CONSOL Energy Center will host the event on April 11-13, 2013 with the event marking first NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship event held in the state of Pennsylvania. It will be the first major team sport in NCAA history to conduct its national championship in the city of Pittsburgh. Credential applications for the NCAA Regionals and the Frozen Four are now being accepted on www.ncaa.com/media

BOBBY MO BROSThe Robert Morris hockey team joined forces with the RMU men’s lacrosse team to raise money and awareness for men’s cancer during the month of November. During the month, members of both squads grew and sported moustaches as a part of “Movember” and raised nearly $15,000. Spear-heading the movement was the news that former captain Chris Kushneriuk had been diagnosed with testicular cancer. The Robert Morris hockey team will continue their fundraising efforts throughout the season in support of Kushneriuk and his cur-rent battle.

QUICK STARTSThe Colonials have registered a goal within the first five minutes of a period on 19 different occasions in 13 of the team’s 28 games. In games when the Co-lonials have scored an early goal in a period, RMU is 8-4-1.

ROAD WOESRobert Morris is just below .500 on the road since the team joined the Atlantic Hockey Association with a record of 21-24-6 as the squad plays in its third season as a member of the AHA. The Colo-nials have never had a winning record on the road, but this season RMU is currently 8-6-1 with three road contests remaining before the start of the At-lantic Hockey Association playoffs in March. The most prolific of the seven road victories this season came in the opening weekend of play as the Colo-nials shut out a nationally ranked Quinnipiac team. The Colonials also picked up their first ever win at RIT and the first win on the road against Canisius since the 2006-2007 season. Robert Morris then continued by downing a pair of future Big Ten mem-bers in Ohio State and Penn State. RMU skated in to Columbus, Ohio and took down the Ohio State Buckeyes by a score of 3-2 on Dec. 7. and then went to Penn State and defeated the Nittany Lions by a score of 3-2 as well. However, in 2013 the Colonials are 2-4-0 having split series with Army and Ameri-can International before being losing both games at Air Force.

4

NEW YEAR, NEW PROBLEMSSince Robert Morris joined the Atlantic Hockey As-sociation, the Colonials are 20-24-6 in the months of January, February, and March. This season, RMU is 6-7-0 since the new year. Out of the three months, the Colonials have played their best hock-ey in February when the team has gone 9-8-3 in the first two years of their AHA membership. Before the new year arrives, the Colonials are 31-17-6 in the first three months of the season.

SPECIAL TEAMSWins often come with good special teams play. This season, Robert Morris is 9-2-1 when recording ei-ther a power-play or short-handed goal. In three games this year the Colonials have scored a goal with both special team units. Of the seven short-handed goals, senior Adam Brace has netted three of them. Nine different players have scored the Colonials’ sixteen power-play goals this season as junior Colin South leads the way with four power-play goals. When scoring a short-handed goal, Rob-ert Morris is 5-1-0 and the team holds a record of 8-1-1 when scoring on the power play.

BOUNCING BACKDespite losing ten games this season, Robert Mor-ris has only suffered consecutive losses one time over the course of their schedule so far. The Colo-nials are 9-1-0 after suffering a defeat with the only losing streak coming after the team was swept by Air Force last weekend. RMU has outscored its op-ponents 40-20 in the game following a loss.

IN IT FOR THE LONG HAULRobert Morris will play its eighth consecutive week of hockey that began with the inaugural Three Rivers Classic at the end of December. The games against Niagara are a part of ten straight weeks that the Colonials will play at least two games. The stretch of games will take the team to the conclu-sion of the regular season and in to the Atlantic Hockey playoffs.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAINBrendan Jamison serves as captain with Tyler Hinds working as the assistant captain. Jamison becomes the first Pittsburgh-born captain in the nine-year history of the Program. Zach Hervato and Colin South were recently named assistant captains before the Colonials took on RIT. Hervato will serve as the second assistant during all road contests while South will wear the “A” during all games at home.

YOUTH OF THE NATIONThis season, 16 of the 27 student-athletes on the roster will be playing in their first or second season of NCAA hockey. The Colonials have five returning seniors on the roster after graduating ten seniors from the previous season.

KRUSHING CANCERFormer Robert Morris Colonial captain Chris Kushneriuk is often remembered as a player that would put his teammates before himself. After the conclusion of the 2011-2012 season with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL, Kushneriuk got the news that he had cancer. The native of Ottawa, Ontario is currently receiving treatment in Indianapolis, Indiana. Along with the men’s hockey team at Robert Morris, the Wheeling Nail-ers and Bakersfield Condors have also contributed fundraising efforts to Kushneriuk’s cause. At the remaining home games, the team will be selling wristbands and shirts to help RMU Krush Cancer.

NO PLACE LIKE HOMERobert Morris was 11-6-2 at home during the 2011-2012 season. Since the Colonials have joined Atlan-tic Hockey, Robert Morris is 25-13-6 on home ice. The Colonials have had only two seasons in which they have been under .500 at home, the 2004-2005 season and the 2009-2010 season. So far this sea-son, RMU has gone 5-5-1 with 3 more home games remaining before the AHA playoffs begin in March.

