations Cup at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. The title was Team USA's third-straight in the event and eighth overall. A month later, the 2017-18 U.S. National Sled Hockey Team edged Canada, 3-2, to claim the 2017 World Sled Hockey Challenge at McLauchlin Arena in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The victory marked an unprecedented fourth-straight title in the event and tournament record sixth title overall. The U.S. National Under-17 Team also claimed a pair of international titles. On Dec. 16, the U.S. National Under-17 TeamdefeatedRussia, 2-1, in a shootout in its final game ofthe 2017 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament to secure first placewith an undefeated 2-1-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record. The team also claimed the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Dawson Creek, British Columbia in early November. On Dec. 16, the U.S. Junior Select Team reached the championship game of the 2018 World Junior A Challenge in Truro, Nova Scotia, but fell to Canada West, 5-1, to earn second. The U.S. National Junior Team earned a bronze medal on Jan. 5, when it topped the Czech Republic, 9-3, to close out the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, New York. For the first time ever, Team USA has now earned a medal in threestraight years at the event (2017 - gold, 2016 - bronze). Finally, the 2018 U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team won an unprecedented fourth-consecutive gold medal at the IIHF Under-18 Women's National Championship last month in Dmitrov, Russia. After sweeping the preliminary round, the U.S. erasedatwo-goaldeficitinthefinalperiodtotopCanadainashootout,4-3,inthesemifinals,beforeearninga9-3victoryoverSweden to take home gold. 2018 PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMESThe 2018 Paralympic Winter Games will take place in PyeongChang, South Korea, from March 9-18, 2018. The U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team, which was unveiled on Jan. 1 alongside the Men's and Women's Olympic rosters, will represent the United States in sled hockey. The United States enters the Paralympic Winter Games as two-time defending Paralympic gold medalists. After going undefeated and unscored upon to claim the gold medal at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Team USA became the first nation to claim back-to-backParalympic gold medals in sled hockey when it defeated Russia, 1-0, in the gold-medal game of the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

THE TIME IS NOW TOUR, PRESENTED BY TOYOTAThe Time is Now Tour, which was completed last December, consisted of a series of games in the U.S. to assist the U.S. Women's National Team in preparation for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. 11TH HOCKEY WEEKEND ACROSS AMERICAThe 11th annual Hockey Weekend Across America will be held March 2-4, 2018. Hockey Weekend Across America will feature a theme for each of the three days, including Wear Your Favorite Hockey Jersey Day on Friday (March 2); Try Hockey Day on Saturday (March 3) and Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes Day on Sunday (March 4). Hockey Weekend Across America was created by USA Hockey in 2008 to engage the hockey community in celebrating the sport of hockey at all levels and exposing the sport to new audiences.

USA HOCKEY'S NATIONAL TEAM DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMFounded in 1996, USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program began operations in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and remained there until the summer of 2015. The full-time program is composed of two squads, the U.S. National Under-18 Team and U.S. National Under-17 teams, which compete in the USHL as well as against international and collegiate competition. The Under-17 Team competes in the United States Hockey League and also participates in three international events annually. The U.S. National Under-18 Team’s schedule includes games against NCAA Division I and III opponents, contests versus USHL teams as well as competition in three international tournaments.

USA HOCKEY ARENAUSA Hockey Arena, home of USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, is a two-sheet facility with regulation ice (85x200) in the main arena and Olympic-size ice (100x200) for the secondary sheet. Since being acquired by the USA Hockey Foundation on April 1, 2015, the facility has added 20,000 square feet to the property that included adding a 9,800-square-footworkoutfacility,additionalofficesandaconferencecenter.In total, the facility encompasses 170,000 square feet with the main rink providing 3,504 seats for hockey games and 4,500 seats for other performances and events. Accompanying the facility is the USA Hockey Summer Drive-In,whichfeaturesthreelargescreensthatshowfirst-rundouble-features seven nights a week, as well as CJ’s Brewing Company.
