Men’s Ice Hockey is one of the 80 events that will be featured at the 2010 Winter Olympics. A total of 12 teams will compete, they will play 3 games and receive points on wins, losses and ties. The top 4 will receive byes while the other 8 will play one game and the 4 winners will advance to the the quarter-finals.

Every game will be a sudden death elimination

game with the winners advancing and the losers going home. Teams are allowed to have 20 skaters. The venues will be GM Place and UBC Winter Sports Centre.

Qualification Qualification

Qualification for the 2010 Winter Olympics was structured by the 2008 IIHF World Ranking idea. The top nine teams from the 2008 Men’s World Ice Hockey Championships received berths into the tournament.

Teams ranked 10-30 would play a 5 game tournament. Teams ranked 19th through 30th played in a first qualification round in November 2008, where the top three teams from the round advance to the second qualification round.

Teams ranked 10th through 18th joined the three top teams from the first qualifying round to play in a second qualification round. The top three teams from the second qualifying round advanced to the Olympic tournament.

They are awarded 3 points for a win, 2 for an overtime loss and 1 for a loss in regulation. The top four ranked teams will receive byes to the quarterfinals, with the remaining eight teams playing for the remaining four quarterfinal positions.

Each team is allowed to have 20 skaters (forwards and defensemen) and two or three goaltenders, all of whom must be citizens of the country they represent.

go on the longest road trip in NHL History. They will play 14 games away from GM Place over 6 weeks. It will start on January 27th and end on March 13th. It will also force the Canucks to remove advertising on the ice.

Impact on the City of Vancouver: The Olympics will cost Vancouver a minimum of

$4.388 billion and will cost all Canadian citizens a minimum of $2.506 billion in taxes combined. Pollution in the city is expected to increase dramatically and Gordon Campbell said in a public speech “Citizens of British Columbia, during the Olympics I urge you to use public transit”.