PACKING THE LUMBER YARDSince Robert Morris joined the Atlantic Hockey Association in the 2011-2012 season, 84 Lumber Arena has been sold out on six different occasions. An average of just under 1,000 fans have been in at-tendence for the five home games of the 2012-2013 season, including sellouts against Air Force on Oct. 27 and the record-setting crowd of 1,589 that saw the Colonials host Ohio State on Dec. 8.

SHOT SELECTIONRobert Morris is averaging 33.2 shots on goal per game. When the Colonials are held to under 30 shots per game the team has a record of 7-4-0. When getting the puck on net more than 30 times, the Colonials are 8-7-2.

LIGHTING THE LAMPThis season, the Colonials have scored four or more goals in 12 of the team’s 28 games. Most recently, the Colonials put up seven goals against Sacred Heart on Feb. 2 in a 7-4 victory. Averaging 2.89 goals per game, Robert Morris has a record of 11-1-0 when scoring four or more goals. The team’s only loss came against Bentley on Nov. 3 in a 4-5 defeat. Since the Colonials joined the AHA, the team has only lost three times when scoring four or more goals.

FIRST ON THE BOARDIt is often said that the first goal scored is the big-gest goal of the game. The Colonials have scored that first goal in ten games this season. When do-ing so, RMU has gone undefeated with a record of 12-1-1. When Robert Morris allows the opponent to score first, the team is 3-10-1.

ONE STEP AHEADThe Colonials are dangerous when playing with the lead. This season, Robert Morris is 9-1-1 when leading after the first period and 11-1-0 when lead-ing after two periods of play. Since the move to the Atlantic Hockey Association before the 2010-2011 season, RMU is 27-5-3 when holding a first period lead and 39-2-3 when holding a lead after two pe-riods. The last loss suffered by the Colonials when holding the lead after two periods came against RIT on Feb. 9, 2013.

SEEING A LOT OF RUBBERCommon thought would suggest that the more shots an opponent gets on a goaltender, the better chance of success they have. This season, Robert Morris has debunked that theory. When a Colonial goaltender has faced 40 or more shots, RMU has a record of 7-1-1. When facing less than 40 shots, Robert Morris is 8-10-1. Three of the five shutouts posted by RMU netminders this season have come while making at least 40 saves.

SCORING LINEPut back together for the first time since December 15, the top line of Wydo-Jacklin-Brace has combined for 61 points (29 goals, 32 assists) so far this season accounting for over 30 percent of the team’s point production. In games when the trio has skated on the same line, the Colonials have a record of 8-6-1. The line has come up big with the game on the line as it has combined for five power-play goals, five short-handed goals, and six game-winning goals.

50 GOALS, 100 POINTSSenior Adam Brace eclipsed the 100 point mark with a four-point effort against Sacred Heart on February 2, 2013. The forward now has his sights set or reaching 50 goals by the end of his career at Robert Morris. Currently, Brace has recorded 42 goals and is averaging a goal every three games over his career. Including playoffs, the Colonials have a minimum of 8 games remaining and at his current pace, Brace would fall just five goals shy of reaching the 50-goal plateau.

MEN OF THE CENTURYRobert Morris has three players who have com-peted in at least 100 games during their NCAA ca-reer. Both Adam Brace and Brendan Jamison have each played in 125 contests during their careers. Brace played in 33 of those game during his fresh-man season with Canisius before transferring to Robert Morris. The most recent Colonial to surpass the century mark was Zach Hervato as he played in game 100 against Niagara on Nov. 17. With a mini-mum of 8 games remaining in the season for the Colonials, two more student-athletes could join the century club. Junior forward Colin South and se-nior assistant captain Tyler Hinds have both played in 92 career contests.

LEVINE NEARING 2,000 SAVESSenior goaltender Eric Levine became the third goal-tender in school history to reach the 1,500-saves as he reached the milestone during the game against Army on January 4, 2013. Averaging 30.42 saves per game over his career, could have a shot to reach 2,000 saves by the end of the season as the senior currently has 1,886 saves. The Colonials have six regular-season games remaining and at his current pace Levine would finish with 2,068 saves. Before Levine reached 1,500 saves, the most recent goal-tender to reach the mark was Brooks Ostergard as he finished his career with 2,776 saves, the second most in program history. Levine currently ranks third on the career saves list. Christian Boucher holds the career saves record with 3,244 saves over his four-year career that started with Robert Mor-ris’ first year of hockey in 2004.

ROCK SOLIDSenior Eric Levine inhereted the starting position from 2012 graduate Brooks Ostergard and stepped into his new role quickly. Coming into the season, Levine had seen action in 37 games while playing in no more than thirteen games in a single season. In his second start of the season, Levine would record the program’s first shutout of a ranked opponent with a 48-save performance against #18 ranked Quinnipiac on Oct. 14. The 48-save effort ranked as the fourth most saves by a Colonial goaltender. Levine holds four of the top five single-save per-formances including a career and program high 58 saves. Levine posted back-to-back shutout in the inaugural Three Rivers Classic as he blanked Penn State while seeing 48 shots and #5 ranked Miami University the following evening by stopping all 51 shots he faced. Levine’s career goals against aver-age of 2.69 and his career save percentage of .926 both are program records. Levine has played in 62 career games and has a record of 25-19-9 with 1,886 saves and five shutouts.
